1. HOW TO ADD THE SPEAK TAB TO MICROSOFT WORD When you enable this function it allows you to select text you would like to have read out to you by the computer. This means you are able to access texts that are on screen independently (called text to speech). This is a reading aid. To add the SPEAK command to your Quick Access Toolbar follow this instructions below:
1 2 Select More Commands 3 Select All Commands This is the screen that will appear - Scroll down to Speak 4 Select Speak
Select Add and then OK. The icon will then appear at the top of your screen 5
Highlight the text you want to be read then press the speak icon. This functionality is available in Outlook and PowerPoint, but has to be switched on in the same way in each. It is not available in Internet Explorer. It is possible to cut and past the text you want to be read from the internet into a word document to use this functionality. Alternatively you can use Browsealoud (free download) in Internet Explorer or Browsealoud Plus for other internet browsers.
2. HOW TO SWITCH ON SPEECH RECOGNITION IN MICROSOFT When this function is enabled it allows your spoken word to be translated into text on your screen (called speech to text). This is a writing aid. Select Start or the Windows button Input speech recognition Select the Speech Recognition from Control Panel to set up Speech Recognition
You will be presented to with these menu options 1. Set up the microphone. It is not a good idea to select the first option Start Speech recognition until you have: 1. Set up the microphone. Headphones with microphone are recommended. 2. Take the Speech Tutorial. Be warned it takes a long time. It is hard for a dyslexic child to read the instructions, they will need help. 3. If you have time Train your computer to understand you. It would reap benefits. 4. It might be worth printing off the Speech reference card. 5. Now you are able to open Speech Recognition with a hope of success.
Once you select Speech Recognition this appears on the top of the screen To stop Sleeping. Say Stop Speaking Say open WordPad otherwise it opens a little window in the application. Once you have finished speaking press insert. When you have finished say Stop listening. This product has rich functionality but it is not as easy to be accurate. Typing, especially when it comes to making corrections may be a better option.
3. HOW TO USE THE THESAURUS IN WORD Right hand click on your mouse. Select Synonyms You can either select a word from the list or choose to have the Thesaurus constantly open on right hand side of screen.
4. OTHER DYSLEXIC FRIENDLY FUNCTIONALITY IN WORD PAGE COLOUR Design Page Colour DE-CLUTTER CTRL + F1 ZOOM CTRL + Wheel SPACING CTRL + 2 or 5 AUTOCORRECT Review Spelling Auto correct options

3. Switch On Speak Selection (Do not switch on Auto-text unless you have a specific need to) Also worth mentioning there is an option to make all text larger. If required switch Larger Text On (Great for tired / aging eyes.) Once these Speak settings are switched on, you can have text read aloud.
To have text read aloud. Open any application that has text, for example, an or a note. Select the text that you want to be read aloud. Press the screen on top of a word in the text. The specific word will be highlighted and a menu is displayed. The menu allows you to Select All

8. MAKING DOCUMENTS EASIER TO READ AND PRODUCE When you are producing documents (and worksheets), it is important to focus on the presentation and lay-out to ensure that information is easily accessible. The following suggestions may be helpful: Use text at pitch 12 or above Use fonts which are clear, rounded and have a space between letters, such as: Century Gothic Comic Sans Arial Verdana Tahoma Or a font which is similar to the handwriting style being taught in school. Use 1.5 or 2 line spacing Use wide margins If possible avoid using black text on a white background and light text on a dark background. You can change the background colour in using the design and selecting Page Colour. Use lower case rather that capital letter, where possible Use matt paper as it can help to reduce glare Use pastel shades of paper (cream is a good alternative to white) Use numbers or bullet points rather than continuous prose Avoid the use of background graphics with text over the top
The examples below are possible paper colours for IWB or photocopying It can be helpful for those with visual stress problems to have background colour to texts. This avoids glare or stress when reading. Some dyslexics have a problem with glare, and find it more comfortable to ready from IWB s, computer screens and worksheets etc., when the background colour is a pastel shade such as; pale blue, yellow or pale green. Students may benefit from a coloured overlay and /or reading ruler to help in school.
