6 Chapter 1: About this manual 1 About this manual With Printgroove JT Compile you can comfortably compile PDF files from a large variety of sources into complex documents and adjust the process for the documents. The compilation and the process are saved so that it is possible to reproduce them at any time. Printgroove JT Compile is configurable. You can adjust it to your needs and your device environment. This manual describes the installation, configuration and operation of Printgroove JT Compile. Terms and typography Screen quotations are printed in bold, for example configuration. References are marked with an (arrow). Text sequences, which have to be input using the keyboard, are contained in angle brackets; for example <C:\PS-Jobs\Test1.ps>. Commands which you must select in a menu are in bold and printed with a vertical dash, for example: File Open. General accentuations in the text are marked in italics. Important: Is at the beginning of a paragraph which you should read with particular attention. Note: These sections provide supplementary information and indicate special features. When commands can be performed both via menu commands and buttons, the preferred method using buttons is described in this manual. This also applies to the context menu of the mouse.

Chapter 2: Printgroove JT Compile 7 2 Printgroove JT Compile With Printgroove JT Compile you can comfortably compile PDF files from a large variety of sources into complex documents and define the finishing options. If required, you can also insert slip sheets and tab sheets into the document and print on the tabs. This way you can create complex documents, training documentation or comprehensive manuals, which are made up of many PDF files. The compilation of PDF files, tab sheets with their labels, the position of the slip sheets, the print settings for documents and deviant print settings for individual PDF files, simply everything that you have defined in your document, is saved and can be retrieved at any time. In Printgroove JT Compile your documents are saved in projects. A project can contain several documents. You can define a separate process for each document. Only when you select Print is the final print file generated from the chosen PDF files and linked with the print settings. The current PDF files are always accessed during the output. Thus the current version is always printed. For the output you can define whether you want all documents from a project printed jointly or only individual documents. Reprints can be retrieved at any time and reliably produced. The print settings do not have to be re-entered after the revision of the PDF files. Printgroove JT Compile is supplied with support for the common finishing options, output page sizes and tab sheet types. You can adjust the settings at any time to your own needs.

8 Chapter 2: Printgroove JT Compile Always up-to-date and available It is no problem if the contents of your documents change. Perform the changes in the source documents. Save the PDF files again in the same place under the same name and the entire document is already available in the up-to-date version. Distributed work If several authors are working on one document, the authors can maintain their contents independently of each other and make them available as PDF files. In Printgroove JT Compile you can compile PDF files from a large variety of sources into one document. PDF PDF PDF Reuse If your documents always have the same structure, arrange your document structures as templates. Then you only have to fill the template with the current contents. Or maintain the contents that you want to use in several documents centrally in one place and integrate them as a PDF file in the individual documents.

Chapter 2: Printgroove JT Compile 9 Customised documentation Create customised documentation. Select from a collection of PDF files only the files that you want to compile individually for a customer as new documentation. Mixed formats If your document is made up of PDF files with different paper formats, you can select whether these formats are to be retained for the output or scaled to a specified output format.

10 Chapter 3: Installing and starting the program 3 Installing and starting the program The Printgroove JT Compile program is installed similarly to other Windows programs you are familiar with. Firstly check the necessary system requirements. System requirements Operating Systems Microsoft Windows XP Pro (32-bit / Service Pack 3) Windows Vista (32-bit / Service Pack 2) Windows 7 (32- and 64-bit) Minimum Hardware 1.5 GHz processor 1 GB RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit) 200 MB hard disk space Recommended Hardware 2 GHz processor or higher 2 GB RAM (32-bit) or 4 GB RAM (64-bit) Starting the installation Note: Also read the Readme file that is supplied with the program. It contains useful and important information regarding installation and usage of the program. 1 Close all applications. 2 Log in as administrator. 3 Run the setup.exe file in the program directory of Printgroove JT Compile. If you install the program from the CD, the installation window opens automatically.

Chapter 3: Installing and starting the program 11 4 Set the language for the installation process and also the language for the program. Then follow the instructions on the screen. Also read the Licence Agreement. It contains important information on the guarantee and on the use of the program. 5 After the installation you have to activate Printgroove JT Compile. Please read the information provided on the activation form. If the program is not activated, it is made available to you as a 60-day demo version. 6 During the initial start-up of the program, you are requested to configure at least one printer for the output. You may use all printers installed on your system. Before you begin working on the products, you should have your printers configured in Printgroove JT Compile. During configuration of the products a check is performed to determine whether your printers support the desired finishing options. 7 When you have configured your printers, close the configuration window. Printgroove JT Compile starts up. Starting the program To start the program, click on Start All Programs Printgroove JT Compile Printgroove JT Compile. The program window is opened.

12 Chapter 3: Installing and starting the program Program window The program window consists of two areas. In the left area of the window you compile your PDF files and insert slip sheets and tab sheets. In the right area of the window you perform the settings. When you click on an object in the left area of the window, the corresponding settings are displayed in the right area of the window. Messages can be displayed in the bottom bar.

Chapter 3: Installing and starting the program 13 Uninstalling the program Printgroove JT Compile has a program for uninstalling which removes the files, programs and changes to the Windows system that were added during the installation process. 1 Select Start System Control from the taskbar. 2 Double click Software and/or Program and Functions. A list of programs that can be uninstalled automatically is displayed. 3 Mark Printgroove JT Compile and click Remove. The program for uninstalling starts. The program files are automatically removed. Note: Of course programs for uninstalling only remove those files that have been installed by the respective installation program. Thus data that has been produced while working with Printgroove JT Compile is not removed. In this case delete the project directory manually in Windows Explorer.

14 Chapter 4: Creating documents 4 Creating documents With Printgroove JT Compile you can comfortably compile PDF files from a large variety of sources into complex documents. If required, you can also insert slip sheets and tab sheets into the documents and print on the tabs. Your documents are saved in Printgroove JT Compile as projects. A project can contain several documents. Create a separate folder for each document. Compile the PDF files that you want to combine in one document in one folder. You can define a separate process for each document. Define the process in the Folder Settings. For all PDF files that you put into a folder, the set process is automatically adopted. If the processing of individual PDF files is to deviate from this, you can adjust the desired customised settings for the individual PDF files. During the output you can select whether to print the entire project or only individual documents (folders). Only when you initiate the Print command are the final documents generated. The up-to-date PDF files are always accessed during printing. Changes can therefore always be incorporated into the PDF files. Also the print settings do not have to be re-entered after the editing of the PDF files. This way you can create complex documents, training documentation or comprehensive manuals, which are made up of many PDF files.

Chapter 4: Creating documents 15 Creating a new project Your documents are saved in Printgroove JT Compile as projects. A project can contain several documents. The PDF files, slip sheets and tab sheets are compiled in one document. Also the settings for further processing are saved in documents. This chapter describes how you create a new project. Information on saving, opening and managing projects can be found in the chapter Managing projects (P. 39). Creating a project Select File New Project. A new project is opened with an empty folder in which you can compile your document directly, Compiling and editing PDF files (P. 19). You can save your project at any time using the commands File Save Project or File Save Project as... The project remains open after saving. You can thus save your project settings at frequent intervals.

16 Chapter 4: Creating documents If you mark a folder, the following tabs are displayed: Tab Folder Overview Folder Settings Tab Sheet Settings Description This tab shows the folder name, a description of the folder and the general information on the folder such as, for example, the number of PDF files in the folder, the total number of pages in the PDF files and the chosen print product. Set the desired process and the number of copies in this tab. In addition, select the printer for the output. Perform the settings for the tab sheets that you want included in the document in this tab. Naming folders A folder is given the name New Folder by default. You can change the folder name at any time. If your project contains several folders, the folder name provides an overview of the different documents. 1 Mark a folder in the left area of the window. 2 Open the tab Folder Overview in the right area of the window. 3 Enter a folder name under Name. The folder name is immediately displayed in the left area of the window. 4 You can insert supplementary notes or comments as a Description.

Chapter 4: Creating documents 17 Defining the process for documents Documents can be edited in different ways. For example a document could be produced as a punched loose-leaf collection or as a catalogue with perfect binding. The print settings must be defined for each process. This includes, amongst others, the output format, the desired paper and also the type of further processing such as punching or stapling. In Printgroove JT Compile the print settings for the different finishing options are summarised in print products Editing products (P. 51). Set the process for your document in the Folder Settings in the right area of the window. If your project contains several folders, specify for each folder how the respective document is to be processed. Defining print settings in the folder In Printgroove JT Compile the print settings for the different finishing options are summarised in print products. Select a print product for the folder and then check the print settings again. The process set in the folder is automatically adopted for all PDF files that you put into a folder. If necessary, refer to Changing the settings for individual PDF files (P. 25). Perform the process in the right area of the window in the tab Folder Settings.

18 Chapter 4: Creating documents 1 Mark a folder in the left area of the window. 2 Open the tab Folder Settings in the right area of the window. 3 For product selection, click on the arrow under Print Product next to the product image. Print products can be filed in categories. Select a category and the desired print product. A description of the print product is displayed next to the product image. 4 Depending on the print product selected, the print settings are adopted for the folder. Check the print settings again. Some settings may offer selection options. Adjust the settings if required or change the print product with all its settings. If an option can not be implemented by any of the selected printers, the option is marked with a warning symbol ( ). 5 Set the number of desired copies beside Copies. 6 Check the set Printer.

Chapter 4: Creating documents 19 Note: For double-sided printing, the output begins by default on a right, odd page. If a PDF file has an odd number of pages and thus ends on a right page, a blank page is automatically inserted during printing. The next PDF file begins again on a right side. You can adjust this setting if required for individual PDF files Changing the settings for individual PDF files (P. 25). Note: If you activate stapling in the folder settings, each PDF file is individually stapled. You can adjust these settings if required for the individual PDF files Changing the settings for individual PDF files (P. 25). Note: If you have set no print product for the folder (menu entry Custom Settings), all processing options available in Printgroove JT Compile are offered. You can effect the desired settings. Compiling and editing PDF files Collect all PDF files that you want to compile in one document in one folder. Also define the sequence of the PDF files in the folder. You can view each PDF file in a preview. Check the font, images and contents. You can skim through the pages in the preview and zoom in or out on the view. You can also view the PDF properties. In addition to PDF files, you can also insert slip sheets and tab sheets into a document. More information on this can be found in the chapters Inserting and editing slip sheets (P. 28), Adding and editing tab sheets (P. 31).

20 Chapter 4: Creating documents Collect all PDF files that you want to compile in one document in the left area of the window. The preview of the folder shows the first three elements deposited in the folder. You can open or close the folder using the plus/minus symbol. PDF files that you no longer require in a folder can be deleted from the folder or replaced with another file at any time. Deleting and replacing PDF files only really has an impact on the compilation in the folder. The PDF files themselves are retained. You can copy or cut PDF files and then, for example, paste them at another place, also in another folder. All settings which deviate from the folder settings are retained. These commands can also be accessed via the context menu of the mouse.

Chapter 4: Creating documents 21 Note: If the memory location or a file name of a PDF file can not be assigned, the PDF file and the memory location are marked with a warning symbol ( ). The PDF file can not be output and a preview is not possible. Check whether the respective PDF file has been deleted, renamed or moved. If you still want to use the PDF file, place it in the specified directory again or import the file again. The settings for PDF files can be effected in the right area of the window. If you mark a PDF file, the following tabs are displayed: Tab File Overview File Settings File Information Description This tab shows the file name of the PDF file, the directory where the PDF file is saved and general information such as, for example, the number of pages or the date of the last change. In this tab you can change the print settings for individual PDF files which are to deviate from the folder settings. Also the options Break Stapling and Start on odd page can be adjusted for the individual PDFs here. This tab shows the PDF properties.

Pasting files using menu command or buttons 1 Mark or open the desired folder. 2 If the new PDF files are to be pasted under a specific PDF file, mark the respective PDF file. 3 Select Insert PDF file or click on PDF File... in the symbol bar. 4 Define the desired PDF files in the following window. Confirm by clicking on Open. Pasting files using Drag&Drop 1 Mark the desired PDF files in Windows Explorer. 2 Drag the marked PDF files to the desired folder or to the location in which the PDF files are to be pasted. Changing the file name PDF files which you include in a folder are by default maintained under the original name of the PDF file. You can change the file name at any time in Printgroove JT Compile, for example renaming a long or unmanageable name with simple work names: Rename a file as JTC-Intro- V20DEF.pdf in Course Information. The name change only affects the entries in the folder. The PDF file itself remains unchanged. 1 Mark the desired PDF file in the folder. 2 Open the tab File Overview in the right area of the window. 3 Enter the new description under Name.

Chapter 4: Creating documents 23 Checking the PDF files in the preview Each PDF file can be viewed in a preview. Check the font, images and contents. If required you can adjust the print settings for individual PDF files. For example, it may be necessary that only an individual chapter is stapled in a loose-leaf collection. If a file setting deviates from the folder setting, the file setting is marked with a symbol ( ). Likewise the respective PDF file is marked in the folder. 1 Open the desired folder. 2 Mark the desired PDF file. 3 Open the tab File Settings. Note: You can reset the settings at any time on the folder settings, by clicking on Reset to Folder Default.

26 Chapter 4: Creating documents Start on odd page For double-sided printing, the output begins by default on a right, odd page. If a PDF file has an odd number of pages and thus ends on a right page, a blank page is automatically inserted during printing. The next PDF file begins again on a right side. You can change the setting for individual PDF files. If you remove the tick in front of Start on odd page, all PDF files in a folder are output consecutively during printing. This means: If during double-sided printing a PDF file ends on a right, i.e. odd, page, the next PDF file starts directly on the subsequent left page. Printer Default means that the basic setting of the printer is being used.

Chapter 4: Creating documents 33 7 If you do not require all tab sheets of a tab set, activate Eject unused tab sheets. This means: If, for example, you have selected a set of 10 tab sheets as the tab sheet type but only require 8 tab sheets in your document, you can transfer the full tab set to the input tray. Sheets 9 and 10 are printed as blank sheets. 8 As an Output tray you can select a tray in which the surplus tab sheets can be output. Printer Default means that the basic setting of the printer is being used. Moving tab sheets You can change the position of the tab sheets within a folder at any time or drag tab sheets into another folder. The label is linked with the individual tab sheets so that the moved tab sheet retains its own label. 1 Mark the desired tab sheet in the folder. 2 Simply drag the tab sheet - by pressing down on the left side of the mouse - to the desired location. Duplicating tab sheets You can duplicate tab sheets. The label is transferred. You can also mark several elements in a folder and duplicate them jointly. 1 Mark the desired tab sheet in the folder. 2 Select Edit Duplicate. The marked tab sheet is duplicated with the label.

The PDF files themselves are retained. 1 Mark the desired folder. 2 Select Edit Delete. 3 Confirm the following request with Yes in order to delete the folder. By clicking on No you cancel the process. Folder and folder contents are deleted from the project. Note: If you have deleted a folder by mistake, close the project without saving. When you reopen the project the deleted folder is available again with all settings.

Chapter 5: Printing documents 37 5 Printing documents You can print your projects at any time. Only when you select Print is the final print file generated from the PDF files of your project and linked with the specified print settings. The current PDF files are always accessed and this way your project is produced in the up-to-date version. During the output you can select whether you want to print the entire project or only individual documents (folders). Before printing a check is performed to see if all PDF files are available. Missing PDF files are marked with a warning symbol ( ). These PDF files can not be printed. Check whether the respective PDF file has been deleted, renamed or moved. For the output the printer is selected which you have assigned to your document in the print settings or automatically with the print product. Each document is processed according to the specified print settings of the folder and the individual PDF files. 1 Open a project. 2 If you only want to print individual documents, mark the corresponding folder. 3 Click on Print in the symbol bar. The print window is opened.

Each document is processed according to the specified print settings of the folder and the individual PDF files.

Chapter 6: Managing projects 39 6 Managing projects A project contains the compilation of the PDF files, slip sheets, tab sheets and the settings for further processing. Your projects are saved in the directories selected by you. The file extension for projects is.dpro. With the commands common in Windows Explorer, you can edit projects, for example rename or duplicate. Opening projects In the program window select File Open Project... Define the desired project in the following window. The project is opened in Printgroove JT Compile. You can view, edit or print the project. Note: You can also start a project in Windows Explorer by opening the project file (.dpro) with a double click. Printgroove JT Compile starts and the project opens. Saving projects When you have compiled your documents and effected all settings, save your project. The project remains open after saving. You can thus save your project settings at frequent intervals. For this select File Save Project or File Save Project as... Define the desired directory. Enter a file name. Confirm with Save. The project name is entered in the title line and in the status bar of the program window. The file extension is.dpro. 40 40 Chapter 6: Managing projects Deleting projects You can delete projects in Windows Explorer at any time. 1 Open the project directory in Windows Explorer. 2 Delete the respective project file here. Only the project file with its contents and settings are deleted. The PDF files themselves are retained. Moving projects The memory locations of the PDF files are saved in the project file (*.dpro) so that PDF files can be found at any time - also if you have moved a project to another directory. When a project is opened the memory location of the project file and the PDF files is checked. If you move a project file, the memory location of the PDF files used in this project is checked. If you move the project file together with the PDF files and the PDF files are relative to the project file, Printgroove JT Compile uses the PDF files from the new directory. If this is not the case, Printgroove JT Compile accesses the PDF files again from the original memory location. If you move a project file to a directory where PDF files are located, which have the same name as the PDF files used in the project and are created in the same directory structure, Printgroove JT Compile uses the PDF files from the new directory.
