Intelligent Network IN IN 11 1
Intelligent Networks Intelligent Networks are a method of delivering switched telecommunications services such as Freephone, Virtual Private Networks and Calling Card calls. It is based on separating the service intelligence from the network switching function, so that each can be developed and upgraded separately. A centrally managed service data base is used for service management and provisioning IN 11 2
IN Standardization AIN: Advanced Intelligent Network CS: Capability Set INAP: Intelligent Network Application Protocol IN 11 3
Number Translation Services These are services where the called number is translated into a new called number, often with some variation in the billing for the call. Freephone Calls are free to the caller (Anrufer). In fact, the charging for the call is redirected to the callee (Angerufener), at some adjusted rate. Premium Rate Calls are charged to the caller at a higher than usual rate. Some part of the extra is paid to the callee. Personal Number A subscriber can use one number at which to receive calls. The calls are redirected to whatever phone number the subscribers have designated as their current number (e.g. moving between home number, mobile number and office number). Universal Number Calls to one central number are redirected depending on parameters of the call (e.g. time of day, area code prefix of caller). This can be used by companies to have their calls forwarded to a different number outside office hours, or for companies that provide a local service (e.g. Pizza Service, Taxi). IN 11 4
Virtual Private Networks With VPN services, a group of customers (typically the employees of a company) are given the illusion that they are on a private phone network (e.g., a PABX network), although it is implemented over the PSTN. Usually they will have shortnumber dialing for calling other numbers within the group, and companies negotiate billing discounts for traffic on their VPN. IN 11 5
Number Portability With the deregulation of telephone services, many new local exchange carriers are starting business. To avoid their being at a disadvantage, there is usually a rule that customers must be able to keep their phone numbers if they switch carriers. Hence each carrier must identify during call setup whether the dialed number is one of their own customers or one of their competitors',and route the call accordingly. The great problem with local number portability is that there is no other way, but to examine the number itself, to determine whether an IN service should be triggered. In fact, one solution is to trigger the number portability service for all calls, a rather expensive solution. IN 11 6
IN Structure IN 11 7
IN Definitions IP: Intelligent Peripheral This is a system which provides extra features such as playing announcements and doing voice recognition. SCP: Service Control Point This is a computer system which does the intelligent network call processing during the operation of the call. Because of this, the system must be very reliable, and fault tolerant systems are typically used, with hot standby systems running in case of problems. SSP: Service Switching Point This is typically an upgraded digital telephone exchange. It has triggers set to fire when a call being set up matches the criteria of one of the SCP's services, so that it can pass information about the call to the SCP and allow the SCP to control how it (the SSP) handles the call. IN 11 8
IN Definitions (cont.) SCE: Service Creation Environment This is the computer system which contains applications for a service logic programmer to define a new service and its service logic SMP: Service Management Point This is a computer system which runs the service management applications. This includes remote management of the Service Control Points, downloading new service logic, downloading new service provisioning data (e.g. new freephone numbers) and receiving service log data from the SCPs. IN 11 9
Service Creation and Processing In the past, IN service logic programs were developed largely from scratch for each new service. To aid in the rapid development of new services, standard Service Independent Building Blocks (SIBs) are being developed. A service logic program will then be made by composing these SIBs. The following diagram shows how a service logic program is triggered at a PointOfInitiation (POI) in the SSP's Basic Call Processing, runs one or more SIBs, then rejoins the Basic Call Processing at a Point Of Return (POR).
