MIDAS Product Suite Version: QUICK Overview Overview: This guide here is designed as a small reference which can be put next to the computer keyboard when you are new to MIDAS. The following 12 pages will give an overview of the main MIDAS menus and basic functions of MIDAS Configurator. Moreover, some MIDAS Add-Ons will also be shown (MIDAS Inventory, MIDAS Debugger). Copyright blue elephant systems GmbH, MIDAS 4.4.x Quick Overview, 01/15/2011 doc version 1.2 1
1. Login - Access to the MIDAS GUI 1st step: Open your browser and enter the address where the MIDAS Web Application system (WebApp) is installed (Figure 1). For HTTP the default port is 9662; for HTTPS it is for HTTP use: for HTTPS use: 2nd step: Enter the login name and password then press Login. The initial access credentials which can be used are: Login name: admin Password: secret Figure 1 Login Screen 2. BackEnd Selection In order to work on a HP OM server, you need to select it inside the MIDAS GUI. 1st step: Either directly select a HP OM server or use List all. Here you get an overview of all available systems and their status (online, offline, maintenance mode). 2nd step: A HP OMU icon will appear (Figure 2). Select it and you will be shown the HP OM index page. From there you can access all HP OM configuration objects, to do so use the Administrative Menu (Figure 3). Figure 2 Backend Selection Figure 3 NOTE 1: On the top right hand side you see the username with which you are logged in; the HP OM server you are connected to and the current HP OM version is also displayed. The comment function can be used to enter a general text which will be added automatically to all operations (add, delete, modify) in the MIDAS audit tracking system. NOTE 2: The icon Admin is for the MIDAS administrative part (user mgmt., search index etc.). The Server icon gives you access to the MIDAS BackEnd server part (jobs, tasks, download folder etc.). NOTE 3: Via the small Help button context sensitive help information can be displayed. 2 Copyright blue elephant systems GmbH, MIDAS 4.4.x Quick Overview, 01/15/2011 doc version 1.2
3. Menu Names & Functions: Toolbar = switch between HP OM and the different MIDAS components. Administrative = access the main HP OM or MIDAS configuration items (content depends on the selected Toolbar icon). Browse = context based read only operations. Action = context based actions which can be performed on an item (Edit,Create,Modify,Delete, Generate Documentation, VCS Checkin, etc.). List = can be used for mass operations (Delete/VCS checkin/deployment etc.). See Figure 4. Figure 4 Menus & Functions 4. Browse Menu & Action Menu: Figure 5 Browse Menu These are basically the most important menus. They exist as a context menu for each HP OM configuration object and on a global level (see Figure 4). Context Browse Menu = read only operations (Figure 5): Here you can list/access the context related information for the selected HP OM configuration item. The content depends on the installed MIDAS version and the selected HP OM object. Figure 5, for example, shows the Browse Menu for a HP OM node: The Browse Menu functions gives you more transparency, e.g. by these operations Node Groups (lists all Node Groups containing the Node), Effective Policy Assignments (lists all Policies and Policy Groups which will be deployed to the node, when a distribution job starts), list Deployed Policies on a Node, with the option to enable/disable single Policies, Message Catalog, Resource Catalog, Notification Catalog, etc. will list the corresponding messages, notifications or the instruction text, Versions in VCS (version control = VCS). From here e.g. a rollback can be performed to a previous version. Copyright blue elephant systems GmbH, MIDAS 4.4.x Quick Overview, 01/15/2011 doc version 1.2 3
Context Action Menu = It lists all actions which can be performed on an item (Edit, Generate Documentation, VCS Checkin, Delete, Download, Enable Node, etc.). The content depends on the installed MIDAS version and the selected HP OM object). This example shows the Action Menu for a node (Figure 6): The Action Menu e.g. lets you do these operations: Edit, Copy with Assignments, Assign and Edit Assignments, Create Outage Compare Policies Generate Documentation, Enable/Disable Node/ All Polices, Checkin (into VCS). Figure 6 Browse Menu 5. Filters & Listings: Figure 7 shows the different possibilities to filter and display the data in different ways. The custom filter function can be very helpful to quickly locate the item you are looking for within one HP OM object section, e.g. Policy Bank, Policy Groups, etc. Figure 7 Filters & Listings 4 Copyright blue elephant systems GmbH, MIDAS 4.4.x Quick Overview, 01/15/2011 doc version 1.2
6. Working with Policy Bank, Policies, Policy Groups: When doing a drill down inside the Policy Bank, Policy Group or also when doing a view on a single Policy, MIDAS will list the hierarchy of that item as shown in the following two examples: Figure 8 If the Policy is part of several Policy Groups, this information will also be displayed. The links can help you to directly jump to a particular Policy Group. If no path is listed then this Policy isn't part of any Policy Group. When selecting x more you can display all policy groups the policy is in. Figure 9 7. Compare: Figure 10 The compare function is helpful to quickly identify differences between Policies or Policy Groups: What can be compared? You can compare one Policy/ Policy Group with another (it can be located also on a different HP OM server). You can compare a Policy with an older version of itself inside VCS. Compare the effective Policies and Policy Groups on a Node against the HP OM server (desired state); MIDAS Administrator only. Color Codes: Changes are shown in yellow. Deletions are marked red, additions are green. HOW TO run a Compare: Figure 11 The compare feature can be accessed via the Action Menu for a Policy, Policy Group, and within VCS. Via the pop-up selector (Figure 11), you can define the BackEnd. Filter or different Policy listings allow you to find the HP OM item. By selecting the + symbol in front of a Policy/Policy Group you can run a comparison against a version inside VCS of that Policy. Copyright blue elephant systems GmbH, MIDAS 4.4.x Quick Overview, 01/15/2011 doc version 1.2 5
8. Desired State (MIDAS Administrator only): Different desired state queries are possible. When using packages, those can be verified against the HP OM server or against a node. Figure 12 Policy Comparison Thirdly, one can run via the Action Menu for each node: Compare effective to deployed Policies. This will compare the assigned with the effectively distributed policies and policy groups. Results window (Figure 12): Red Policy is assigned but not deployed Green Policy is deployed but not assigned Yellow Policy contents is different. Via the icon Compare to... you can run the compare function. Tip: To run Compare to.. right mouse click the icon and use open link in new tab/window so you don't loose the main comparison window. Figure 13 Compare Effective to Deployed Policies Result 9. Documentation Generation: Documentation can be generated for almost any HP OM item listed in MIDAS (Nodes, Policies, Policy Groups, etc.). To generate documentation, use the Action Menu Generate Documentation. MIDAS offers several out-of-the-box standard reports with varying details. The available output formats are: HTML, PDF, WORD and Excel (Figure 14). To generate the report, simply click on the icon. Figure 14 Documentation Generation 6 Copyright blue elephant systems GmbH, MIDAS 4.4.x Quick Overview, 01/15/2011 doc version 1.2
10. VCS: Almost any HP OM or MIDAS object can be checked into VCS. Individual items can be checked in by using the Action Menu -> Checkin, which creates a new version of that item in VCS. Multiple items can be checked into VCS via the so called List Menu (dropdown menu) at the bottom of each screen. To view the existing checked in versions of an item in VCS, select from the Browse Menu -> List Versions. Tip: Via the global Policy Action Menu you can run Checkin all Policies. Side-Note: The MIDAS VCS repository is located on the MIDAS Web Application server. ROLLBACK: Restoring an older version from VCS. 1st step: In order to do a rollback, first list all available versions of that HP OM item in VCS. 2nd step: To check out a particular version, select from the Action Menu -> Checkout to : Figure 15 VCS Checkout 3rd step: Specify the HP OM BackEnd and other options for the HP OM upload (Figure 16). Figure 16 Tip: If you deleted an HP OM object but which was checked into VCS before, you can still restore it. Simply physically browse through the VCS repository in order to restore it. From the Administrative Menu select Browse -> Version Control Repository. NOTE: There is no default auto checkin in MIDAS. After editing you have to manually checkin the HP OM item. There is also a schedulable task available to run a global HP OM VCS checkin for the HP OM objects and/or HP OM files. HP OM 9 offers auto checkin via HP OM s own version control system. 8 11. Managed Node Instrumentation: It is possible to Browse, Edit or even Add Files inside your /var/opt/ov/share/databases/opc/mgd_node/ folder which includes the so called customer and vendor tree. While being connected to an HP OM BackEnd use the Administrative Menu: Browse -> Managed Node Instrumentation to access it, see Figure 17. Other folders can also be added. Contact Product Support if you plan to do this. Figure File Transfers / Downloads / Archiving: With the FTP or SCP module you can download e.g. a Policy on server A and transfer it to server B. 1st step: Download the HP OM object To do so select from the Action Menu Download. To download multiple items at once, use the check box and select Download from the List Menu. You can enter a comment (will be added to the filename) and define DSF only or to do a Complete Download. NOTE: The download will be physically saved on the MIDAS HP OM BackEnd you are connected to, inside the folder: <MIDAS_HOME>/data/clipboard File transfers are done to and from the clipboard of each BackEnd (including the WebApp as well). 2nd step: Transfer To access the clipboard you have two choices: Via the HP OM/U icon use the Administrative Menu -> Browse -> Downloads or select the MIDAS Server icon -> Administrative Menu -> Browse -> Downloads 8 Copyright blue elephant systems GmbH, MIDAS 4.4.x Quick Overview, 01/15/2011 doc version 1.2
3rd step: From the Action Menu select Push or Pull Transfer (Figure 18). A Push will push the file from the BackEnd to the WebApp or other BackEnds. A Pull will inform the destination system to fetch the file from the source BackEnd via a pull operation. This means that there are two transfer directions available. This might be helpful if a firewall exists, which only allows transfers in one direction. Figure 18 4th step: After selecting Push or Pull you have to select the destination MIDAS BackEnd and the Transfer option. Recommended is FTP or SSH with key. In both cases no password is necessary. SSH with key requires that the MIDAS SSH keys were exchanged before. Figure 19 5th step: Now select the destination BackEnd in MIDAS from the Administrative Menu under Servers. When connected to that BackEnd goto the Clipboard directory there. To do so select: HP OM/U icon -> Administrative Menu -> Browse -> Downloads, or MIDAS Server icon -> Administrative Menu -> Browse -> Downloads Here you will find the transferred data. From the Action Menu you can select Upload to upload the data into HP OM (Figure 18). Copyright blue elephant systems GmbH, MIDAS 4.4.x Quick Overview, 01/15/2011 doc version 1.2 9
13. Search: Two functions exist: Locate and Search. Within the OM/U icon select Find : Locate allows you to search for a label or name. This function is used behind the custom Filter in each HP OM/U object section. The full-text Search is more powerful. You can limit the search for an HP OM object class and/or MIDAS HP OM BackEnd. With +term1 or -term2 you can include or exclude all documents which also contain the string. Tip: use <searchterm> to search for exactly that string. Example: "<$2> fell below threshold <$5>; value = <$4>. (sample type = <$3>; alarm index = <$1>)" 14. Troubleshooting Tips: a) If MIDAS is not running correctly or you notice any problems (login problems, some modules not working correctly) this command proved to be useful: # /opt/midas44/midas.sh restart -clean (SUN/HPUX/SUNOS) # C:\midas42\midas.bat restart -clean (WINDOWS) b) Moreover, there is the analyze command. It will check the status of the license files and the logs for known errors. For known problems a tip will be given how to solve the problem. # /opt/midas44/midas.sh analyze (SUN/HPUX/SUNOS) # C:\midas42\midas.bat analyze (WINDOWS) c) If there is still no solution to your problem, please run the support command. It will collect all log and configuration files and put them into one zip file. Please forward this to: support@blue-elephant-systems.com # /opt/midas44/midas.sh support (SUN/HPUX/SUNOS) # C:\midas43\midas.bat support (WINDOWS) 15. Resetting the MIDAS admin Password on the WebApp If the password for the user admin on the WebApp was forgotten simply run the following command to reset it to secret": # /opt/midas44/midas.sh ant -f conf/ant/admin.xml reset_admin_password 16. Starting MIDAS Debugger When editing a policy, MIDAS Debugger can be started from within the tab Conditions, see Figure 20. Next select the test agent from the top drop down menu. Figure 20 For all details it is recommended to consult the MIDAS Debugger manual. 10 Copyright blue elephant systems GmbH, MIDAS 4.4.x Quick Overview, 01/15/2011 doc version 1.2
17. MIDAS Inventory To access the Windows based MIDAS Inventory through the MIDAS GUI, select the Iventory server from the Administrative Menu under Servers. Next select from the Toolbar Menu the Server icon -> All Discovered Devices. To run a comparison between the results from the discovery and your HP OM server you can for example go through the Administrative Menu Servers -> List All. From the Browse Menu of your HP OM server select Node Comparison Report, see Figure 21. After that you will be asked to select the MIDAS Inventory server. Depending on the size of your environment the comparison report might run up to 1-4 minutes. Figure MIDAS Backup/Restore Points In each editor window there is a button labbeled BACKUP. It can be used to restore points. The HP OM API does not support partial saves to the HP OM Oracle database. Whenever, you press SAVE a restore point is created on the WebApp system, which is deleted after the save was successful also in HP OM. If this should fail, your work won t be lost. Creating restore points manually is also possible. For the workflow see Figure 22: Figure 22 Edit Backup (create restore point) Close Crash Timeout... re-open object via Edit Lock Warning Restore Select previous backup session Save 19.
