5 Preface ABOUT THIS MANUAL This manual describes and provides operating instructions for the ADC Next Generation Cross- Connect (NCX) Crossbox Add-on Cabinet (ABX). ADMONISHMENTS Important safety admonishments are used throughout this manual to warn of possible hazards to persons or equipment. An admonishment identifies a possible hazard and then explains what may happen if the hazard is not avoided. The admonishments in the form of Dangers, Warnings, and Cautions must be followed at all times. These warnings are flagged by use of the triangular alert icon (seen below) and are listed in descending order of severity of injury or damage and likelihood of occurrence. Danger: Danger is used to indicate the presence of a hazard that will cause severe personal injury, death, or substantial property damage if the hazard is not avoided. Warning: Warning is used to indicate the presence of a hazard that can cause severe personal injury, death, or substantial property damage if the hazard is not avoided. Caution: Caution is used to indicate the presence of a hazard that will or can cause minor personal injury or property damage if the hazard is not avoided. GENERAL SAFETY PRECAUTIONS Warning: Wet conditions increase the potential for receiving an electrical shock when installing or using electrically-powered equipment. To prevent electrical shock, never install or use electrical equipment in a wet location or during a lightning storm. Danger: Use adequate lifting equipment when moving or installing the cabinet. Verify that the maximum lift weight rating of the equipment is sufficient to handle the weight of the cabinet. Danger: Do not stand under a cabinet as it is being hoisted into position for mounting. A failure of the lifting equipment or apparatus could result in serious personal injury. Warning: Before digging, check with all local utilities for the presence of buried cables or pipes. 14 3 INSTALLATION The main steps in installation are determining how the add-on cabinet will be used, punching out the cable holes to be used, mounting the add-on cabinet on the crossbox, and routing and splicing the cable stub. Use the following procedure. 1. Determine the following based on the installation plan for the add-on cabinet: a. Is this add-on cabinet equipped with S2 or S10 blocks? Refer to Section 1.2 on Page 1 for a comparison of the two applications. b. Will the add-on cabinet be mounted on the left side or right side of the crossbox cabinet? Note the door is field reversible to provide for swinging in either direction. c. Will the network cable (pre-terminated stub) be routed through the cross-connect cabinet or will it be routed through the bottom of the add-on cabinet. For an illustration of the two routes, refer to Figure 2 and Figure 3 on Page 2. d. Note, also, through which holes the jumpers will be routed. Normally, the jumpers pass through the front side of the cabinet (leftmost holes on rightside add-on cabinet, rightmost holes on leftside add-on cabinet). 2. Based on the expected cable routing, shift the termination block panel to the left or right. Note: To shift the termination block panel, lift it off the slots it is hanging on and move it across to the new position it. For an illustration, see Figure 6 on Page Using a hole puncher, punch out the holes selected for jumper and cable pass-through. 4. Open the crossbox to provide a clear view of the side of the crossbox on which the add-on cabinet will be mounted. 5. With the assistance of another person: a. Exactly position the add-on cabinet on the side of the crossbox cabinet and hold the cabinet steadily in place. b. Mark the position on the crossbox of the add-on cabinet mounting holes shown in Figure 10. c. Mark the location on the crossbox of the cable holes punched out of the add-on cabinet in step 2. d. Temporarily set aside the add-on cabinet. 6. Drill holes on the side of the crossbox for the mounting screws locations just marked. 7. Using a hole puncher, punch out the holes on the side of the crossbox for the cable hole locations just marked. Page 8

15 MOUNTING HOLES MOUNTING HOLES A Figure 10. Location of Mounting Holes in Add-On Cabinet 8. Mount the add-on cabinet on the side of the cross-box using four screws installed in the mounting holes just drilled (shown in Figure 10). 9. Install conduit sleeves and seals (provided) in the cable holes punched out in the add-on cabinet and crossbox. 10. Route the stub cable through the chosen physical route to the splice location for the network cable (or if the adjunct DLSM cabinet or broadway loop cabinet). 11. Splice the cable stub to the network cable or termination interface. 12. Close the add-on box if jumpering will not be done at this time. Page 9
