SET BC Mandate SET-BC is a BC Ministry of Education Provincial Resource Program established to assist school districts in utilizing technology with students whose access to the curriculum is restricted. 4 Station 1: SET BC Resources What is Available at SET BC? PSAP ( Provincial Software Acquisition Plan To give British Columbia school districts the opportunity to join the SET-BC provincial site licenses for software titles designed to help students with special needs improve their literacy, numeracy, and communication skills Preferential prices SETconcierge ( Receive a package of suggested upcoming events, sessions, or web-based resources that meet your individual needs Classroom Technology Projects ( Provincially coordinated and different from Tier 2 CBS supported through our standard service delivery model Station 2: PC Built In Accessibility 4
5 Windows Accessibility Control Panel > Ease of Access Center Available Accessibility Features: Use the computer without a display Make the computer easier to see Use the computer without a mouse or keyboard Make the mouse easier to use Make the keyboard easier to use Use text or visual alternatives for sounds Make it easier to focus on tasks Speech to Text: Speech Recognition Speech recognition, which comes with Windows 8, enables you to move around your computer screen by using voice commands instead of the keyboard and mouse. To use Windows to dictate text and to control your computer by just saying what you see, click START in the bottom left corner, and go to All Programs. Then click Accessories > Ease of Access > Windows Speech Recognition. Follow instructions to set up Speech Recognition. As soon as it is set up you can start it by saying Start listening. You will need a headset microphone. Speech to Text Magnifier Magnifier helps you read the computer screen more easily by zooming in anywhere on the screen. Go to the START menu in the bottom left hand corner. Go to All Programs > Accessories > Ease of Access > Magnifier to turn on the Magnifier. 5
6 On Screen Keyboard Go to the START menu in the bottom left hand corner. Go to All Programs > Accessories > Ease of Access > On- Screen Keyboard to turn on the virtual keyboard. Text to Speech: Hear Written Text Read Aloud in Microsoft Office 2013* The ability of your computer to play back written text as spoken word is a text-to-speech or TTS function. Depending upon your configuration and installed TTS engines, you can hear most text that appears on your screen in Word 2013, Outlook 2013, PowerPoint 2013 and OneNote Highlight the text you want to hear and then click the Speak selected text icon. 7 Differences between Apps and Extensions Chrome Apps Chrome apps are basically websites. Apps run within Chrome s browser. Apps may not require downloads. Chrome Extensions Extensions affect something global on Chrome s browser. Extensions add extra features and functionality that you can add to Chrome s browser. Chrome can be customized with features you need, while keeping the browser free of things that you do not use. How to add Chrome Apps and Extensions On your devices: 1. Install Google Chrome. 2. Create a Google account or log in if you already have one. 3. Select icon in top right hand corner and select settings. 4. On the left hand side, choose Extensions. 5. Scroll to the bottom and select Get more extensions. Technology Tutorial on SET BC: Chrome Extensions A technology tutorial about Chrome Extensions for reading and writing support is available on SET-BC website. Go to the SET-BC website - Click Technology Tutorials under CAPACITY. Click Chrome Extensions. You will see short videos on extensions for reading and writing support and resources. Direct link: 7
8 Google Apps & Extensions for Literacy Support Text to Speech Online - Text To Speech with Google Drive - Read & Write for Google Chrome - The Premium version of Read & Write for Google Chrome is FREE for teachers. Go to to download the Premium version for free. 9 ios Accessibility Features Settings > General > Accessibility Available Accessibility Features: VoiceOver Zoom Speak Screen Siri Dictation Font Adjustments Invert Colors and Grayscale Closed Captions Assistive Touch Switch Control Predictive Text Speech to Text: Voice Dictation on ios How to Use ipad Voice Dictation 1. Tap the microphone button on the ipad's on-screen keyboard. This tells the ipad that you want to start dictating. 2. Talk. The ipad will record your voice and turn it into text when you are finished. 3. Tap Done to stop dictating. Text to Speech: Speak Selection & Speak Screen On your ipad, go to Settings > General > Accessibility > Speech. Turn on Speak Selection. A speak button will appear when you select text. Turn on Speak Screen. Swipe down with two fingers from the top of the screen to hear the content of the screen. 9
10 Zoom You can magnify the ipad screen with Zoom for visual accessibility. On your ipad, go to Settings > General > Accessibility > Zoom. Turn on Zoom. Double-tap with three fingers anywhere on the screen to enable and disable Zoom. Drag three fingers around the screen to pan around and move to another area of the screen. Notes The Notes app allows you to type notes that can be synchronized between your Apple devices. Use ipad built-in accessibility to make it text-tospeech or speech-to-text. You can insert images and draw using the built-in drawing tool. Camera & Photo Booth Take photos using the Camera app or Photo Booth app. Photos will be saved in the Photos app. 10
11 Photos & Screen Shot Photos taken using the Camera app or Photo Booth app are automatically saved in the Photos app. Photos can be edited. For taking a screen shot, press the Power button and the Home button simultaneously. The ipad screen will flash once when a screen shot is taken appropriately. Guided Access Guided Access temporarily restricts the ipad to a single app. You can disable areas of the screen that are not relevant to a task, or areas where an accidental gesture might cause a distraction. 12 About ARC BC BC Ministry of Education funded provincial response to the increasing demand for digital or alternate format alternatives to print for students with perceptual disability in BC classrooms Managed by PRCVI Provincial Resource Centre for the Visually Impaired To provide BC school districts with high quality digital and alternate format materials based on the BC K-12 curriculum 34 Providing Alternate Format Materials This is an online repository of alternate format materials of BC curricular materials (like novels and textbooks). ARC-BC collects, produces and distributes high quality digital and alternate format materials to school districts for use with students with perceptual disabilities. The alternate formats include Kurzweil 3000,.pdfs,.ppt and even audio or mp3 formats. BC educators can access ARC-BC once they have registered and been approved. It s important to note that the alternate formats, while free to download, can only be used by students who have perceptual disabilities (Canadian copyright). A perceptual disability does include a comprehension disability though so many students would benefit from using these materials. 35 Who Can Access ARC BC? Registration request to ARC-BC if you are working on behalf of a student(s) with perceptual disabilities ARC-BC is committed to working with other Canadian alternate format producers Access and use policy determined by the Canadian Copyright Law Section 32(1) 36 12
13 District Contact for ARC BC Approval Gail Gilchrist 37 Registering ARC BC 1. Go to and click on the Register Here button on the right side of the home page. Complete the Registration process. 2. This will generate an to someone in SD33 who is responsible for approving your registration (they are agreeing that you are, indeed, working with students who have perceptual disabilities). You ll then be notified that you can go ahead and log into the site and begin searching and downloading the thousands of titles they have available. 3. Free MANDATORY online training before downloading ARC-BC resources 38 What Resources are Available? Digital alternate format materials based on the BC K-12 curriculum BC Ministry of Education recommended resources A variety of formats available depending on title.txt,.rtf,.doc text files.kes for Kurzweil 3000 users only.mp3, DAISY audio files 39 13
14 Requesting a Title or New Format Go to Login required for a registered user only No print copy of the book? by school donation High school science and math texts are only produced in.kes (Kurzweil 3000) will be sent once the files are completed 40 After Use ARC-BC does not allow school districts to harvest ARC-BC and create their own repository. Only the files required by the ARC-BC students are to be downloaded. All ARC-BC files are to be deleted when no longer used 41 Station 6: iapps for Literacy 14
15 Using iapp Task Cards to Learn about iapps iapp Task Cards provide students opportunities to get familiarized with iapps. Challenge yourself and/or your students with interactive activities. Integration ideas included. Free downloadable iapp Task Cards: Popplet Lite Popplet Lite is a brainstorming tool that provides a blank canvas to capture and organize your ideas. You can add images, text and drawings to Popples. Completed mind maps can be ed or saved a picture to your ipad s photo library. Premium version: $6.99 USD ChatterPix Kids ChatterPix Kids makes any image talk! Simply take a photo of an object, draw a line to make a mouth and record your voice. Then you can share your Pix with your classmates. You can also App Smash with ChatterPix by taking anything that you created in another app and smashing it into ChatterPix. 15
16 Pic Collage Pic Collage is a picture-collaging app that can be easily integrated into any curriculum. You can combine photos, Youtube videos, fonts, stickers, and cutouts to create collages. You can also print completed collages and share on Instagram Facebook, Twitter, and imessage. Tellagami Tellagami is a tool that helps you create and share a quick animated video called a Gami. You can customize a character and background and record your voice or type a message for your character to say. Completed Gami can be shared on Facebook, Twitter or sent via text or . Skitch Skitch is a free app that allows students to draw, mark up and annotate with simple tools, and share via or save as image. You can sketch ideas, mark up and annotate photos, make diagrams, create and label maps, annotate PDFs, and share them via social, , SMS, and more. 16
17 Spell Better Spell Better is a writing tool that helps struggling writers improve spelling by offering word prediction, text-to-speech, and dyslexic spell checking. Some core features include word prediction and autocompletion, context and phonetic spell checker, textto-speech with word highlighting, and colour-coded keyboard. Completed writing can be exported as PDF, , printing, messages and more. Premium version: $34.99 USD iapps by Tapfun Inc. Tapfun Inc. has developed iapps for supporting young students (Gr. K-3) with basic literacy and numeracy skills. Website: For more information on Tapfun iapps, please go to Adobe Acrobat Reader and ARC BC Adobe Acrobat Reader is a free for viewing, annotating and signing PDFs. You can turn the ipad into a text-to-speech device by downloading ARC-BC resources to Adobe Acrobat Reader and enabling the ipad built-in accessibility called Speak Screen or VoiceOver. To enable VoiceOver: Go to Settings > General > Accessibility > VoiceOver To enable Speak Screen: Go to Settings > General > Accessibility > Speech 17
18 Accessing ARC BC Resources on the ipad Connect your ipad to your computer via USB cable. Start itunes on your computer. Click on the ipad tab on the left upper corner of the itunes window. Select the Apps tab from the menu bar on the left side. 52 Accessing ARC BC Resources on the ipad (continued ) Select the app you want to transfer files to, say Adobe Reader, in the list. Click the Add File button at the bottom of the window to browse for the file to be transferred from your computer and click Open. The files will be transferred to the app you have selected, here Adobe Acrobat Reader. 53 Before Adding ARC BC Files to the ipad Make sure to download a pdf reader on your ipad e.g. Adobe Acrobat Reader, PDF Reader, etc. before transferring any pdf files to the ipad. Make sure to download a file in pdf format from ARC-BC on your computer so that it is ready to be transferred
