GETTING STARTED WITH YOUR FIBER GUARDIAN

GETTING STARTED WITH YOUR FIBER GUARDIAN The installation process can be divided into the following main steps: Preparing for installation Installing the unit in a rack Connecting the power and the network cables Cleaning and connecting optical fi bers Turning on the unit Setting up the unit (platform application) Setting up the unit (optical application) PREPARING FOR INSTALLATION Before installing your unit, you should take the following into consideration: The chosen location provides adequate clearance for maintenance procedures, including a front opening of the drawer that allows access to the OTDR module inside the unit and enough slacks for jumpers if you want to open the drawer without disconnecting all ports. The location is an environmentally-controlled area that meets the minimum operating parameters. The location is isolated from strong electromagnetic fi elds produced by electrical devices. The power cable and power supply are compatible with your power service. The power source is properly grounded and falls within the internal power supply rating. The location is in an Electrostatic discharge (ESD)-safe work area. INSTALLING YOUR UNIT IN A RACK The rack (which is not included with the unit) should provide suffi cient vertical clearance to insert the unit. The height of the unit is two rack units (2U) high or about 3 ½ in. All electrical cabling can be connected only through the back panel. To install the mounting brackets on your unit: 1. Position the unit so that its bottom panel rests on a fl at surface, such as a table. 2. Align the holes of the fi rst bracket with the holes of the unit casing at the position that best suits your installation needs. You can even invert position of the mounting bracket, if necessary. 3. Fix the fi rst bracket on the unit with the supplied screws (four screws per bracket). 4. Repeat steps 3 and 4 with the other bracket, ensuring that you place the bracket at the exact same position (the orientation of the bracket, as well as the set of holes on the bracket and on the unit s casing). 5. Place the unit in the rack at the desired height. 6. Fix the unit in place using four x 1/2 in. screws (four M6 screws for the ETSI racks). 2

Grounding Your Unit To ground your unit: 1. Remove the two Phillips screws. Remove the grounding lug from the rear panel of the unit. 2. Prepare the ground wire (minimum 14 AWG). Attach one end to the unit s grounding lug using a crimping tool. 3. Use the two Phillips screws to attach the grounding lug and wire assembly to the rear panel of the unit. 4. Ground the other end of the wire as per local regulations. CONNECTING THE POWER AND THE NETWORK CABLES The Fiber Guardian is available with either AC or DC power supplies. The unit has redundant AC or redundant DC power modules. To benefi t from this redundancy, be sure to connect each power supply to a separate circuit. As soon as you connect the unit to a power source, the Baseboard Management Controller (BMC) starts its initialization. During this operation, the LEDs on the front panel will be lit in the following sequence: All LEDs will turn to yellow for about 40 seconds. All the LEDs will turn off for about 5 seconds. Finally, the power LED ( ) will turn to blinking green, indicating that the BMC is now ready (unit is in standby) and you are ready to turn on the unit. To connect the power to AC power supplies: 1. Connect the cords to the main power inlets located at the back of the unit. 2. Connect the other end of the cords to the power sources. To connect the power to DC power supplies: 1. Crimp each power lead (minimum 14 AWG) with a UL-listed pressure terminal connector (ring type). The connector must be suitable for 14 AWG wires. 2. Pair the power leads with the appropriate power terminal (located at the back of the unit), respecting the polarity as indicated just below the terminal block. 3. Tighten the screws to attach the power leads to the unit. 3

To connect the network cables: 1. Connect one end of a network cable to the Ethernet port located at the back of your unit. Connect the other end of the cable to the network itself. 2. In order to setup your unit, connect one end of a network cable to the Ethernet port located at the front of your unit. Connect the other end of the cable to a portable computer as illustrated in the side image. CLEANING AND CONNECTING OPTICAL FIBERS To connect the fiber-optic cable to the port: 1. Inspect the fi ber using a fi ber inspection probe, such as an EXFO FIP product or a standard microscope. If the fi ber is clean, proceed to connecting it to the port. If the fi ber is dirty, clean in accordance to good cleaning practices. 2. Carefully align the connector and port to prevent the fi ber end from touching the outside of the port or rubbing against other surfaces. If your connector features a key, ensure that it is fully fi tted into the port s corresponding notch. 3. Push the connector in so that the fi ber-optic cable is fi rmly in place, thus ensuring adequate contact. If your connector features a screw sleeve, tighten the connector enough to fi rmly maintain the fi ber in place. Do not overtighten: this will damage the fi ber and the port. After plugging in the proper fi bers, your unit must look as follows: 4

TURNING ON THE UNIT As soon as you connect the unit to a power source, the companion starts its initialization (refer to the initialization process on page 3). Once the initialization is complete, you can turn on the host. Once the host is on, the operating system will be started automatically. Several components must be initialized before you can actually send commands or connect to the unit. 1. Make sure the companion is up and running. From a DOS windows in your laptop connected to the FG-750 front port, ping the IP address: (this is the companion IP address). 2. Press the power button until the power LED turns to green (non-blinking) and release it. 3. Make sure the OS is up and running. From a DOS windows in your laptop connected to the FG-750 front port, ping the IP address: (This is the fi x OS IP address). The unit must respond. 5

SETTING UP THE UNIT (PLATFORM APPLICATION) Before setting up your IP address, make sure you have two different IP addresses under your corporate LAN: one for the Host (operating system and remote access) and another for the Companion (maintenance component). All the confi guration and provisioning will be perform from the laptop connected to the FG-750 front port. To configure the network settings: 1. Connect to the Host Web UI as follows: 1a. From your computer, open a Web browser. 1b. In the address bar, type HostWebUI. 1c. When the application prompts you, enter Admin as the username and Admin as the password. 1d. Click OK to open the session. 2. From the Configuration menu, select Host. 3. Depending on the type of parameters that you wish to modify, under Host Settings or Companion Settings, select Network. 4. To modify the displayed information, click Edit. 6

5. Depending on your needs, go to the Rear adapter IPv4 configuration or Rear adapter IPv6 configuration section. 6. Confi gure your network settings according to defi ned table values in FG-750 Network Confi guration Requirements in the prior-to-install requirements document. 7. Click Apply to confi rm the changes. 7

SETTING UP THE UNIT (OPTICAL APPLICATION) ACCESSING TO THE P2P OPTICAL APPLICATION 1. Connect to the P2P optical application Web UI as follows: 1a. From your computer, open a Web browser. 1b. In the address bar, type 1c. When the application prompts you, enter Admin as the username and Admin as the password. 1d. Click OK to open the session. DETECTING THE FIBERS CONNECTED TO THE OPTICAL PORTS To detect new ports: Detection of ports, if successful, will trigger optical route creation and referencing (testing) on all of them, unless systems settings were set differently. Detecting a port verifi es if a fi ber is on the port and properly connected. It then creates an object called an optical route, which will be automatically given a name from the port ID. Once you validated all monitored routes are properly connected, follow the instructions in this section. 1. Access to the FG-750 web UI as described in section Accessing to the P2P optical application 2. From the main menu, select Configuration > Remote Test Unit. 3. Under OTAU section, click Detect. 4. From the displayed dialog box, select a wavelength. 5. Select the ports you want to use at this wavelength. Note: To quickly select or clear the checked boxes, use respectively Select All and Unselect All. 6. Click Start to start the automatic detection of the ports. The RTU will generate test setups for the new wavelengths. 7. Repeat the previous steps with other wavelengths and ports, if necessary. The status of the ports (detected or not) is indicated in the OTAU section. 10

Note: Once the manual detection of fiber ports is completed, there is a chance that the ports remain undetected even though the fiber is connected. These ports can be detected forcefully by selecting Force Detection of Fiber. To use Force Detection of Fiber: Force detection by-passes the injection loss criteria to create or not create an optical route object. In some cases, such as using cascaded switches with a WDM/coupler, it may in fact exceed the level of loss expected normally to detect ports. Before starting the force detection of the fiber, make sure that the fiber is properly connected to the port and the OTDR trace and route length correspond to the expected monitored route by running the following ad-hoc test: To verify monitored routes: 1. Access to the FG-750 web UI as described in section Accessing to the P2P optical application. 2. Make sure the fiber is properly identified in each port of the Fiber Guardian according to information provided in the table FG-750 Monitored Routes Requirements in the prior-to-install requirements document. 2a. From the main menu, select Manual test > Ad Hoc. 2b. Select each port to be detected under Define a route manually. 2c. Click on Start. 3. In the Test Results table and graph, verify total distance corresponds to expected value according to information you documented in the routes table FG-750 Monitored Routes Requirements in the prior-to-install requirements document. 11

Once you verified proper fiber connection and information, the following process describes the force detection functionality: 1. From the main menu, select Configuration > Remote Test Unit. 2. From the tree view, select the optical test head to which the optical routes are connected. 3. Under OTAU, click Detect. 4. From the displayed dialog box, select a wavelength. 5. Select the ports you want to use at this wavelength. 6. Check Force Detection and click Start to start the force detection of the ports. 7. The forcibly detected ports will be outlined in red. 12

CONFIGURING ALERTS The application can alert users when certain events or combinations of events occur. To generate the alerts, the application uses pre-defi ned templates called alert types. To configure alert: 1. From the main menu select Configuration > Alerting Types. 2. From the tree view, select Fiber Fault and click on Edit. 3. Select proper channel type (Detailed by default). 4. Check the Is Active box. 5. Select events that will be sent. 6. Indicate which user will receive the notifi cation. 7. Click Save. Note: If the SNMP channel type is selected, the machine address is displayed for the destination table. Note: You can add more alerting types by clicking on the Add button ( ) and following process described above. 13

VALIDATE LEARNING PHASE HAS COMPLETED Although fault(s) can be detected from next acquisition after reference, it is good practice to let the system complete learning phase such that best possible thresholds are applied, as close as possible to the user target threshold set values. 1. Connect to the Host Web UI as follows: 1a. From your computer, open a Web browser. 1b. In the address bar, type 1c. When the application prompts you, enter Admin as the username and Admin as the password. 1d. Click OK to open the session. 2. From the Reports menu, select Event Log. 3. Make sure the learning phase has completed for every port you detected in section Detecting the Fibers Connected to the Optical Ports. 14
