BehavePlus fire modeling system, version 2.0 Operation Lesson 4 Calculation Self-Study In lessons 2 and 3 you learned how to set up a worksheet and to define input values. In this lesson you will do the calculations, producing tables and graphs. A range of values can be assigned to any input variable. Some, like fuel moisture, are continuous; any value within the valid range is meaningful. Others, like fuel model, are discrete; only specific values are meaningful. For example, dead fuel moisture can have a value of 4.6, but fuel model cannot. The form of the tables and graphs depends on how many input variables are assigned ranges (none, 1, or 2), and whether those variables are continuous or discrete. Remember to always keep a list of the input with every output table or graph that you produce. Single Value for Each Input Variable Select File > New. + next to the Example Worksheets folder to expand it. Double-click SlopeMap.bpw to open the slope-map worksheet. Enter values in the worksheet as shown below: Operation Lesson 4 Calculation April 2003 Page 1 of 21

(Calculate this run) button on the toolbar. The following table is produced: Select File > Close. Multiple Values for One Continuous Input Variable Select File > New. Expand the Example Worksheets folder and select the SurfaceSimple worksheet. Type Multiple values for dead fuel moisture in the Description field. Fuel Model (Guide) button. Select fuel model 7 Southern rough. Dead Fuel Moisture (Guide) button. Type 3 in the From field, 21 in the Thru field, and 3 for a Step. Live Fuel Moisture (Guide) button. Choices button. Select 100 Mature foliage. Type 5 in the Midflame Wind Speed (upslope) field. Type 20 in the Slope Steepness field. Operation Lesson 4 Calculation April 2003 Page 2 of 21

The worksheet looks like this: (Calculate this run) button on the toolbar. The Calculate Results window opens as shown below: Operation Lesson 4 Calculation April 2003 Page 3 of 21

Click Ok to accept both table and graph output options. The status bar is displayed as the calculations are being done. When complete, the first output page is displayed. Only one output table is produced. Each of the selected output variables is given for each of the assigned values of dead fuel moisture. (Next page) button to view the first output graph. Continue to click the (Next page) to view other output graphs. Operation Lesson 4 Calculation April 2003 Page 4 of 21

Multiple Values for One Discrete Input Variable (First page) button to go back to the worksheet. Fuel Model (Guide) button. Select fuel models 1, 2, 5, and 7. Type 6 in the Dead Fuel Moisture field. Edit the Description field to read Multiple values for fuel model. (Module selection) button. SURFACE module Options button. Outputs tab. Select Rate of Spread and Flame Length. Clear all other variables. Close the Surface Module Options window. Close the Module Selection window. Select Configure > Appearance. Worksheet tab. Clear the Show notes section checkbox. Graph Size tab. Choose Long from the Graph Title field list. Close the Appearance Options window. The worksheet looks like this: Operation Lesson 4 Calculation April 2003 Page 5 of 21

(Calculate this run) button. Click Ok to accept the Calculate Results window defaults (display table and graph results). The following table is displayed: Operation Lesson 4 Calculation April 2003 Page 6 of 21

(Next page) button to view each of the output graphs. Note the change in the heading. Additional information was added because of the change in graph title from short to long. Operation Lesson 4 Calculation April 2003 Page 7 of 21

Multiple Values for Two Input Variables, One Continuous & One Discrete (First page) button to go back to the worksheet. Dead Fuel Moisture (Guide) button. Type 3 in the From field, 21 in the Thru field, and 3 for a Step. Type Multiple values for fuel model and dead fuel moisture in the Description field. The worksheet looks like this: (Calculate this run) button. Click Ok to accept the Calculate Results window defaults: Operation Lesson 4 Calculation April 2003 Page 8 of 21

It takes quite a bit longer to do the calculations with multiple fuel models. A two-way table and a graph are produced for each of the selected output variables (Rate of Spread and Flame Length). (Next page) button to view each of the output tables and graphs. Arrows on the left or right of a table page indicate that the table is continued from or to the next page. The diagram in the upper left corner indicates which page you are viewing. Operation Lesson 4 Calculation April 2003 Page 9 of 21

Note the label Fuel Model in the upper right corner of the graph. There is a curve for each fuel model. Each curve is labeled with the corresponding fuel model number (1, 2, 5, 7). Operation Lesson 4 Calculation April 2003 Page 10 of 21

(Calculate this run) button. In the Calculate Results window, change the Select the Table Row Variable from Fuel Model to Dead Fuel Moisture. Clear the Display graph results checkbox. Note that an explanation of the options is given in the Help pane. The table can be produced with either variable specified as the row variable. But the graph can only be produced in one way, with the continuous variable (dead fuel moisture) as the x-axis variable with the discrete variable (fuel model) for the line plots. The calculations take less time because graphs are not produced. A table is produced for each output variable but the row and column variables are switched. (Next page) button to view each of the output tables and graphs. Operation Lesson 4 Calculation April 2003 Page 11 of 21

Multiple Values for Two Input Variables, Both Continuous (First page) button to go back to the worksheet. Edit the Description field to read Multiple values for dead and live fuel moisture. Change the Fuel Model field to 5. Live Fuel Moisture Choices button. (Guide) button. Select all four available choices in the Live Fuel Moisture window, (50, 100, 200, and 300 %). Click Ok. The worksheet looks like this: Operation Lesson 4 Calculation April 2003 Page 12 of 21

(Calculate this run) button. In the Calculate Results window, clear the Display table results checkbox. Select the Display graph results checkbox. Both of the variables with ranges are continuous, so the graph can be done in two ways. By default, Dead Fuel Moisture is selected as the X-Axis Variable. Operation Lesson 4 Calculation April 2003 Page 13 of 21

The graph below is displayed: (First page) button to go back to the worksheet. (Calculate this run) button to calculate the run again. In the Calculate Results window, change the X-Axis Variable to Live Fuel Moisture. Now Rate of Spread and Flame Length are plotted through the range of Live Fuel Moistures (50 to 300%) for each of the Dead Fuel Moisture values. Operation Lesson 4 Calculation April 2003 Page 14 of 21

Graph Appearance Select Configure > Appearance. Click on the Graph Elements tab. Choose Red from the list for the Curve Color field. Change Curve Points to 10 (by either toggling the control or typing the value). (Calculate this run) button. The default number for Curve Points is 20. Twenty calculations are done for each curve. Changing Curve Points to 10 makes the run go faster, but the curves are not as smooth. Curve Points can be set as high as 100. Operation Lesson 4 Calculation April 2003 Page 15 of 21

Each of the elements under the tabs in the Appearance Options window are described in the Help pane. Try making changes to Graph Size, Page Tabs, and Tables. Recalculate runs and observe the results. Note that under the Application tab, you can change the border color and width on each page. To eliminate the border, enter 0 as the width. The items under the Application tab are application-wide variables and will carry over from one session to the next. If you always want the Picture or Help pane off, and if you want to change or eliminate the border, you won t have to do it each time you use BehavePlus. (We hope you ll leave the Help pane on.) Other items are reset to the default values for each session. Multiple Page Tables (First page) button to go back to the worksheet. Dead Fuel Moisture (Guide) button. Type 1 in the From field, 21 in the Thru field, and 1 for a Step. Click Ok to close the Input Guide window. You can enter as many values for each variable as you want. However, the result may be a table that won t fit on a page. The worksheet looks like this. All of the values for dead fuel moisture show in the input field. Move the cursor to the left to see the rest of the values. Operation Lesson 4 Calculation April 2003 Page 16 of 21

(Calculate this run) button. In the Calculate Results window, select the Display table results checkbox. Clear the Display graph results checkbox. The graph results would be the same. Plotting is done from the minimum to the maximum value entered. The number of calculations is determined by the number of curve points as described above. Select Live Fuel Moisture for the Table Row Variable, as shown below. The arrows at the right of the table indicate that the table is continued onto the next page. The diagram in the upper left corner indicates which page you are viewing. (Next page) button to view the next output page. Now the arrows indicate that the table is continued in both directions. Operation Lesson 4 Calculation April 2003 Page 17 of 21

(Calculate this run) button to calculate the run again. In the Calculate Results window, select Dead Fuel Moisture as the Table Row Variable, as shown below. This table fits on one page: Operation Lesson 4 Calculation April 2003 Page 18 of 21

Saving a Run & a Worksheet A Worksheet is a blank form. It is saved with File > saveas > Worksheet and loaded with File > New. A Run is a filled-in and validated worksheet. Values have been assigned to each variable. It is saved with File > saveas > Run and loaded with File > Open run. The worksheet setup and the values are saved, not the output values. When a Run is opened, the this run) button can be clicked to obtain table and graph output. (Calculate All of the Configure > Appearance settings are saved with both Worksheets and Runs. We will save the Run that we just developed. Operation Lesson 4 Calculation April 2003 Page 19 of 21

Select File > saveas > Run (or File > Save run). The SaveAs window opens. Accept the default Run Folder named MyRuns Type Surface-4 in the Run File field. Accept the default Run Description (the worksheet Description field). A window is displayed that shows the location of the saved file. To illustrate the difference between a Run and a Worksheet, we will also save the current Worksheet. Earlier in this lesson we loaded the SurfaceSimple.bpw worksheet. We have made some changes that we want to use later. Select File > saveas > Worksheet. Accept the default Worksheet Folder named MyWorksheets Type SurfaceSimple-4 in the Worksheet File field. The description doesn t make sense for a blank worksheet. Change it to read Only ROS and FL output, red curves. A window that shows the location of the saved file is displayed. Now we will load the Worksheet and the Run to observe the differences. Select File > Close, to start over. Select File > New, to load the blank worksheet. Expand the MyWorksheets folder and select the SurfaceSimple-4 file. Note that the Worksheet is formatted and ready to accept inputs. Select File > Close, to start over. Select File > Open run, to load the saved run. Expand the MyRuns folder and select the Surface-4 file. Since this is a saved Run, the input fields are already filled-in. Operation Lesson 4 Calculation April 2003 Page 20 of 21

Select File > Close, to start over. We will now load the run that was developed and saved in Lesson 3. Select File > Open run. Expand the MyRuns folder and select the Spot-3 file. (Calculate this run) button. Click Ok to accept the Calculate Results window defaults. All of the input was defined in Lesson 3. The table and graph produced are as follows.
