5 Graffiti is an alphabet designed for handheld computing. What s the logic underlying Graffiti? Write inside this box Letters on the left side and numbers on the right. 5

6 Graffiti writing tips Hold the stylus normally. Start with the heavy dot. Write large with sharp corners. Write with normal speed. Write with normal pressure. Three essential strokes What s the logic underlying these strokes? Turn on your Palm TM handheld computer 6

7 Setup (Launcher: Welcome) Digitizing Hold the stylus as you would normally, then tap exactly in the center of each target. This aligns the position of your stylus to the screen s electronic touch sensors. Initial setup: Time & Date Tapping a dotted box opens a dialog box. Tap Date then Time 7

8 Practicing Graffiti (Launcher: Graffiti) Practice letters Practice capitals 8

9 Caps and Caps Lock icon Signals and visual clues! Notice Caps icon Notice Caps Lock icon Practice numbers Practice punctuation Signals and visual clues! Notice the punctuation shift icon 9

10 Write punctuation on either side. Basic punctuation starts by tapping once. Memo Pad Preview Task:Create a memo and use it to practice Graffiti. Launch the Memo Pad application Tap the Memo Pad icon in the Launcher. 10

11 Create a new memo Notice the blinking insertion point at the top-left corner of the memo. Practice writing with Graffiti. 11

12 Practice writing the alphabet Letters on the left side Capitalization Signal the computer with a upward stroke in the Graffiti area Notice the visual clue Practice writing numbers Numbers on the right 12

13 Punctuation Signal the computer with a tap in the Graffiti area Notice the visual clue of the punctuation shift icon Write punctuation on either side Basic punctuation starts by tapping once. Option: Use the on-screen keyboard Tap near abc or 123 Tap letters or numbers Tap Done when you re finished 13

14 The on-screen keyboard has three views Text Numbers International Tap here to switch between views Selecting text Drag to select letters, words or lines. Graffiti help is available whenever you can enter text Draw a line from the bottom to the top of the screen 14

16 Launch the Address Book application Or tap the Address Book icon in the Launcher. Press the Address Book button Add your name 1 Tap New 2 Enter text Tap these scroll buttons to move up and down the page Finish your entry or edit session Tap Done when you re finished 16

17 Practice Manual Beaming Task: Beam your card. Beaming Basics 1. Point to another Palm handheld within 3 feet. 2. Align the handhelds on the same geometric plane. 3. Sender: Opens record and chooses Beam Address from menu. 4. Receiver: Chooses to Accept via Yes or No buttons. Receiver: Have your handheld on 17

18 Sender: Open your own entry to record view Sender: Open the menus Sender: Choose Beam Address from the Record menu 18

19 Complete the beam Sender: Point to another Palm handheld within 3 feet and on the same plane. Receiver: Choose to Accept via Yes or No buttons. Automate Beaming Your Card Task: Create your ebusiness card. Open your own entry to record view 19

20 Open the menus Identify your ebusiness card 1 Choose Select Business Card from the Record menu 2 Tap Yes Notice this icon at the top of your business card Experience the automation magic! (Leave the address book application!) 20

21 You are ready to beam your electronic business card with one button 1. Point to another Palm handheld within 3 feet and on the same plane 2. Hold down the Address Book button for two seconds - or until you see the message Searching 3. Choose to Accept via Yes or No buttons. Categories Task: Create a new category. Creating categories 21

(Hold down the Address Book button until you see the message Searching.) 2. Before accepting place the card into a category. 23

24 Font size options 1 Select Font from the Options menu 2 Tap Font size Date Book Preview Task:Create an appointment and reschedule it during the week. Launch the Date Book application Or tap the Date Book icon in the Launcher. Press the Date Book button 24

25 The Date Book has four views Day Week Month Agenda You can switch views by tapping these on-screen buttons Day Week Month Agenda Day Week Month Agenda See before and after Scroll Up = Previous day (or week, or month) Scroll Down = Next day (or week, or month) 25

26 Make an appointment 1 Tap New 2 Select times 3 Enter text Reschedule during the week 1 Tap Week icon 2 Drag item to new day or time 1 Tap item Details gives you more control of time and date 2 then tap Details 26

27 Note Pad Preview Task: Create a note Launch the Note Pad application Tap the Note Pad icon in the Launcher. Press the Note Pad button Create a new note 27

30 Here s how to check your battery 1 Tap Launcher 2 Look at the gauge Install Desktop Software To synchronize your Palm and computer, simply push the HotSync button. 30

31 Your data is safely stored in two places Handheld Computer Date Book Address To Do Memo Other HotSync Manager Running on user s PC Conduits Personal Computer Date Book Address To Do Memo in mail client Other Test your knowledge! 1. Why do you tap in the center of the X s? 2. How long do you have when changing batteries before losing data? 3. Can you use non-alkaline batteries? 4. Where do you go to check your battery strength? 5. What are five ways to enter text? 6. How do you display the number pad? Tips Don t write on the screen with a pen or paper clip! If your batteries run out and you cannot turn on your Palm device, you have at least one week to replace your batteries. Use screen cleaners designed for handhelds rather than cleaners designed for computer monitors. If your stylus seems to be missing what you are tapping on, try redigitizing the screen. 31
