Mapserver Foundation 2005 Nov 2005
New OSGeo Foundation: Proposed founding projects GRASS GIS Founded 4th February 2006, Chicago
OSGeo Foundation OSGeo MISSION:... establish and support a diverse open source community to foster the development, advancement and promotion of open geospatial software technology and data... Basically three core issues: Free and open source software Public geodata Education and training
OSGeo Foundation Structure Board of Directors (5 now 9 finally) 3 Officers Arnulf Christl Chris Holmes Gary Lang Markus Neteler Frank Warmerdam - Mapbender GeoServer/GeoTools MapGuide Autodesk GRASS GDAL/OGR 45 voting members Initial Foundation projects, all with Project Steering Committees GRASS GIS
OSGeo Foundation Fact sheet 1 First year's funding: > USD (donated by Autodesk US, only 1st year) Legal form? It is planned to be a 501(c)3 charitable corporation incorporated in Delaware, USA (tax-exempt). Who owns/controls the foundation? The foundation is controlled by it's voting members who select a board of directors to control day to day operations. Is the foundation controlled by Autodesk? No.
OSGeo Foundation Fact sheet 2 Requirements for a project to join? a new project enters in incubation (similar to the Apache Foundation projects) where the following is checked: the code is under an OSI approved license code clear of encumberances (no patents, copyright issues) healthy community project is "geospatial" in a wider sense: it can be software, public data, educational material,... Each project has to form a Project Steering Committee (PSC) to interact with the foundation: formalization process GRASS-PSC is going to be formed soon please nominate more candidates
Today & Future International: Continue with GRASS development, embed into OSGeo foundation to harmonize the GFOSS world for users and clients National: Think about forming a tax-exempt charity (ONLUS) to better serve the Italian GFOSS community You: Join us use GFOSS today!
