Fish Tank Miles Bies Grade 8 Squeak 3.2.8b5 classic Wednesday December 18, 2002 Time for completion: 30 minutes to 1 hour 2/9/03 1 of 11
Table of Content Introduction Page 2 of 11 Steps Starting Up Page 3 of 11 The Fish Tank Page 3 of 11 Adding Fish Page 5 of 11 Adding Scripts to Your Fish Page 5 of 11 Example Scripts Page 8 of 11 Conclusion Page 10 of 11 Notes Page 11 of 11 Introduction The purpose for this project was to make fish tank with different species of under water creatures and have them swim around as real fish do, with some acceptsons. When creating this project I, as well as you, will only use a few key script functions. They are color sees, move forwards, and turn by. When following the steps, I will provide in the following pages, the project should take between 30 minutes to 1 hour to complete, given there are no complications and the skill of the user. I was running squeak version 3.2.8b5 classic when creating this project. So for the best results you should use the same version. 2/9/03 2 of 11
Steps Starting Up First thing you ll want to do is start up Squeak. 1. Open Squeak, by double clicking on the Squeak icon. You can download Squeak 3.2.8b5 classic off of the Squeak web site 2. Start a new project Starting Your The Fish Tank You must first create a background for your fish to swim around in. Hint: You may want to explore Squeak a little before stating your fish tank project. After you feel comfortable with the program you can start your fish tank. Hint: Publish your work every 5 to 10 minutes. Do this by clicking the navigator button on the bottom left side of your screen, then choose publish 3. Open the painting tools by clicking on the supplies button at the bottom right hand side of your screen. Then drag the paint pallet on to the screen. Hint: In Squeak if you want to use anything i.e. scripts, paint pallet, script controller you have to drag it on to the screen. 4. Choose the paint bucket by clicking on the paint bucket icon. Then choose the color you wish to make your background, by dragging the mouse over the desired color in the color menu. For a wider choice of colors click the color menu. Click the screen with the paint bucket and the screen will be come the chosen color. 2/9/03 3 of 11
5. Continue to make a border, with your preferred tool. A border will keep you fish in the fish tank. Hint: The line stamp in the shape section of the painting tool area works the best. 6. After your background is finished, you can add more details to make so your project seems more life like and interesting. You can add any thing you wish i.e. rocks, water plants, sand, bubbles, aquarium equipment, treasure chest. 7. When you are happy with your background click the keep button in the paint tools menu. 2/9/03 4 of 11
Adding Fish After completing your background you may move on to your fish. 9. Use the paintbrush, click the paint brush icon in the painting tools menu, to paint your fish. Hint: This is the best time during this project to be creative. Make your fish as wild as you want. Hint: After finishing each fish press keep and reopen the paint tool menu so that when you script your fish they will move separately. Adding Scripts to Your Fish Adding scripts your sketches is very important. Scripts are what make your sketches come to life. Hint: After you start to add scripts to a few sketches it may get hard to control them all. So what you should do if and when this happens is open the supplies button, there will be a control panel with Stop Go and Step drag that on to the screen and it with control all of your scripts at once. 10. To add scripts to an object first hold the command button on the keyboard. Then click on it. 11. After you have click on your sketch little icons will appear around it. Click the eye icon. 2/9/03 5 of 11
12. A large menu will open on the right hand side of your screen. 13. The menu will have four small buttons at the very top, a circle in a oval, a box with writing (color), a second box with writing (black and white), and the name of your sketch. Click the black and white box and then choose add a new script 14. After you open a new script there will be a small bar with nine things on it. Click the small colored icon by the X. This will give you a new test. Hint: Never click the X unless you want to delete something. 15. Click and drag the test over the script bar. When a green box appears under the script bar let go of the test. 16. Now you re ready to make your sketches move. There will be a list of commands in the large menu. First drag color sees into your script, there will be test inside of the script. Drag the color sees into it; make sure there is a green box before you drop it. 17. Next click the first color box in the "color sees" command and pick the main color of your sketch. Then click the second color box and choose the main background color. Color sees allows your sketch to move when the color inside the first box sees the color in the second box, it will do what is in the yes section of the test. 2/9/03 6 of 11
18. Then place forward by in the Yes section of the test. Now if you click the Go button on your script controller the sketch will move. Hint: If you hold command then click on your sketch, a little green arrow will appear along with the small icons. Click the arrow and you can choose what direction is forwards. 19. Next choose a number for the sketch to go forward by. Do this by clicking the green arrows in the test or by clicking on the number then typing a number in. Hint: The higher the number the faster the sketch will move. I suggest a number between five and twelve. 19. Drag a second test over the script. Hint: Check back to step fourteen if you forget how too add a test to the script. 20. Drag over color sees click the first color box in the command and pick the main color of your sketch. Then click the second color box and choose the main boarder color. 21. Then drag and place turn by in the Yes section of the test. 22. Next choose a number for the sketch to turn by. Do this by clicking the green arrows in the test or by clicking on the number then typing a number in. Hint: The higher the number the sharper the sketch will turn. I suggest any number between five and one hundred and eighty. 23. Repeat this process to everyone of your fish or under water creatures. 24. Then hit Go on your controller, and watch your fish tank come to life. 2/9/03 7 of 11

What have you learned during your uses of Squeak? 2. What problems have you been confronted with? And how did you solve them? 3. How would you improve this project? 4. What problems, if any, where you unable to solve? 5. What problem will you try to explore in your next project? 2/9/03 10 of 11
