A make-before-break connector breaks an input/output twisted pair signal creating a point where the network can be accessed. This patch panels on-demand flexibility in monitoring and protecting RJ45 networks is a major advantage over others. An open access point adds flexibility for monitoring/testing/powering/etc. of the circuit. Admonishments Important safety admonishments are used throughout this manual to warn of possible hazards to persons or equipment. An admonishment identifies a possible hazard and then explains what may happen if the hazard is not avoided. The admonishments in the form of Dangers, Warnings, and Cautions must be followed at all times. These warnings are flagged by use of the triangular alert icon (seen below), and are listed in descending order of severity of injury or damage and likelihood of occurrence. When installing or modifying telephone lines, disconnect lines at the network interface before working with uninsulated lines or terminals. Before making any connections verify that all power sources are off. 3 1 DESCRIPTION The Ethernet Test Access Panel (ETAP) is designed to support a variety of UTP cabling systems including standard voice, T1/E1, DS1, DS3, 10 and 100 Base-T. A typical application is shown in Figure 1. Typical Application ETAP consists of a 19-inch rack mountable sheet metal panel containing two PC boards, each with 12 circuits, for a total of 24 circuits per panel. Each circuit consists of a pair of RJ45 jacks and a make-before-break (MBB) card edge connector placed electrically in-line with the RJ jacks. The ETAP system includes a number of Value Added Modules (VAMs), which can be plugged into the MBB connectors. Depending on the desired function, a VAM can either preserve the signal path from RJ to RJ when inserted, or break the signal path. Page 3

4 When inserting a VAM, the MBB connector is designed to make the connection to the board before breaking its connection, and upon withdrawal to make its connection before the connection to the board is lost. In this way, a VAM designed to preserve the signal path will continue to pass signals as it is inserted, in use, and as it is withdrawn. Two VAMs are defined in this manual the Intrusive Test VAM and GR-1089 Lightning Protection VAM. Each MBB card edge connector and VAM are keyed to prevent improper installation. The Intrusive Test VAM (Figure 2) breaks the signal and provides a separate access cord for each direction in the circuit. 5 The GR-1089 Lightning Protection VAM (Figure 3) preserves the signal path, but routes it through transient voltage suppressors within the VAM for the purpose of intra-building surge protection A Figure 3. Lightening Protection VAM 2 PLANNING The ETAP with VAMs adheres to RJ45 industry standards and is interoperable with other 100 Ohm balanced UTP and STP cabling systems and installations. While the ETAP with VAMs will work with all existing standard equipment, for optimal channel performance they should be connected to a category 5 or higher 100 Ohm balanced UTP cabling. Maximum distance between a telecommunications outlet and the horizontal cross connect should not exceed 90 meters (295 ft.). Maximum length of all patch cords and jumpers in the telecommunications closet should be no more than 5 meters (16.4 ft.), and the total length of all patch cords both in the telecommunications closet and at the work area should not exceed 5 meters (16.4 ft.). 3 INSTALLING ETHERNET TEST ACCESS PANEL 3.1 Unpacking and Inspection Unpack and inspect the various components as follows: 1. Inspect the exterior of the shipping container(s) for evidence of rough handling that may have damaged the components in the container. 2. Unpack each container while carefully checking the contents for damage and verify with the packing slip. 3. If damage is found or parts are missing, file a claim with the commercial carrier and notify ADC Customer Service. Save the damaged cartons for inspection by the carrier. Page 5

6 4. Refer to Section 6 Customer Information and Assistance if you need to contact ADC. 5. Save all shipping containers for use if the equipment requires shipment at a future date. The following procedures provide the necessary instructions for installing and wiring an ETAP in an equipment rack. 3.2 Rack Installation Mounting brackets and mounting screws are shipped loose. Mounting brackets may be positioned for either 19 or 23-inch rack installation. Warning: To prevent electrical shock, never install panel in a wet location or during a lightning storm. When installing or modifying telephone lines, disconnect lines at the network interface before working with uninsulated lines or terminals. Before making any connections verify that all power sources are off. This procedure provides instructions for installing the panel in an EIA or WECO 19 or 23-inch equipment rack. Check the work order to determine the panel location in the rack. 1. Obtain the following tools and equipment: Flat blade or Phillips screwdriver (type to match mounting screws) Locate four binder head machine screws provided A Figure 4. When installing in a 19-inch rack use four (6-32 x 0.25 inch screws) provided to attach the wide side of mounting bracket to the panel (wide side of brackets point to the rear of the panel and the narrow side of the brackets are perpendicular to the sides of the panel). See Figure 4. When installing in a 23-inch rack use four (6-32 x 0.25 inch screws) provided to attach narrow side of the mounting bracket to the panel (narrow side of brackets point to the rear of the panel and the wide sides of the brackets are perpendicular to the sides of the panel). Torque these screws to approximately 7 8 pound-inches ( Newton meters). Page 6

7 3. Locate the equipment rack mounting space that is specified for the panel. Note: Total cable distance between switch and data terminal equipment should not exceed 100 meters (328 feet). 4. Place the panel in the assigned mounting space and align the holes in the mounting brackets with the holes in the equipment rack. See Figure 5. #12-24 SCREWS (2 EACH SIDE) A Figure 5. Installing Panel 5. Secure panel mounting brackets to equipment rack using the inch binder head machine screws provided. Torque screws to approximately 27 pound-inches (3.1 Newton meters). 3.3 Ethernet Connections All RJ45 ports and intrusive test cords are wired following the EIA/TIA-568B RJ45 wiring scheme. Be sure to use standard Cat 5, 5E, or 6 straight-through cable including all 8 wires (4 pairs). Pinout information and pair color is shown in Table 1 and Figure 6. Page 7

A frame ground termination (#8 screw) is provided on the panel, for a frame ground connection. This connection must be made in accordance with all local and national electrical codes. 1. Using AWG 16 (1.25mm) solid copper wire, connect one end of the ground wire to the ground stud on the panel (shown in Figure 7). 9 2. To assure proper operation Frame Ground stud should be connected to a good earth ground. There must be no switching or disconnecting devices in the grounding circuit conductor between the power source and the point of connection to the grounding electrode conductor. 3. Connect other end of ground wire to the office ground conductor. Ensure this connection is made using methods and hardware that meets all applicable local and national electrical codes. 4 OPERATION Operation of the two VAMs defined in this manual are described in this section. 4.1 Lightning Protection VAM Each GR-1089 Lightning Protection VAM card is a nonitrusive plug-in module that locks into the ETAP. If protector is tripped it automatically resets itself. If protector is over-exposed and blows out, there should be more evidence in the circuit of equipment suffering from the same over exposure. Remove protection VAM by pushing release button IN and pulling OUT on the outer corners located at the front of the VAM. See Figure 8. RELEASE BUTTON A Figure 8. 10 4.2 Intrusive Test VAM When the Intrusive Test VAM is plugged into the ETAP, the circuit is interrupted and routed to the test cords. The top RJ45 test cord corresponds to the top front port. The bottom RJ45 test cord corresponds to the bottom front port. Each test cord comes with a standard RJ45 output that can be plugged into any standard Ethernet test set or Intrusion Detection System (IDS). Intrusive VAM card applications: Look at the circuit in both directions Performance monitoring of existing Ethernet circuits Test and turn up of new Ethernet services Intrusion Detection System (IDS) Gigabit Ethernet (1000Base-T) T1/E1 4.3 Non-Intrusive Monitoring Non-intrusive or performance monitoring of an Ethernet circuit requires an ADC ETAP Panel a Intrusive Test VAM, a Fluke Networks ATAP-100, and a network analyzer. See Figure 9. Caution: Ethernet circuit will be disrupted if the monitoring equipment is not connected in the correct order. Carefully follow procedure to avoid interrupting the circuit. 1. Plug a network cable into the RJ45 jack located above and below the circuit position in the ETAP that you are going to use. 2. Connect AC power to the ATAP Plug the cables (RJ45 connectors) from the Intrusive Test VAM into the A and B ports on the ATAP Plug the Intrusive Test VAM into the respective circuit position on the ETAP. 5. Plug test equipment cable from network analyzer into one of the monitor ports on the ATAP Follow instructions for monitoring circuits that are provided with the network analyzer. Page 10
