1. Overview SECUDRIVE Sanitizer Portable is a USB-type one-click disk erase program. This product removes all the data in the disk, preventing possible data leakage when selling or discarding used PCs. Instead of destroying physical hardware, SECUDRIVE Sanitizer Portable erases all the data for good from a software viewpoint. The erased PC will be available again once the OS is reinstalled. SECUDRIVE Sanitizer Portable can erase an infinite amount of PCs simultaneously within a single business location. 1.1 Features Erase multiple disks simultaneously It is possible to sanitize multiple disks, including the OS, at the same time. There is no limitation on amount or period of usage. Remove OS-installed disk OS-installed disks can be erased together. Selective disk erase The product allows the user to selectively erase disks such as USB flash drives or external HDDs. No need of complicated boot by CD or USB drive There is no need to reboot the system using a CD-ROM or a USB drive. Just double-click the program and the disk erase begins after the PC reboots. Provide various erase algorithm SECUDRIVE Sanitizer Portable provides four different types of world-wide verified erase algorithms to permanently erase your data. Constant Overwrite DoD M (3 times overwrite) DoD M (7 times overwrite) Gutmann Method (35 times overwrite) All disks are applicable for erase as long as they are connected to the PC The product erases both internal/external (USB, IEEE1394) hard disks, and IDE/SATA hard disk. Also, it is possible to erase unformatted hard disks and the ones where various OS are installed. The program is also capable of processing multiple disks at once, and can erase large sized disks. Auto handling of bad sector When a bad sector is detected by SECUDRIVE Sanitizer on the hard disk, it automatically 3
exempts it from the erase process; the erasing process continues for the remaining parts. Collect detailed event log Computer: PC name, IP address, OS information, PC manufacturer, User name. Hard disk: Disk model, Serial number, Disk type, Volume Erase method: Erase mechanism, Event time, Duration Import event log in CSV format Event logs saved on the USB drive can be saved as CSV file. Supports Windows PE By installing Windows PE to SECUDRIVE Sanitizer Portable, you can reboot with SECUDRIVE Sanitizer Portable USB drive and start the disk erase process. 4
2. PC Sanitization 2.1 Program Package When SECUDRIVE Sanitizer Portable gets connected to the PC, two drives will appear in the Computer browse window. These are CD-ROM and portable disk fields as shown below. Click the CD-ROM section, which has the files depicted below stored inside. SECUDRIVE Sanitizer Portable.exe: The executive Sanitizer Program. SECUDRIVE Sanitizer Viewer.exe: The viewer program that can open log history of previous sanitizations. SDSanitizerConfig.ini: This file is used for making sanitization settings. Template: Folder with sample template of the disk erase report SECUDRIVE_Sanitizer_Portable_User_Guide: User Manual for Sanitizer Portable 5
2.2 Running the Program You can run the program by clicking, SECUDRIVE Sanitizer Portable.exe. Then the license agreement will be loaded as shown below. You may proceed by clicking accept and OK. After accepting the license, you will now have to fill in the blanks and register the product as shown below. 6
Read the message carefully and fill in all the blanks and click Register. After registration, the following disk erase window is displayed. After registration, you will now have to select the deletion mechanism as shown below Section 1 shows the information of all of the hard disk drives connected to the PC. Check the box of the desired hard disk drive to perform a complete deletion of its contents. In Section 2, the user can select the specific deletion mechanism. Section 3 displays PC information. Check the box to perform a complete deletion on the desired hard disk drive. If you select the hard disk drive that contains the OS, the deletion will be performed after the PC automatically reboots. If you select a hard disk drive that does not contain the OS, the deletion of the hard disk drive will be performed without the rebooting of the PC. 7
2.3 Selecting the Deletion Mechanism There are four main types of deletion mechanisms provided. The lower it is on this list means that it reduces the chance of data recovery, but takes more time. Overwrite by constant Overwrites the entire sector with 0x0FF, 0x00, or random values. DoD M(E) 3 times overwrite Overwrites the entire sector two times by selected values and one times by random values. DoD M(E) 7 times overwrite Overwrites the entire sector 7 times, using 00, FF, 00, FF, 00, FF and assigned data sequence. Gutmann s 35 times overwrite Overwrites the entire sector 35 times, using random values (4 times), fixed values (27 times), and random values (4 times). All the Verifying options for each deletion mechanism are simply making additional checks on whether the deletion has been done appropriately. After selecting the specific deletion mechanism, expected time for the entire procedure will appear. Note that the actual expected time may vary according to the hard disk type, RPM, and etc. 8
3. Complete Sanitizing 3.1 Starting the PC Sanitization Click on Start after selecting the deletion method and the hard disk drive that needs to be sanitized. Before starting the sanitization, the program will ask you about starting the disk erase process. If you are ready, click Yes. After this screen, the operation will vary based on whether OS is installed or not on the selected disk drive for sanitization. It is divided into two operations. ; 3.2 If the hard disk drive with the OS was selected to be erased. Or 3.3 If the hard disk drive without the OS was selected to be erased. You will then have to fill out the worker name, asset number of the PC or storage device being deleted, and any other comments. 3.2 If the hard disk drive with the OS was selected to be erased To save deletion log after the erase process was finished, you should disconnect SECUDRIVE Sanitizer Portable from the PC. Remove the USB drive when you see the message below. 9
The warning message shows for disk sanitization. If you shut down your PC during the erase process, you cannot restart your PC or the sanitization process. You will have to plug the USB back in after the sanitization process has finished. If you click Yes in the window above, your computer will restart immediately and will proceed with sanitization. If you click No, disk erase will be canceled. After the reboot, instead of loading the OS, the sanitization will start as shown below. 10
You can monitor the necessary time and current progress of the sanitization. Remember that if the power gets cutoff, the PC will not be able to boot or restart its sanitization process. In that case, you should install OS again and execute the program from the beginning. After completing the erase process, the program will require you to connect the USB drive to store the log data on. Plug in the SECUDRIVE Sanitizer Portable and press Enter key. The PC will be rebooted after finishing the sanitization. But because all the data stored in the 11
hard disk, including the OS, got removed, a message will appear saying that no OS is found in the PC. The screen capture of this is shown below. You can now reinstall the OS using your OS installation CD. 12
3.3 If the hard disk drive without the OS was selected to be erased If you click Yes in the screen shown in clause 3.1 Starting the PC Sanitization, the disk deletion will start immediately afterwards. You can view the information about the deletion performed in the SECUDRIVE Sanitzer Viewer Log. Refer to clause 5. View Deletion Log 13
4. Viewing in Hex 4.1 What is View in HEX Feature? This feature shows hexadecimal value of the data saved in the hard disk. Using this feature, the user can check out whether the disk has been successfully erased. 4.2 How to Check Out Disk Erase Status To check if the deletion was carried out on a hard disk drive, first select the hard disk drive and click on View in Hex at the bottom right corner like the screen shown below. If the disk has not been erased yet, you will see that the data is saved as follows. The space that is filled with 00 is an unused area and the other one is where data is saved. Move the scroll bar and you can see the name of the file and contents in it. 14
15 SECUDRIVE Sanitizer Portable User Guide
4.3 Viewing in Hex per Erase Mode Based on erase mode, hexademical value varies as follows. Constant Overwrite: All the areas are filled with EE. DoD M (3 times): All the areas are filled with F6. 16
DoD M (7 times): All the areas are filled with 90. Gutmann Method: All the areas are filled with EF. 17
5. View Deletion Log 5.1 Viewing the Log Data Run SECUDRIVE Sanitizer Viewer.exe to automatically open the stored log data in the SECUDRIVE Sanitizer Portable USB. Click on the Browse for Folder button ( ), to select the folder or USB flash drive containing the log data. 18
The log files stored in the selected folder or the USB drive will be viewed. If you want to view more specific information about a particular log file, just simply click on the row and the result will be shown in the Log Saving Result section. Click on Export button to save all the log data files as a CSV file. 19
