In an ever changing A/V industry, where complex new products come to the market regularly, Biamp Systems is one of the few manufacturers running four-day training seminars on a bi-weekly basis. This month s newsletter will cover presets inside out, from basic to advanced programming skills. Biamp Technical Support Team Presets 101 Why and when do we need presets? Presets are a quick and efficient way to recall a known configuration of one or multiple DSP blocks. The process of creating presets is the same for Audia or Nexia software. A preset resides in the layout file (.dap or.nex) and can be recalled from the Audia/Nexia software, a davinci panel or an external trigger (Select 8, contact closure or 3 rd party controller). Presets DSP blocks Two types of preset blocks are available to the designer: Preset button block Use a preset button to recall the preset from Audia/Nexia software, a davinci panel or a third party controller. Example: Here is a preset button block with two presets assigned. (Note: A preset button is not required if recalling presets via RS232/Telnet.) Remote Preset block Use a remote preset block if the recall of the preset should be triggered from a logic signal. The preset will be recalled for every 0 to 1(low to high) transition on the logic input. Example: 4 x normally closed momentary switches connected to the logic inputs of a Voltage Control Box (VCB). (Note: Blue highlighted text indicates the last recalled preset.) Things to remember about presets Preset buttons, logic gates (NOT/AND/NAND/OR/NOR/XOR), logic boxes/vcb and Select 8 cannot be included to a preset. A preset can only affect the state of one or multiple processing blocks, i.e. it cannot change the signal flow between blocks or add/remove processing blocks to a design. Preset ID s range from 1001 to 9999 and are not recycled. Unless you intend to use Fine grain presets (See advanced programming section), keep in mind that presets recall the state of the entire processing block. It is possible to create/edit a preset while connected to a system, providing you send the updated preset configuration to the DSP unit once finished. Did you know? 2 PAGE 2 Creating presets step by step To Create/Edit a preset 1. On the menu bar, click on Presets Create/Edit/Recall. 2. Although everything on the preset editor dialog box is self explanatory, here is a quick overview of its features. Preset name and ID # Set a preset as power-up default to recall the preset each time the system is powered up. Click on New to create a new preset This window is listing the available DSP blocks: i.e. DSP blocks that can be included in the preset. This window is listing the Selected DSP block: i.e. DSP blocks that are included in the preset. The preset Library is listing presets already created and available to the designer. Double click on a preset to recall it. 3. Edit the preset name as required. 4. Select the DSP blocks to be included in your preset using the Add/Remove Selection arrows (drag & drop also available) Note: All DSP blocks are included to the preset by default. To determine which block you would like to include to the preset, use the block label or DSP block code (available in property sheet). 3. Edit the state of each DSP block to be included in the preset as required. (Note: Right click on the DSP block and select Open Control Dialog to edit a block from the preset editor.) 6. Save the preset. It now appears in the preset library at the bottom. The green arrow indicates the last recalled preset. 7. To assign the preset to a remote preset or preset button block, here is a step by step procedure: 1. Right click on the Button Control and select Assign Preset 2. Select Preset from drop -down menu. 3. Preset is now assigned to DSP block and then recall the preset to test. (Note: A preset can only be assigned to one DSP block at a time) Tips and Tricks Once a preset created, adding new DSP blocks to a preset or updating settings of a block already included in a preset is only three simple clicks away. 1. Recall the preset you would like to update. 2. Set the state of the block 3. Right click on the block to select Add to last recalled preset. The block is now part of the preset.

3 PAGE 3 Advanced programming Preset of a remote preset Including a remote preset block to a preset allows you to modify its preset assignment. (Note: Only remote preset DSP blocks can be included in a preset, not preset button blocks.) Typical applications include: 1. Rotating presets: i.e. One remote preset block recalling multiple presets. Each time a preset is recalled, the preset assignment is updated to the next preset. Example: Assign preset 1002 to a remote preset block and include the remote preset block to preset Then assign preset 1001 to the same remote preset block and save its assignment to preset Preset assignment is now rotating between 1001 and When recalling preset 1001, the remote preset block assignment changes to preset When recalling preset 1002, the remote preset block assignment changes back to preset Creating banks of presets: i.e. Expanding limitations on the maximum number of presets possibly assigned to a single remote preset DSP block (Max 10 presets). See attached.dap file for more details. 3. Override preset selection: i.e. Having control on whether a preset recall is accessible to the user or not. Fine Grain Presets - A New Feature in Audia V4.1! Editing the preset fields of a DSP block, (i.e. limiting the affect of a preset to a set of user defined fields) is a powerful new software feature of Audia v4.1. Example: Recall a single cross point change on a large matrix mixer without changing the current unknown state of other crosspoints. Here is a step by step procedure on how to enable fine grain presets in your design: 1. In the preset editor, highlight the DSP block and click on: Edit Block Fields 2. Select fields to be edited by the preset. Other fields will not be affected by the preset. Recall presets from a davinci panel Recall a preset from a davinci panel by using a button control with the DSP block type set to Preset in the data attribute tab of the property sheet. Provide visual indication of the last recalled preset by using an LED control set to Preset in the data attributes tab of the property sheet. Recall presets from 3rd party controller Recalling a preset from a third party controller via Telnet/RS232 could not be simpler! Here is template ATP/NTP string: RECALL 0 PRESET 1002<LF> This command will recall preset 1002 (where 1002 is the preset ID #). (Note: the device number will always be 0 since presets apply to the entire system.)
