3 Admonishments Important safety admonishments are used throughout this manual to warn of possible hazards to persons or equipment. An admonishment identifies a possible hazard and then explains what may happen if the hazard is not avoided. The admonishments in the form of Dangers, Warnings, and Cautions must be followed at all times. These warnings are flagged by use of the triangular alert icon (seen below), and are listed in descending order of severity of injury or damage and likelihood of occurrence. Danger: Danger is used to indicate the presence of a hazard that will cause severe personal injury, death, or substantial property damage if the hazard is not avoided. Warning: Warning is used to indicate the presence of a hazard that can cause severe personal injury, death, or substantial property damage if the hazard is not avoided. Caution: Caution is used to indicate the presence of a hazard that will or can cause minor personal injury or property damage if the hazard is not avoided. General Safety Precautions Danger: Do not look into the ends of any optic fiber. Exposure to invisible laser radiation may result. Do not assume laser power is turned off or the fiber is disconnected at the other end. Warning: The QLX module is designed to be used with ADC s Soneplex Loop Extender Chassis, Remote Terminal Cabinet, or Soneplex Two-Position Chassis. When used together, the module and chassis (or cabinet) form a Class I Laser Kit which conforms to all applicable standards of 21 CFR If the module is used in any other way, compliance to the above standard is not guaranteed. Warning: Do not insert module edge connectors into the chassis connectors prior to connecting the optical fiber to the module. Exposure to invisible laser radiation may occur if the module edge connectors are allowed to connect with the chassis connectors prior to connecting the optical fiber to the module. Note: For easier installation, maintenance and upgrades ADC has available a PCS Front Access Panel (FAP). The FAP has all the interconnecting cables for this and other chassis and provides wire wrap, RJ45, and DS1 bantam connections at the front of the system. Product information and service can be obtained by writing ADC Telecommunications, Inc., 4900 West 78th Street, Minneapolis, Minnesota 55435; or by contacting Systems Engineering at , ext Chassis Rack Mounting Perform the steps in the following procedure to mount the chassis in an equipment rack. 1. Open the shipping carton and carefully unpack the equipment from the protective packing material. Inspect the chassis for damage. If it is damaged, file a claim with the commercial carrier and contact ADC Telecommunications to reorder. 2. Remove and store the mounting bracket sets that are not to be used. The set attached to the two-inch recess mounting holes is for a WECO rack with holes set 1 inch apart. The other set attached to the five-inch recess mounting holes is for an EIA rack with holes set 1 1 /4 inch apart. (The third set, for wall-mounting, is packed loose in the shipping container.) 3. Check the work order to see which recess is specified: ½-, 2-, or 5-inch. If necessary, move the brackets to the specified mounting holes. (The brackets are attached to the chassis with screws.) 4. Locate the equipment rack mounting space that is specified in the work order. Align the holes in mounting brackets with the holes in the rack. Secure the mounting brackets to the equipment rack with the #12 machine screws provided. 2.2 Chassis Wall Mounting Perform the steps in the following procedure to mount the chassis on a wall. 1. Open the shipping carton and carefully unpack the equipment from the protective packing material. Inspect the chassis for damage. If it is damaged, file a claim with the commercial carrier and contact ADC Telecommunications to reorder. 2. Remove and store the rack-mounting bracket sets that are not to be used. 3. Locate the bracket set for wall-mounting, which is packed loose in the shipping container. Attach this bracket set to the chassis with the hardware provided. 4. Check the work order to determine the wall location specified for mounting the chassis. Page 7
8 5. Mount the chassis on the wall. The chassis should be oriented so that when you are facing the wall, the QLX module inserts from the left and the RJ or wire wrap connectors are on the right. The wall-mount brackets hold the chassis approximately ½ inch from the mounting surface to allow for air flow and easier access. Note: If you are mounting the chassis on drywall or sheetrock material, attach a piece of plywood to the wall and then mount the chassis to the plywood. The plywood piece should be wide enough to span two adjacent wall studs and should be secured into the studs. 2.3 Power and Ground Connections Warning: Before making any connections to the chassis, verify that the power is off (fuse removed at the fuse and alarm panel) and that all plug-in units are removed from the chassis. Perform the steps in the following procedure to make the power and ground connections. 1. Remove the power cover from the rear panel of the chassis to access the power and ground connections. 2. Connect the frame ground wire to the chassis frame ground stud at the upper left corner on the rear of the chassis. Use 16-gauge copper wire and a ring lug terminal. Note: If installing a pre-wired chassis into a PCS system, the power and ground will be pre-wired and labeled Cable #31. Go to Step If the fuse and wire size are not specified in the work order, use 20 AWG wire and 0.75 Amp fuses. 4. Route a pair of power supply wires from two separate power sources to the power supply terminal block at the rear of the chassis. Separately fuse each power source, but do not install the fuses at this time. 5. Label the ends of the two power supply wiring pairs with the following designations: Pair 1: Va, +Va Pair 2: Vb, +Vb 6. Ferrite blocks are shipped with the chassis. Clamp a ferrite block to each pair of wires as shown in Figure 4. Note: Do not insert the frame ground wire through a ferrite block. 7. Connect the power supply wiring to the power supply terminal block observing the voltage polarity. The negative terminals for the 'a' and 'b' inputs are the left two terminals of the strip (see Figure 4). The positive terminals for the 'a' and 'b' inputs are the right two terminals on the strip. Power Supply Terminal Block If installing this chassis into a PCS Delivery system, connect the pre-wired power cable labeled #31 to cable #30 from the PCS Front Access Panel. Note: Ferrite beads are already on the PCS Front Access Panel +24V cabling and are not required at the QLX chassis power terminal strip. 2.4 Fiber Optic Patch Cords-To-Chassis Routing Danger: To avoid exposure to invisible laser radiation, do not look into the ends of any optical fiber or bulkhead connector. Use an optical power meter to identify active fibers. Never assume laser power is turned off or that the fiber is disconnected at the other end. Perform the steps in the following procedure to route fiber optic patch cords to the chassis. 1. Select a fiber optic patch cord pair (singlemode, 9/125 µm) that is long enough to be routed from the Fiber Distribution Frame (or equivalent distribution device) to the QLX Two-Position Chassis. If a QLX protected pair is to be installed, select two fiber pairs. 2. Tag the ends of the patch cord(s) with the circuit ID and the direction of transmission (Transmit or Receive). 3. Connect the patch cord(s) to the appropriate adapter at the Fiber Distribution Frame, as specified in the work order. 4. Route the patch cord(s) to the chassis. Leave the connector dust caps in place on the free end(s) of the patch cords to avoid getting dirt on the face of the connector. Page 9
10 5. Remove the chassis front cover and route the patch cord(s) from the left side using the routing trough on the upper inside of the chassis to reach the desired slot. If a single QLX is to be equipped, install it in the left slot. The right slot is for the second QLX in the protected mode. 6. Leave about 5 to 6 inches of slack of the patch cords to enable the connectors to reach the QLX when it is unseated from the backplane. 7. Place the free end(s) of the patch cord(s) inside the chassis until needed and close the chassis front cover. Note: The Two-Position QLX chassis comes in three different configurations. Determine your configuration and follow the corresponding procedure: 2.5 DS1-To-Chassis, RJ45 Connection Pinouts for the RJ45 connectors are shown in Table 1.
