2 Activity 1 Multimedia, Photos Photos on your Palm Handheld ( 4 or 16 shades of Gray) o The PalmPilot has only 4 shades of Gray o The Palm III s, V s, and VII have 16 shades Set up for Photos Download and install a program such as ImageViewer ($) or TinyViewer (free) to View Photos Download and install a program such as ImageConverter to view (free) or create ($12) Install the programs by decompressing, use the install icon, and HotSyncing as per prior instructions for downloading In the Palm Emulator, drag in the ImageViewer.prc file and HotSync. Also load one of the pictures OR In the PalmDesktop program, run the Install Tool, load the.prc files for the program and the picture then HotSync to install. 04/12/2002 Gary Jacobs 2

4 Activity 2 Painting and Drawing Remember: Painting is BIT-Mapping, Drawing is Object-oriented or Vector Graphics Bit Mapping (Painting) is extremely limited on a computer, especially when using a printer, yes, I said using a printer! We will therefore concentrate on Object-Oriented (Drawing) or Vector Graphics. Always go first class when possible. PAINTING Programs DinkyPad was the first Painting program and works in conjunction with both Windows and Macintosh. TealPaint ($18 Shareware) is the premier software and even comes with a separate program to convert the picture to standard Windows.bmp files Locate, Install, HotSync, and run DinkeyPad Experiment! 04/12/2002 Gary Jacobs 4

5 Drawing Programs PalmDraw is a true Drawing (Vector) program. It s utility program converts saved files to Windows Metafiles (.wmf) and Enhanced Windows Metafiles (EMF). You can print directly to a printer s serial port through the HotSync. Qdraw is a full-featured Drawing (Vector) graphics program that features four drawing menus into the little Palm. You can cut, copy, paste, group, ungroup, bring to front, send to back, zoom, and have pop-up graphic creations. 04/12/2002 Gary Jacobs 5

6 Activity 3 Sounds and Music Program Training on a Guitar, Piano, or just need an ordinary tuning folk, the Palm is there, waiting for you. Some Sound programs are: PalmPiano four octave keyboard PocketSynth Simple composer s tool Fretboard guitar fingerings Metronome tap, tap, tap Tuning Fork - tune in with this tool PocketBeat Drum machine, get even with the car blasters passing by! 7 Activity 4 Data Bases Most Data Base software for the Palm is Shareware. Some programs to consider are HanDBase, Jfile, and MobileDB. CAUTION: These programs do not HotSync record by record. They HotSync the whole data base. Only FM Sync goes record by record as of this date. Keep track of the REAL program (on Palm or Desktop). HanDBase is a good program to start with Locate, Install, HotSync, and run HanDBase OR drag.prc file to POSE Emulator and HotSync Create a short database in HanDBase for your trip here to the Training Center. 04/12/2002 Gary Jacobs 7

8 Activity 5 Spreadsheet Software Spreadsheet Shareware is available from the complete such as Quicksheet to the simple such as TinySheet. How much room you have for programs and data files will probably dictate which one you prefer. There is also a READ ONLY spreadsheet called DataViz which will let you transfer files from EXCEL to the Palm. Another option for those who just wish to get-it-done is to find one of the many excellent Dedicated Software Programs which are already set up to do a particular task such as a Loan Amortization Software program Lets load TinySheet Shareware ($10) into the POSE Emulator and look at it Drag the.prc file into the Emulator and run HotSync Run TinySheet and start pushing buttons to see the features. 10 Activity 6 Dedicated Spreadsheet Software Unless an individual has a unique requirement or very individual needs they will undoubtedly use a dedicated software program. Writing a spreadsheet program to do your income tax at home is not time/cost effective. Programming a Loan Amortization program before home / car shopping is not effective either. Let s try a Loan Calculator. Load Loan Wizard Pro into your POSE or Palm Locate, Install, HotSync, and run Loan Wizard OR drag.prc file to POSE Emulator and HotSync Tap the New button to start or tap an old amount in the list. If New, type in: Title Loan Amount Amort. Length in years (use pull down) Tap Done button Remember to use details to turn on other costs LOAN CALC is another program you may wish to try! 04/12/2002 Gary Jacobs 10

11 Activity 7 There are two routes for . One route is via your Desktop Program using your PC or Mac. The other is directly from the Internet. Again, for direct, you have two choices, wired or wireless. We will start with the Desktop Program in this class session. Palm Mail software comes with the Palm Desktop software. It is ROM based and fully supported by Palm Computing. Palm Mail works with these popular programs: Microsoft Outlook, Outlook Express for both PC and Mac, Windows Messaging 4.0, Microsoft Mail 3.5, and WFW Mail Eudora for Windows or Mac or Eudora Lite Lotus cc:mail Claris (Apple) er Run Palm s Mail Setup Program. Missed it the first time around, go to your PC s START, Programs, Palm Desktop, and Mail Setup OR Run the Palm s Mail Setup Program on the Macintosh you will need to purchase Actual Software s MultiMail conduit. It is located at and the price is/was $30 On the PC, to transfer mail simply make sure that your PC IS ON. Then check your conduit settings for mail to indicate your preference (only needs to be used if you change your settings), now PUSH the HotSync button on the Palm Cradle 04/12/2002 Gary Jacobs 11

12 After the HotSync simply tap your applications button (Home) then go to either MAIN or ALL and tap the MAIL icon. Read the Mail Help Message! To send a message tap the NEW button and fill in the information as you would when you work your PC except DETAILS will give you more choices than are listed on the main screen such as: Priority BCC Signature Confirm Read Confirm Delivery To read a message tap on the messages subject once To sort messages tap on SHOW To list dates tap on SHOW To reply to the message, read the message and tap the REPLY button To delete the message, read the message and tap DELETE button Tap DONE when finished 04/12/2002 Gary Jacobs 12

14 Mail poses an interesting challenge. You have just so much memory in your Palm. Many invited and uninvited messages come into your Palm, either directly or indirectly. You can control this mail by filtering it. Tap your Mail icon Go to your MENU button on the screen At the top pick Options pull down Choose HotSync Options Pick from the following: All Send Only Filter o Check or uncheck High Priority o Ignore Messages Containing TO: FROM: SUBJ: Truncate Button to limit size Unread 04/12/2002 Gary Jacobs 14

15 Activity 8 Beaming with IR All new Palm s have an Infra Red transmitter / receiver (transceiver). This can be used to communicate with another Palm, an IR equipped desktop computer, and an IR equipped printer. This will leave you beaming from ear to ear on the wireless network. What I CAN beam to another Palm: Programs (not the ones built into your ROM) Go to Applications, Menu, APP, Beam Choose program from list Tap the BEAM button NOTE: A closed padlock means that you can t beam it. It is LOCKED by author or hardware Address Books, whole, category, one address, and your business card can be beamed from 2 20 inches apart ( this is NOT your car alarm ) Category Beaming (remember ALL is you re your whole address book Press Address Book Button or Tap it Choose desired category from top right Category pull down menu Tap Menu Button in lower left Pick RECORD pull down then Tap Beam Category One Address Beaming: Again, start your Address Book Tap the name you wish to send from list Tap the MENU button, choose RECORD Menu Tap BEAM ADDRESS 04/12/2002 Gary Jacobs 15

16 Some programs such as the Hacks require a program called BEAM BOX Both Palms exchanging Hacks need BEAM BOX to exchange programs You can beam BEAM BOX to the other Palm Now beam the Hack program On a long trip with a friend, how about playing interactive games using the IR Beam. You can download such games from Also try and at the bottom click on Palm OS. Locate IR programs (very few, but growing). This will leave you BEAMING from ear to ear.
