4 Hardware Updater 4 About the Hardware Updater Users can update the firmware on their Turning Technologies hardware via the Hardware Updater. The Hardware Updater is available for download from the Turning Technologies website. 5 Hardware Updater 5 Technical Requirements The following are required for the Hardware Updater to properly function. Microsoft Windows 32-bit or 64-bit XP, Vista, 7 or 8 Intel or AMD 600 Mhz class processor (1 GHz or higher recommended) 256 MB RAM (256 MB or more of available RAM recommended) 100 MB hard disk space (an additional 32 MB is required if Microsoft.NET Framework 2.0 is not installed) Standard USB 2.0 port Ethernet or compatible wireless network card Active Internet connection Compatible Devices: ResponseCard XR ResponseCard NXT ResponseCard AnyWhere ResponseCard Programmer RF Receiver (RRRF-02) RF+ Receiver (RRRF-03) RF Receiver (RRRF-04) Proctor Receiver (RRRF-03-P) IMPORTANT If using a firewall, be sure to allow updates. permission to connect. Downloading the Hardware Updater Visit the Turning Technologies website to download the Hardware Updater. NOTE Using an older version of the software may result in new ResponseCard firmware reverting to old firmware 1 Go to 2 Click on the Downloads icon in the upper right corner of the home page. 3 Select Hardware Updater 4 Enter the required information on the Software Downloads Registration and click Submit. 5 Click the Download icon to start the download. 6 Click Accept to agree to the terms and conditions or click X to cancel the download. 7 When prompted to Save the setup file, it is recommended to save the file to a recognizable specified location (ie, Desktop or flash drive).

6 Hardware Updater 6 Installing the Hardware Updater Please be sure you have full administrative privileges to download and install software. If you are unsure, check with your IT Administrator. 1 Double-click the saved setup file. 2 Click Next on the InstallShield Wizard. 3 Select I accept the terms in the license agreement or I do not accept the terms in the license agreement. Selecting I do not accept the terms in the license agreement cancels the install. 4 Click Next on the InstallShield Wizard. 5 Optionally, enter your Username and Organization. 6 Select to allow Anyone who uses this computer (all users) or Only for me access to the Hardware Updater. 7 Click Next on the InstallShield Wizard. 8 Click Install on the InstallShield Wizard to complete the installation. 9 Click Finish to exit the InstallShield Wizard.

8 Hardware Updater 8 Connecting via a Proxy Server Some networks require the use of a proxy server to connect to external servers. If you are unsure if a proxy connection is required, contact your IT Administrator. 1 Open the Hardware Updater. 2 Select Connect using proxy server. 3 Click Proxy Settings. 4 Select Automatically detect proxy settings or Manually configure proxy settings. 5 If entering proxy settings manually, enter the proxy server address and port number. If the proxy server requires authentication, select My proxy requires authentication and enter the Username, Password and Domain. 6 Click Test to test the connection. 7 Click Done. Updating a Receiver Hardware Updater 2.0 supports RF (RRRF-02), RF+ (RRRF-03), RF (RRRF-04) and Proctor (RRRF-03-P) receivers. 1 Close out of all other Turning Technologies applications and unplug all other Turning Technologies hardware. 2 Open the Hardware Updater. 3 Plug in the RRRF-02, RRRF-03, RRRF-04 or RRRF-03-P receiver. NOTE Only plug in one device at a time. The version number will turn black if the device does not have the latest firmware version. 4 Click Update Firmware. WARNING DO NOT UNPLUG THE DEVICE DURING THE UPDATE! 5 Unplug the device only after the prompt indicates that it is safe to do so. The device now has the latest firmware. Updating a ResponseCard ResponseCard XR, ResponseCard NXT, ResponseCard AnyWhere and the ResponseCard Programmer can receive firmware updates via the Hardware Updater. A mini USB cable is required for the firmware update. NOTE A standard 4-pin Type A to a 5-pin Type B mini USB cable can be purchased from the Turning Technologies Student Store or at any major electronics retailer. 1 Close out of all other Turning Technologies applications and unplug any other Turning Technologies hardware. 2 Open the Hardware Updater.

9 Hardware Updater 9 3 Connect the ResponseCard to the PC with a mini USB cable. NOTE Only plug in one device at a time. The version number will turn black if the device does not have the latest firmware version. 4 Select the desired language. 5 Click Update Firmware. WARNING DO NOT UNPLUG THE DEVICE DURING THE UPDATE! 6 Unplug the device only after the prompt indicates that it is safe to do so. The device now has the latest firmware. Updating ResponseCard NXTs Over the Air The over the air option is useful if a large quantity of ResponseCard NXTs need updated. The over the air process requires a RRRF-03, RRRF-04 or RRRF-03-P receiver and a minimum ResponseCard NXT firmware of TIP Find the firmware version of a ResponseCard NXT by pressing the softkey below the Wrench icon. Press the right arrow until Device Info appears on-screen. Press the center Enter key, then press the right arrow. 1 Open the Hardware Updater. 2 Plug in a RRRF-03, RRRF-04 or RRRF-03-P receiver. 3 Click the Update NXT Devices Over the Air tab. 4 Verify the channel on the receiver matches the channel on the ResponseCards. IMPORTANT A warning message will appear if another receiver within 200 feet is on the same channel. 5 Click Start Update. 6 Press any number button on the ResponseCard NXT to begin the download. ResponseCards updating to the new firmware appear under the Updating tab. ResponseCards that have completed updating to the new firmware appear under the Current tab. ResponseCards that did not successfully download the new firmware appear under the Needs Attention tab. Using the Over the Air Recovery Mode Recovery mode is used to restore ResponseCard NXTs with black screens. 1 Place a check in the box next to Recovery Mode. 2 Click Start Update.

10 Hardware Updater 10 3 Remove the batteries from the ResponseCard NXT. 4 Press and hold the five (5) button while reinserting the batteries. 5 Release the five (5) button after the batteries are securely reinserted. The ResponseCard NXT will restart updating in recovery mode. 6 Repeat steps 3-5 for any additional ResponseCard NXTs. 7 Click Stop after all ResponseCard NXTs have completed updating.
