15 ADCP Issue 1 11/2007 Section 2: Installation SECTION 2: INSTALLATION Content Page 1 SITE PREPARATION Link Budget Calculations REPEATER INSTALLATION Mechanical Attachment of Repeater Installation of Repeater Cables SITE PREPARATION Repeater must be installed within 8 to 10 feet (2,5 to 3 meters) of an AC power source ( VAC, Hz). Repeater is connected via coax cable to a donor antenna that is typically located on a rooftop or external wall of a building, directed at the donor cell-site. Maximum cable length is determined by coax link budget. Following local practices install service antenna in the desired coverage area and route coax cable to the repeater. Caution: Service and donor antennas should be installed at different heights to avoid interference problems. 1.1 Link Budget Calculations A link budget is a calculation of all known elements in the link to determine if the signal has the proper strength when it reaches the other end of the link. To make this calculation, the following information should be determined: Signal strength at donor antenna location Antenna gain Total length of transmission cable and loss per unit length at the specified frequency Number of connectors used Loss of each connector at the specified frequency Path loss There will always be some loss of signal strength through the cables and connectors used to connect to the antenna. This loss is directly proportional to the length of the cable and generally inversely proportional to the diameter of the cable. Additional loss occurs at the lightning arrestor and for each connector used and must be considered in planning. The cable vendor can provide a chart indicating the loss for various types and lengths of cable. An example of calculating link budget is shown in Figure 2-1. Determine link budget and after installation is complete, make necessary Gain and Output Power adjustments, see Section 3 Graphical User Interface. Page 2-1
