4 HyperWorks 12.0 Quick Installation Guide Introduction to the Quick Installation Guide This quick install guide provides instructions for the basic installation of HyperWorks software on supported platforms. The procedures for connecting to an Altair HyperWorks Units licensing system are also including in this guide. If more detailed information is required, please reference the HyperWorks Full Install guide. For a more comprehensive installation options like console and silent mode installs, please reference the HyperWorks 12.0 Full Installation Guide. The contents of this quick guide include: Chapter 1: Preparing to Install HyperWorks Chapter 2: Installing HyperWorks Chapter 1 provides general installation procedures for required items, and suggestions for installation configuration on various platforms. Chapter 2 provides detailed installation instructions and connecting to a license server on Windows, Linux and Mac OS X supported platforms. HyperWorks 12.0 uses InstallAnywhere 2011 SP3 as its installation tool. The HyperWorks 12.0 installers are InstallAnywhere web installers. InstallAnywhere provides a consistent look and feel of the HyperWorks installation wizard across all platforms supported by Altair HyperWorks products. New in HyperWorks 12.0 is the ability to install the individual product installers separately from one another, while also giving you an option to install all of them at once via a Master installer in a batch like mode. HyperWorks 12.0 adopts a new licensing technology and is no longer based on FlexLM. This new technology further improves the HyperWorks licensing model and allows Altair to integrate the business model and promptly respond to issues. In order to run HyperWorks 12.0 applications, you need to connect the applications to the Altair License Management System Details of the installation and how to start the Altair License Manager can be found in the Altair License Management System 12.0 Installation Guide. Altair HyperWorks license management is no longer based on Flexera Software s FlexNet Publisher (formerly known as FLEXlm). It is replaced by the new Altair Licensing System. This allows for more flexibility to address customer s licensing needs and for further innovations to the HyperWorks business model. HyperWorks 12.0 licensing is based on HyperWorks Units (HWUs). HyperWorks unit licenses are server licenses. Customers can launch any application within the HyperWorks suite as long as there are sufficient HyperWorks units to grant the license check out. To invoke HyperWorks 12.0 applications, after completing the HyperWorks 12.0 installation, you need to point the applications to an activated Altair License Manager or a valid node stand-alone license by setting the proper environment variable. The HyperWorks 12.0 package does not include the license package that sets up the Altair License Manager. Download the Altair license package from Altair web site and follow the Altair License Management System 12.0 Installation and Operation Guide to install and activate the Altair License Manager properly. In some cases, Altair provides feature based licenses, which allow a particular application to run as long as the feature exists in the license file. 7 Chapter 1: Preparing to Install HyperWorks This chapter summarizes the items and procedures needed to install and successfully run HyperWorks applications on platforms supported by HyperWorks It includes a list of required items, access to the HyperWorks package, hardware and operating system considerations, and system requirements. The general procedures are: Install and activate an Altair 12.0 License Manager if one does not already exist. Install HyperWorks 12.0 on the designated machine(s). Set up an environment variable that points the HyperWorks 12.0 application to an activated and running Altair license server. Set up HyperWorks online help if needed. The software to install Altair License Manager is a separate package from the HyperWorks 12.0 application packages. Download the Altair license package from the Altair web site and follow the Altair License Management System version 12.0 Installation and Operation Guide to install and start the Altair License Manager properly. What you need: Access to the Altair Web site ( HyperWorks software USB or DVD media, Altair License Manager, delivered from Altair, or HyperWorks image packages downloaded from the Altair web site. A USB compatible input port on the machine or a DVD compatible drive. Access to an activated and running HyperWorks 12.0 license server. A compatible machine that contains the minimum hardware/software requirements to run HyperWorks applications (Chapter 1 section 2). Sufficient disk space for install: Full suite of HyperWorks 12.0 applications and Help Files needs up to 10 GB of install space and 4 GB of temp space. The temp space is removed after successful completion of an installation. The information in this chapter regarding proper media and hardware requirements will help prepare users for a successful HyperWorks installation. 8 1.1 Installation Media The HyperWorks 12.0 software package you received from Altair includes either the HyperWorks 12.0 application DVDs or a USB thumb drive, the Altair License Manager package DVD, and a documentation CD. The documentation CD contains the Altair HyperWorks 12.0 Application Installation Guide, the Altair HyperWorks 12.0 Quick Installation Guide, HyperWorks 12.0 Release Notes, and the HyperWorks 12.0 supported hardware and operating system list. The software is also available for registered customers to download from the Altair web site through the Altair Client Center ( Download the images for the platforms on which you expect to launch HyperWorks. There are seven packages required for a complete HyperWorks installation on each platform: The HyperWorks Master installer and the six sub-installers, which includes HyperWorks Desktop, HyperWorks Solvers, AcuSolve, solidthinking, HyperWorks Desktop Help and HyperWorks Solver Help. The two Help sub-installers together make up for a complete HyperWorks 12.0 Help install. Altair License Manager is not packaged in the HyperWorks product images. You need to download and install it separately before installing the HyperWorks suite. HyperWorks 12.0 Quick Installation Guide 6

9 Chapter 2: Installing HyperWorks You will need administrator permissions to install solidthinking software (Inspire and Evolve) packages. Root permission is required to install solidthinking software on Mac OS X. The other HyperWorks applications do not require administrative privileges to install. You should not mix installers of different bit types, for example - win64 installers with win32 installers in the install directory being used prior to starting the installer. All other bit type installers should be moved to a different directory than those you wish to install so that the installer will function correctly. Two procedures are necessary to enable HyperWorks. First, using the installation configuration you selected in Chapter 1 as a guide, install the HyperWorks software on your machine(s). Second, you must be able to point to an activated license server that allows HyperWorks application to draw license units. Details of installing and activating the Altair License Manager are described in the Altair License Management System 12.0 Installation and Operation Guide. There are seven packages required for a complete HyperWorks installation on each platform: The HyperWorks Master installer and the six sub-installers, which includes HyperWorks Desktop, HyperWorks Solvers, AcuSolve, solidthinking, HyperWorks Desktop Help and HyperWorks Solver Help. The two Help sub-installers together make up for a complete HyperWorks 12.0 Help install. To perform a full HyperWorks installation, make sure you have downloaded all the files from the Altair web site before you start the installation or have the USB/DVD HyperWorks media at hand. HyperWorks 12.0 can be installed via a Graphical User Interface (GUI) mode, silent mode, or console mode. The following sections describe how to install the software via these methods. The HyperWorks 12.0 Help is a browser-based HTML system. It can be installed with the applications or installed alone behaving as an online help server. Find the location of the Internet browser if a network help is to be installed along with the HyperWorks application. For Help network server installations make sure to have the Help UNC or network path prior to running the installer. You will be prompted for this information during the install. 10 2.1 Installing HyperWorks: Local Install 2.1a Installation Files The HyperWorks 12.0 software package can be downloaded from the Altair web site or from USB or DVD media. The HyperWorks installers use InstallAnywhere 2011 SP3 as its installation tool. The installers are based on InstallAnywhere web installers. InstallAnywhere provides the tools required to have an installer with a consistent look and feel with shared functionality across all HyperWorks supported platforms. New in HyperWorks 12.0 is the ability to install the individual product installers separately from one another, also referenced as sub-installers, while also giving you an option to install all of them at once via the Master installer in a batch like mode. 2.1b New Features and Implementations for HyperWorks 12.0 Installers In HyperWorks 12.0 we made some design and functional changes to the installers. The following section describes some of these new features and functions. The HyperWorks installer has been redesigned to handle each product as a standalone installer or as a bundled installer with what is called the HyperWorks Master installer. Reference Table 1.0 below for specific file names and details on the product groups per individual sub-installers. Each installer, referenced as sub-installers within this document, is a completely separate and self-contained bundled product that can be installed independently of the other installers or in combinations using the Master installer. Excluding the HyperWorks Help installers. Both the hwdesktophelp and hwsolvershelp will need to be installed together for a complete base Help install. An example of how this works on a Windows 7 64-bit machine for just installing the HyperWorks Solver products would be: Download the hwsolvers12.0_win64.exe executable. Run the hwsolvers12.0_win64.exe executable. Complete the install and run the HyperWorks Solver products. Some of the installers allow for a little further content selection distinction from the HyperWorks Solvers sub-installer by using selection trees. The below example shows the selection tree for the HyperWorks Desktop sub-installer: The HyperWorks Master installer, for Windows 7 64-bit would be hw12.0_win64.exe. This is a quick and easy setup installer, which allows for all of the different combinations of the independent sub-installers, including them all, to be installed at one time. It is done without the need to wait for all the packages to extract prior to setting up the installation, which should allow for a quick setup to install a complete HyperWorks 12.0 installation. On the Mac OS X, there are two distinct file types per installer because of limitations in InstallAnywhere implementations - a zip format and a bin format. The zip format is to be used for GUI type installs (which actually extracts via Finder archive utility to an app installer format). The bin format is used to launch command line and silent type installers. The bin format is the format used for the sub installers in a Master installer set up on the Mac OS X. 11 The Mac OS X Master installer can run under a GUI zip/app format, as long as the sub installers are bin formats. To install Manufacturing Solutions or Engineering Solutions, both the hwdesktop and hwsolvers sub-installer are required along with the master installer. Installer of the AcuSolve suite of products. Installer of the HyperWorks Desktop suite of products. (Includes most GUI applications). E.g. HyperView, HyperMesh, HyperGraph, HyperStudy, HyperMath, etc. Installer of the HyperWorks Solver suite of products. (Includes RADIOSS, OptiStruct, MotionSolve, etc.) Installer of the HyperWorks Desktop Help content. Installer of the HyperWorks Solver Help content. HyperWorks 12.0 Quick Installation Guide 9

(Includes Inspire and Evolve). Note: solidthinking 9.0 requires root permissions on Mac OS X. The images downloaded from the Altair web site can be in two different package types: one file per platform or split to multiple files that are easy to download. The split images are 250 MB per file. Run the unsplit script (available with each split image folder) to categorize these files together before the installation. To install Help along with the application, download and place the Help files sub-installers hwdesktophelp and hwsolvershelp files, which are executable files on Windows and bin file types on Mac OS X and Linux, in the same residing directory as the Master HyperWorks installer. Help files contain the Help and tutorial model files. The user has the option to select and install complete Help and tutorials or a combination of the two options. Reference Step 9 below. 2.1c Installing via Graphical User Interface (GUI) Mode This section describes how to install the HyperWorks application. Complete the following steps to extract and install the software: Login to the machine on which the software is to be installed then insert the USB/DVD, or place the downloaded files in a temporary directory. The Help Files sub-installers should also reside in the same directory as the main HyperWorks sub-installers and master installer if Help is to be installed. Below is an example of a directory with all the required sub-installers for a complete HyperWorks 12.0 installation on a Windows 64-bit platform, highlighting the master installer: IMPORTANT: Please make sure that the downloaded files have read + execute permissions before continuing with an installation. On Windows, use Windows Explorer file properties to change the permissions. On Linux/Mac OS X systems use the chmod 755 command to make these changes. 1. Start the installer by: HyperWorks 12.0 Quick Installation Guide 10

13 On Windows: a. Double click the installer executable file to start the installer If UAC (User Account Control) is enabled, then a prompt will be displayed for elevated permissions. Click Yes to contiue with installer. On Linux: a. Run the BASH sh command on the installer binary. b. HyperWorks install directories with spaces is not supported on Linux. On Mac OS X: a. Double click the zip file under Finder to extract the installer app file contents. Double click the app file, once extracted, under Finder. b. HyperWorks install directories with spaces is not supported on Mac OS X. If using the HyperWorks Master installer, remember to copy all the bin file type format sub-installers to the same residing directory as the master installer prior to running the installer. The Master installer will pick up the appropriate bin sub-installers to run. IMPORTANT: On Mac OS X, the HyperWorks Master installer does not work with the zip format sub-installers, only the bin format sub installers. 2. The multi-language selector prompt will be displayed. Select the proper locale and click OK to continue. The default locale setting is specific to the install machine regional settings. The language selection only corresponds to the installer settings not to the HyperWorks product language settings. Altair HyperWorks products are in English. 3. The Introduction panel is displayed. Click Next to continue. 4. The Executables List of sub installers picked up in the same residing directory as the Master installer will now be listed. Verify the list to make sure that the packages you wish to setup for installing are presently available and registered within the installer. 5. The Copyright panel is displayed. Click Next to continue. 6. (Windows only) The Choose Installation Type panel is displayed. Choose Local install or Server install and click Next. 7. The Choose Install Folder panel is displayed. Choose the HyperWorks install directory and click Next. Note: The installer does not allow the use of characters # and ; Note: Installing to a root drive is not permitted, for example C:\ 8. (Windows Only) The Change Shortcut Folder (Local) panel is displayed. Choose a Start Menu name for the HyperWorks install and select whether desktop shortcuts are to be created. Once options are chosen, click Next to continue. (Windows Server Installs Only) The Change Shortcut Folder (Server) panel is displayed. Choose a Start Menu directory and name for the HyperWorks install and whether desktop shortcuts are to be created. Once options are chosen, click Next to continue. 14 9. The Choose Install Set panel is displayed. Choose the products you wish to select. Products which do not have sub-installer present or picked up by the Master installer in the residing directory will be listed as (Unavailable) and not be able to be installed. NOTE: Manufacturing Solutions and Engineering Solutions require both the hwdesktop and hwsolvers sub-installers to be present. The Help Files requires both the hwdesktophelp and hwsolvershelp sub-installers to be present. 10. (Windows Server Install Types Only) The UNC (Uniform Naming Convention) mount point panel is displayed if the install folder given was not a UNC path. Input the UNC path and click Next to continue. NOTE: The user input needs to be in the form of the UNC standard \\MachineName\SharedFolder\InstallFolder to be accepted. 11. (Only if Help was not selected to be installed) The Help Configuration panel is displayed. Select one of the options: a. Connect to a network installed Help location - Input the path, either UNC or drive path, to where the Help was installed to create the product link. b. Connect to Altair website Help This will allow the products to connect to the Altair website Help. A working Internet connection is needed for this functionality. c. Set up Later Allows for a post Help install over the current installation. This option will default to the website help if an Internet connect is established. 12. The Pre-Installation Summary panel is displayed which includes the Product Features list, Install Folder and disk space requirements. Review panel information and click Install to continue. Install times are machine hardware dependent. Anti-Virus software may lengthen the install times. The HyperWorks sub-installer and Master installer may need to be allowed through any third party firewalls or virus scanning software in order to not be prompted during install time to allow them access to be installed. 13. Once the installation update completes, click Done to exit the installer. 2.1d Uninstalling the HyperWorks Products Windows 1. The HyperWorks uninstaller will only Remove All files from the install. Please note that any modified files or added files, like the altair_lic.dat file, will also be removed from within that particular install location. Backup any and all files you wish to save prior to running the uninstaller. 2. Go to either: a. The Start Menu for HyperWorks and run Tools -> Admin Tools -> Uninstall_HyperWorksMasterInstaller12.0 b. The Add/Remove panel and launch the HyperWorks uninstaller. E.g. Altair HyperWorks Master Installer Select the Removal option, for example: HyperWorks 12.0 Quick Installation Guide 12

15 Linux 1. On Linux, run the command rm Rf install_directory to uninstall the product, where install_directory is where the HyperWorks installation you would like to remove resides. Mac OS X 1. Move the Install directory into the Trash. HyperWorks 12.0 Quick Installation Guide 13

16 2.2 Connecting to the Altair License Management System 2.2a About the Altair License Management System The Altair License Management System (ALM) provides a common units-based licensing model for all Altair software related to CAE, on-demand computing, and business intelligence. This new system has been designed to enable HyperWorks Partner Products (selected third party products) to be licensed via HyperWorks Units as well. The Altair License Management System is comprised of two components: the License Server and the Usage Reporting System (URT). The license system is based on X-Formations LM-X license server. The URT is a java application that reports anonymous transactional logs to Altair. As part of the license agreement that enables partner software to be used, product usage must be reported to Altair. Version 12.0 of the ALM is based on X-Formation s LM-X license management system version b Connecting to Altair License Manager (ALS) In order for applications to use the ALS, the environment variable, ALTAIR_LICENSE_PATH, must point to the appropriate location. Multiple license paths are allowed and should be separated by a semicolon (;) on Windows and a colon (:) on Unix/Linux. The proper format for a network license location is port@hostname. If you are using a local license file, simply set the value to the full pathname of the file. A few examples of license paths: On Windows: ALTAIR_LICENSE_PATH=6200@server.foo.bar.com ALTAIR_LICENSE_PATH=6200@srv1;6200@srv2;6200@srv3 ALTAIR_LICENSE_PATH=c:\Program Files\Altair\Licensing11.0\altair_lic.dat On Linux: ALTAIR_LICENSE_PATH=6200@server.foo.bar.com ALTAIR_LICENSE_PATH=6200@srv1:6200@srv2:6200@srv3 ALTAIR_LICENSE_PATH=/usr/local/altair/licensing11.0/altair_lic.dat For High Availability License (HAL) System and/or Multiple Servers setups, list the three servers in the order: primary; secondary; tertiary.
