2 The ENDEC Pro program is used to generate legacy EAS alerts directly from a Sage ENDEC, either the legacy model 1822 or the EAS/CAP modem The ENDEC must be connected to the host PC with a serial cable. 1. Installation Note: ENDEC PRO contains an extensive HELP file. After following these basic installation instructions, review the HELP table of contents for additional information. The EAS ENDEC Model 1822 may need a ROM update. The Digital ENDEC Model 3644 does not. 1.1 Firmware for EAS ENDEC model 1822 This version of ENDEC PRO requires an ENDEC firmware ROM version 5.124, 6.1, or 6.2. If the firmware ROM in your ENDEC is less than 5.124, you will need to upgrade the ENDEC ROM to support ENDEC PRO. The 6.2 ROM can be purchased from any Sage distributor 1.2 Installing the Passkey The passkey is a small USB dongle. You must have an available USB port. You must also install a driver, check the drivers section of this page: Attaching the ENDEC to your PC You must attach your computer to the ENDEC using a serial cable. The ENDEC s serial ports are wired the same as a standard PC or laptop. Each connector is male, and has at least the following pins connected: Pin Use 2 RxD (input) 3 TxD (output) 5 Ground 9 Accessory Power. This pin provides +8v 1. Do not connect this pin to your PC. You will need a null modem cable to connect your PC to the ENDEC, that is, one that reverses pin 2 and 3. You can use any of the unused ENDEC ports with ENDEC PRO, though a 9600 baud port (Computer, COM2, COM3, or COM6) is recommended. If you use a 1200 baud port, be sure to use the ENDEC PRO settings/port menu to select 1200 baud. 1.4 Connecting Audio You must connect a cable between your PC s audio output and the ENDEC s audio input. Refer to your audio card manual or your computer manual to determine what type of audio connector you need. Audio cards usually have two outputs, "line" and "speaker". The line level may not be loud enough in some instances. Use 1 Some ENDECs provide +5v on this pin. Page 2 of 6

3 the speaker output in this case. The ground (or common) side of the computer audio will connect to any of the connections labeled "audio common" on the green bar on the back of the ENDEC. The audio side of the computer will connect to the hole labeled "Encoder Audio in" on the green bar on the back of the ENDEC. 1.5 Assigning a PRO Device ENDEC PRO uses the ENDEC PRO device on the ENDEC. Use the MENU.DEVICES.PORT.DEVICE TYPE menu on the ENDEC to select ENDEC PRO for the serial port you re using. 1.6 Installing the Software 1. Insert the CD into your CDROM drive. 2. Run setup.exe from the CDROM drive: Place CDROM in drive. Some systems will automatically start the install process. If yours does not, run setup.exe from the CDROM drive. If you are using Windows 95 or 98, click on the start button. Then click on run. Click browse and locate your CDROM drive and select setup.exe. Click on open, then click on ok. 3. Follow the on-screen instructions. 1.7 Setting the PRO PASS password Because the ENDEC can now be accessed remotely, a more sophisticated password mechanism is used. You must therefore specify a matching password on your ENDEC and on ENDEC PRO. You set the ENDEC password by using the MENU.CHANGE PRO PASS menu on the ENDEC. If you are using a hardwired connection to your ENDEC, use the ENDEC PRO settings/endec Password menu to set your password. If you are using a modem, each site has its own password, set in the DIAL window. If you are using the wrong password, the message "crc error" will appear in the lower right hand corner of the main ENDEC PRO display. NOTE: Due to FCC rules and a desire to make the ENDEC as safe as possible, there are several passwords. While you can avoid the use of many of them by setting them to empty strings, you MUST set the MENU.CHANGE PRO PASS on the ENDEC, and you must set a matching password on the ENDEC PRO settings/endec Password menu for hardwired access or on the Dial menu for modem access. Here are all of the passwords used with the ENDEC/ENDEC PRO system. Must match the ENDEC remote access password described above The ENDEC assigns a new random password for remote access each time the ENDEC MENU.CHANGE PRO PASS menu is accessed. The easiest and most secure method of setting passwords is to view the password with the MENU.CHANGE PRO PASS, copy the password, and then press the done soft key. Then enter that password into ENDEC PRO. 1.8 Running the Software See the help menu for complete information on running ENDEC PRO. Additional startup information is provided below. 2. Checking the Serial Connection Start ENDEC PRO by clicking on the Pro icon that the setup program has built for you. If you have not installed the passkey correctly, you will see this error message: passkey find error 3. Exit ENDEC PRO by clicking on the OK button, install your passkey, and start ENDEC PRO again. Otherwise, you ll see the ENDEC PRO Main Screen, shown below. Page 4 of 6

5 Figure 1. ENDEC PRO Main Screen If you receive an Error on Comm Port message, you have another program using comm port 1. Use the settings/port menu to change to another port, then exit ENDEC PRO and restart. If everything is set correctly, you should first see wait in the ENDEC: status box, then you will see RUNNING. If you see a status of OFFLINE, check for these common errors: Is your ENDEC turned on? Have you assigned the serial port that is connected to the PC using the MENU.DEVICES.PORT.DEVICE TYPE menu to ENDEC PRO? Is the serial cable connected to your PC using the comm port specified in the ENDEC PRO settings/port menu? 3. Running ENDEC Pro The setup program will have built a program group called ENDECPRO. In this group will be the PRO icon. Double click that icon to start ENDEC Pro. You now see the ENDEC Pro status window. The large box contains the text of alerts received through the Sage ENDEC. Click on the select scenario button. You now see the scenario window. Page 5 of 6

6 To select a scenario (one has been provided), click on the down arrow in the box under the heading Scenario Title as shown in Figure 2. Click on the scenario name ENDEC Pro Demo. The form will now fill in, as show in Figure 3. To send this scenario, click the large red-outlined ready button, then click send. IMPORTANT: Be sure that the ENDEC is not connected to a transmitter or is otherwise configured to put you on the air. You can modify the contents of any of the fields by clicking on Modify this time only. You can send the changes, but not save them. To save the changes, click on edit scenario. To build a new scenario from scratch, click on new scenario. To record a new audio file and insert it into the list of files to play, click on the list of names in the scenario sound box. Type in a file name to store the audio (don t use the * character), then use the tape recorder-style buttons to record, rewind, and play back your message. Click on save to save the file and insert it into the list. Note that all EAS fields are in clear English text, such as the originator codes, the event codes, and all of the location codes. Click the down arrow next to each box to see the list of choices. Click on add to add a location. You will see three boxes for state, county, and county division, click the down arrow to see the list. An EAS message can contain up to 31 location codes. There are many other options in ENDEC Pro. Use the ENDEC Pro window you saw first to change configuration settings (use the Settings menu). You can set a password that must be entered before any scenario can be changed or transmitted. You can specify that a log file be built which will contain a record of all alerts sent Figure 3. A Scenario. and received.
