What is rit for Windows? rit for Windows is a powerful note-taking application with full editing of handwritten notes, handwriting recognition, automatic smoothing and aligning of shapes and charts, smart printing, and other advanced features. rit allows importing notes from CyberPad, exporting notes and their portions to key office applications, viewing handwritten s and sending handwritten notes to via . rit for Windows provides the ideal way to process your electronic ink notes and messages, whether they are created within rit for Windows on a PC or a Tablet PC, or come from another source such as rit for Palm handhelds, rit for Pocket PC or rit Web Edition.

rit at a Glance 1. Opening files rit saves its own notes in the internal file format (.itp files). It can also import many different external file formats, including CyberPad.top files. You can open a rit note from the Notes File List or a thumbnail (when the Notes panel is open). To open.top files with your CyberPad Digital Ink Pad notes, use the File > Open command. You can also preview thumbnails of your recent CyberPad notes as original.top files if you set the default notes folder to be the removable disk where you keep CyberPad notes. Right-click on the My rit Notes button to the left, and choose Notes Folder Setup. Here you can browse to your Removable disk E: or whichever driver letter Windows assigned to your drive. This results in all the CyberPad.top files at that location being displayed as thumbnail images in the left panel Files can be easily opened by single or double-clicking on a thumbnail. Your edits to CyberPad notes and handwriting recognition results can be saved only in rit s internal format. Therefore, we recommend saving your notes as rit (.itp) files right after you open the original CyberPad notes. To do so, use File>Save As command.

2. Selecting ink Select a portion of your note by clicking the Selector button and either by encircling, clicking, or crossing strokes. To select additional portions (including non-contiguous portions) hold the Shift key. To unselect a portion of your selection, hold the Ctrl key while clicking on strokes. The selected portion appears in a "faded" color, allowing you to visually control the selection. 3. Copying/Pasting ink Press Ctrl-C or the Copy button to save the selected portion of handwritten note to the Clipboard. You can paste it to the same or a new rit note or to a Microsoft Word, Excel or Power Point document. To paste ink data from the Clipboard, Press Ctrl-V or the Paste button in the target application. In the Microsoft Office documents, you can also select "Edit > Paste Special" to choose between pasting the portion of note as a bitmap or as an editable object (enhanced metafile). 4. Converting notes to text Open the Text Pane by clicking the Toggle Text Pane button and then push the Recognize as Text button to convert your handwriting to text using ritescript handwriting recognition technology and ANR Advanced Notes Recognition technology. If no portion of your note is selected, the text of the entire note will be recognized. If a portion of the note is selected, only the selected portion will be recognized. Handwriting recognition is performed by the selected language version of ritescript engine. You may choose the desired handwriting recognition language on the Tools->Options- >Recognizer tab. When recognizing handwritten notes, rit uses EverNote's ANR (Advanced Notes Recognition) technology to ignore drawings and shapes that do not look like text and to intelligently format the recognized text, preserving line breaks, styles (such as underline), recognizing bulleted and numbered lists, etc.

Even if rit misrecognized your handwritten word, chances are, the right answer is there. You may choose alternative recognition results with a right mouse click on any word in the text pane. When you right click on a word, the pop-down menu shows recognition alternatives and the corresponding handwritten word in your original note appears selected. You can also directly edit text in the text pane. You can now copy and paste the recognized text in any document or save it as a text file using the Save To drop-down menu. Using Bold, Underline and Clear buttons, you can change the style of selected portions of the recognized text or erase the content of the Text Pane. You can also Copy, Cut and Paste selected portions of text in the Text Pane or select the whole text by right clicking on the selected text and performing the needed action. You can also recognize selected portion of the handwritten note by right clicking on it and selecting Convert to Text from the pop-up menu. This will put recognized text into the Text Pane.

5. Smoothing and aligning shapes and charts With shapes or charts selected, press the riteshape button (or right-click on the selection and choose "Recognize as shapes") to perfect shapes and charts on the spot. You can later copy and paste recognized shapes and charts into office documents as explained above. Alternatively, you can click the riteshape button at any time and draw shapes or charts that will be instantly perfected. Don't forget to click on the riteshape button again to disable shape recognition when you return to writing and freehand drawing. Shape recognition in rit not only recognizes individual shapes, but also aligns shapes (such as connecting arrows between shapes, concentric circles and rectangles, borders of rows and columns in tables, etc.), allowing to recognize complete charts. 6. Changing ink color and style You can resize, drag, and cut-copy-paste selected portions of a note within a notes or between different notes. You can also change ink color, line width, or pen styles in selected portion of a note by right-clicking on the selection and choosing Change Color, Change Width, or Change Style or by clicking on the appropriate buttons on the Toolbar.

7. Smart printing In rit , you can print notes with intelligent pagination, so line breaks follow the flow of handwritten text and do not cut off portions of text and drawings. To invoke smart printing, select "File > Print Preview" and drag the intelligent page break up or down as appropriate until the page break line flows around the text, separating adjacent lines without distortions. Pages above and below the page break appear in regular and faded ink to show the result of page separation. If you do not want to use intelligent pagination, click on the intelligent page break button to toggle it to the straight page separator. This mode could be useful, for example, to cut a big drawing into regular pages if you plan to glue the paper sheets together later.

8. ing notes. To send a message, open the Pane by clicking the Send icon on the main toolbar or by selecting View > Toolbars > Send from the Menu. Enter the To address and the Subject and press the Send button to the right of the Pane. The message will be sent via rit Service. Before sending your first message, you need to enter your registration data (name and valid address) into the respective fields of the Tools > Options > User tab. You will receive a free one month of rit service from the date of your first handwritten message. Note that desktop recipients of your handwritten messages do not need to download and install any additional software to view and respond to your handwritten messages.

rit Toolbar The left portion of the rit Toolbar includes three toggles that alter the appearance of the user interface by opening and closing rit panes. Toggle Notes Pane Displays or hides the Notes File List. Toggle Mail Items Pane Displays or hides the Mail Items List. Toggle Text Pane Displays/hides the Text Pane for handwriting recognition results. Pressing this button toggles between Text Pane and Notes File List. The next portion of the rit Toolbar includes four notes editing buttons. Undo Clicking the Undo button cancels your last action. Cut Selection First use Selector to select a portion of your note. Then use the Cut Selection tool to cut the selection and put it in the Clipboard. Copy First use Selector to select a portion of your note. Then use the Copy Selection tool to copy the selection and put it on the clipboard. Paste Clipboard Contents Once you have used the Selector and either a Cut or a Copy tool to put a selection on the clipboard, this feature inserts (pastes) the clipboard contents into a new note or the same note. The inserted content appears selected at the top of the note window and you can move the pasted content to a desired location with your mouse or other pointing device or resize it.

Next to the notes editing buttons, you will find buttons for seven rit Tools: Pencil, Pen, Whiter, Cutter, Selector, Pen Width, and Ink Color. Pencil Tool This pencil never needs sharpening! This writing tool simulates a round pencil lead. Pen Tool This writing tool simulates a "chisel point" pen. Like a real pen, the ink width depends on the direction of pen travel. The pen can add unique calligraphy or other artistic effects. Whiter Tool This tool simulates liquid paper with the background color of the work area (writing pad) and can be used to fix mistakes, make revisions to messages, or to create highlights for other text or graphics. You can write or draw over the "white out" area. Whiter automatically assumes the paper color even if you change that color on the fly. The previous "liquid paper" strokes are also "repainted" with every such change. Cutter Tool Clicking the Cutter button allows you to delete handwriting and drawings by crossing out strokes. You can also delete the bottom portion of the message by drawing the horizontal Cutter line from the left to the right margin of the message. Similarly, you can remove the top portion of the message by drawing the horizontal Cutter line right to left so that it crosses the whole work area. Selector Tool Before you can use the Cut, Copy, and Paste features in rit , you must select portion of the document you want to manipulate with. Click the Selector button and encircle, click, or drag through the portion or portions you want to select. Once you have selected a portion of your handwriting, you can drag and resize it; or, right-click on your selection to do perform one of the following functions:

Cut - Cut the selection and put it on the clipboard (see also the Cut tool) Copy - Copy the selection and put it on the clipboard (see also the Copy tool) Paste - Insert electronic ink copied to the clipboard (see also the Paste tool) Clear - Delete the selection Change Color - Change the color of ink in the selection (see also the Ink Color tool) Change Width - Change the width of ink in the selection (see also the Pen Width tool) Change Style - Change the style ink in the selection (see also the Pencil and the Pen tools) Recognize as Shapes - Applies shape recognition to selected shapes (riteshape tool). Provides intelligent adjustment, alignment, resizing, correction of cell borders in a freehand table, connection of arrows and adjacent shapes, and fine-tuning of concentric shapes, as illustrated below: Recognize as Text - Open the Text Pane and convert the selected portion of your note into text Pen Width To change your ink width, click the button with the desired pen thickness. Ink Color To change ink color, click the palette button and choose your desired color. Note that you cannot select colors when the Whiter tool is in use: it always uses the current background color. riteshape Tool Need a perfect circle, square, triangle or other basic shape, or to perfect a complete and align the complete freehand chart? Toggle the riteshape feature on and off by clicking the riteshape button:

When riteshape is enabled, rit watches as you draw and automatically smoothes, adjusts and aligns shapes. This feature is great for natural and intuitive charting and drawing. Or, you may first draw a shape or a complete chart with the riteshape feature disabled, and them select the chart and press the riteshape button to perfect the drawing. You may want to disable this feature when using handwriting to avoid possible confusion. See Convert To Shapes feature for details. Notes File List Notes File List Pop-up Menu Right click on the Notes bar to open the Notes Pop-up Menu. Use Notes Folder Setup to change default Notes Folder. Use Field Chooser to alter the display of Notes File list by adding and deleting fields (drag unnecessary fields to the Field Chooser window to hide them; drag fields that you want to add to the display from the Field Chooser window to the pane). Browse for Notes Folder Allows you to select the file system folder from which to retrieve all rit notes stored in that folder. Sort by File Info Sort by file name, date modified, or file size. Notes File List and Thumbnail View Displays the detail list or thumbnail views of rit notes files stored in the current folder. To select viewing of thumbnails or details choose the view option from the option picker. (To hide and unhide this view, use Toggle Notes List button.) s Items List and Thumbnail View Displays the detail list or thumbnail views of rit items present in the selected Outlook folder. To select viewing of thumbnails or details choose the view option from the option picker. To select folders, press the button on the right side of the pane.

(To hide and unhide this view, use Toggle Mail Items List button.) Text Pane Text Pane holds recognized text (see Recognize button) or text manually transcribed by the user. If the text in this window was obtained as a result of handwriting recognition, it can be corrected by direct editing or by selecting from a list of alternative recognition results: Recognize as Text Tool This button launches handwriting recognition of the entire note (or a selected portion of the note) and places the result in the Text Pane for correction and reuse. rit attempts to ignore drawings and other portions of the note or a selection that is not handwritten text. For best recognition results see Hints for Best Recognition. Save Text to Clipboard and Save Text Select the needed option from the pull-down "Save To" menu. "Save Text To Clipboard" automatically selects all text in the Text Pane and copies it to the Clipboard to be pasted into another document for reuse. "Save Text To File" allows you to save recognition results as a regular text file, Unicode text file or Rich Text file. Text Styles Use Bold and Underline buttons to alter the style of text in the Text Pane

Pane To Address In the To field, enter addresses of the recipients of your handwritten message. Separate multiple addresses by semicolons or commas. Subject Let your recipient know what your message is about by entering the desired subject in the Subject field. Send Button When sending a new or response message, first-time users will be directed to the registration page. After registering, you will be able to send your rit message and will receive access to rit service for your future correspondence. Message Separator Separator line allows you to open or close additional space inside ink document. You can insert the separator anywhere inside the document by right-clicking the place where you need to open the space and choose 'Split' from the pop-up menu. After the separator is inserted, it will automatically scroll down when you draw or write above it, shifting down the bottom part of the document and allowing you more space for inserting new ink above it. Also, you can drag the separator up or down to open more space or remove the unwanted horizontal space inside your document. Once finished, remove the separator by right-clicking it and choosing 'Hide' from the pop-up menu. Scrolling Tool You can scroll through rit messages by using the scroll bar on the right side of the pane. The scroll function and message separator combine to make rit messages function like infinitely long paper scrolls.

Hints for Best Recognition What can be recognized Cursive and hand-printed text, organized as simple notes, numbered and unordered lists, underlined words, headers. Words written with thicker pen than the rest of the text will be recognized in bold. Diagrams embedded in the text will be skipped by the ANR recognition engine. Limitations The ritescript and ANR engines are used for accurate, user-independent recognition of text in printed, cursive and mixed styles and selected languages. For best recognition results, please take into account basic limitations of the handwriting recognition engine (the "recognizer"). 1. The recognizer has to decide which words or lines of text belong together. If words are written together too tightly or at an angle/orientation that the recognizer doesn't expect, results may not be accurate. 2. The recognizer used in rit is looking for general words in the selected language using a large vocabulary. It will attempt recognizing any word, but you should not expect particularly accurate recognition for special terms (such as drugs or company names), unless you write them neatly, typically in separate letters (hand-printed). 3. It is difficult to distinguish between some types of drawings and handwriting (example: a circle and the letter "O"). 4. It is difficult to distinguish correction marks, overwriting or scribbling out words. 5. It is sometimes difficult to distinguish between visually similar symbols without the context (example: a printed "t" make look exactly like a "+"). General Text Recognition Tips 1. Don't write words upside-down, at a steep angle from horizontal or sideways. 2. Leave enough space between words and lines. 3. Avoid writing long strings of punctuation or special characters. 4. Don't write too small. 5. Don't overwrite or correct words or add portions of a word after your wrote subsequent words. 6. Take special care to write neatly when writing proper names, abbreviations, special terms and numbers. Consider printing when writing such words. 7. To recognize a complex overlapped mix of text and drawings, consider using subsequent selections of portions of the text, recognizing each selection separately. 8. Don't expect your signature to be recognized.

Tips for Organizing Notes for Best Recognition 1. Consider organizing notes into a single column rather than multiple columns or groups on a page. 2. If you want to recognize notes that are organized into multiple columns on a page, select each column separately and recognize them independently. 3. Separate text and drawings vertically, or select handwritten text independently before recognizing. 4. If the recognizer does not correctly group words or lines of text together, you may choose to manually select groups of handwritten words and recognize them independently.
