Since the wall outlet supplies constant power, there s no battery to charge. Use a new or freshly-formatted microsd card with a capacity up to 128GB. Orient its gold connectors so they re pointed down when you insert the card into the slot hidden under the removable cover. Because wall outlets are typically located near the floor, the lens has been installed pointing upward by 15 degrees. Even so, to capture the faces of adults, the camera should be at least 8-feet away from subjects. 3 2 using the hidden camera 2 using the hidden camera DIAGRAM START AND TEST RECORDING With its memory card inserted and card cover snapped back into place, plug the camera into an active power outlet. You ll hear a single beep, indicating the camera powered on and automatically entered motion-detection mode. It will start recording video when the lens detects motion. Walk in front of the camera to ensure recording is triggered and let the camera record for a few minutes. Then press the D button on the remote to stop motion-detection recording. You ll hear a double beep. Remove the card and plug it into a computer using an adapter (not included) to verify that a video has been recorded. (The first time you use the camera the date and time won t be necessarily correct until you follow the procedure below.) Note: older IPS-20 models will not beep when you plug them into a power outlet. These particular units require you to press the A (power-on) button, which is accompanied by a single beep, to put the camera into motion-detection mode. Most users find that the IPS-20 meets their needs in motion-detection mode since all they must do is plug in, listen for the beep and walk away. Later, they can simply press the D button and listen for the double beep before pulling the camera from the outlet and transferring the card to their computer. MOTION VS. MANUAL VIDEO RECORDING Motion recording is the default when you plug in the camera or power it back on. When triggered by motion, the camera will record video for 3 minutes. It will save the file and return to motion-detection standby mode until triggered again. If you decide to switch to manual recording, close the motion recording that s possibly in progress by pressing the D-button. A double beep indicates recording has stopped. Then press the C-button to start a manual recording. You ll hear a single beep. Manual recording will continue indefinitely until you press the C-button again. A double beep indicates recording has stopped. Remember: a single beep starts the camera to record, but a double beep stops recording. page 4 page 5

4 2 using the hidden camera 2 using the hidden camera TAKING PHOTOGRAPHS As long as the camera is powered on, you can press the B-button at any time to snap and save a photo. You ll hear a single beep to indicate you ve taken a photo. (If video recording is simultaneously going on, you ll hear the photo-taking beep during playback.) No matter what video resolution you set, photos are always captured at 2560 x 1920 pixels. DATE AND TIME SETTINGS Create a.txt file on your computer and save it in the root directory of the camera s memory card when the card is attached as an external drive. (Use your own USB card adapter or microsd sleeve adapter.) On the top line of the file enter the date and time in the following format: year-month-day hour:minute:second Y1. For example: :23:00 Y1 The Y instructs the camera to overlay the date and time in a corner of the video or photo, so the information will be visible during playback. If you prefer not to overlay the date and time (which will still show up in the file directory), substitute N for Y. The number adjoining the Y instructs the camera to record at a particular resolution and frame rate. AUDIO CUES The built-in speaker is deployed exclusively to provide audio feedback as you use the keychain remote to operate the camera. There are no LED indicators on the IPS-20. So, it s important to listen as you press. It s not recommended to wear earphones at the same time since you could lose track of the camera s status. If you hear a single beep upon plugging in, do not press a button to power on. ABOUT LOOP RECORDING VIDEO SETTINGS Y1 instructs the camera to record at Full HD (1080p) at 30 frames per second (fps). Y2 tells the camera to record at 720p, 30 fps. Y3 tells the camera to record at 720p, 60 fps. The camera is set up for loop recording. When the memory card s capacity is reached, the oldest file is automatically deleted to accommodate the newest recording. Files are deleted sequentially. Be mindful of files you want to archive, share or . Set aside the card or transfer critical files to your computer. If you re aware of incidents in which recordings were made, it s up to you to preserve the evidence in a timely manner. Loop recording cannot be disabled. page 6 page 7

5 2 using the hidden camera 3 support PLAYING FILES After powering off or stopping recording (either command is confirmed by a double beep), remove the memory card and place it in a microsd card adapter (if your computer has a dedicated SD-card slot) or into a USBcard adapter (that plugs into a USB port). The card will appear on your computer as a removable drive. Double click on the DCIM directory to play files using such programs as the VLC Media Player or Windows Media Player. Use the file directory on your computer to transfer or delete videos and photographs. Media types will be identified with the following prefixes: MOT means a motion-triggered video, REC, a manually-triggered video and PIC, a photo. Video files are saved automatically every three minutes. If there s no motion detected at that time, recording will stop until there s another motion trigger. If motion continues or you ve set the camera to manually record, a new but contiguous video file will be started. TROUBLESHOOTING Issue: The camera seems to have locked up and isn t reacting to any button presses from the remote. Fix: This may occur when the camera receives too many commands at once. To reset the camera, insert the included reset tool (or an unfurled paper clip) in the reset hole. Hold it in place for 2- to 3 seconds. Issue: When playing back video, I can hear audio but have no video. Fix: If your computer s included Windows Media Player is having trouble with your files, try using the VLC player. It can be downloaded for free at: Issue: My video playback is choppy or stuttering. Fix: Try first copying the files to your computer s internal drive rather than playing them directly from the removable disk drive that first shows up when you attach the camera s memory card to your computer. Going forward, you may try using a new memory card or reformatting the old memory card. CHANGING THE REMOTE S BATTERY Using a tiny (1.5 mm) Philips screwdriver, remove the three screws from the bottom cover of the remote. The top of the remote will separate. Replace the alkaline battery, 27A 12V. Replace the cover and reinstall the screws at the bottom. The battery should last about a year with average use. Issue: I can t use a cable to connect the camera with its memory card installed to my computer. Fix: You must remove the card from the camera and insert it in a USB adapter or microsd-to- SD-sleeve adapter that you plug into your computer. Issue: I seem to be losing the data from the last file recorded by the camera. Fix: Make sure to stop recording or power off the camera before removing the memory card. A double beep confirms either command. USING THE IPS-20 CHARGER The USB socket at the bottom of the IPS-20 can be connected to the charging cable that comes with your mobile device such as a phone, tablet or music player. The hidden camera can continue to operate while charging a device if the device draws no more than 400mAh of current. Make sure the connecting cable and device don t block the view from the IPS-20 lens. page 8 page 9
