3 Preface The ftserver 6600 Upgrade Procedure contains technical information for upgrading ftserver 6600 systems operating under Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server and Windows 2003 (W2K3) Enterprise Server. 4 1. Introduction This document describes the procedures for upgrading ftserver 6600 systems to systems with 4-way 3.0-GHz processors (with 4 MB cache). The upgrade is not customer installable. It must be installed by Stratus personnel or an authorized service provider. IMPORTANT NOTE: Before the system is upgraded, call the CAC and provide the Site ID of the system in order that appropriate changes in the warranty database can be made. 2. Hardware Requirements ftserver 6600 upgrades consist of replacing existing CPU enclosures. DIMMs are removed from the original enclosures and installed in the replacement enclosures. The procedure may also include installing additional memory. 3. Software Requirements Upgraded ftserver 6600 systems are supported by the following operating systems: Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server (W2K) Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition (W2K3) ftserver System Software (minimum release ) 4. Upgrade Marketing IDs The marketing IDs of the ftserver 6600 upgrades are listed in the following table. DIMM Configurations in ftserver 6600 systems Before performing the upgrade procedure, make sure you are familiar with the following information about supported memory configurations in ftserver 6600 systems. Up to 12 DIMMs can be housed in each CPU enclosure, providing memory configurations from 2 GB to 12 GB. Both CPU enclosures must be configured with identical total memory size. DIMMs of different capacities and from different manufacturers can be mixed within a CPU enclosure, but not within a single memory bank. DIMMs of identical capacity must be mounted in the corresponding memory slot in each CPU enclosure. Due to the interleaving requirements of the ftserver 6600, the DIMMs must be installed in groups of four. All DIMMs within each group of four must be of the same capacity. The following table shows the possible memory configurations. 7 6. Upgrade Procedure 1. Upgrade the ftserver 6600 system software to release or greater. To upgrade the software refer to Chapter 7 in the Stratus ftserver Software Installation and Configuration Guide (R002W) that is included with the upgrade materials. 2. Shut down the ftserver 6600 system. 3. Turn off power to the monitor and any peripheral devices. 4. Remove the CPU enclosures. CAUTION: The CPU enclosure contains hazardous voltages. After removing the enclosure, wait 1 minute before removing its cover. 5. Remove the cover from the first enclosure. 6. Ground yourself by wearing a grounding strap while handling the DIMMs. Hold the DIMMs by the edges only. Remove the DIMMS as follows: a. Remove the airflow cover over the processors and DIMMs. b. Remove each DIMM from its socket. 7. Install the DIMMs removed from the original enclosure (and any additional DIMMs) in the replacement enclosure in the configurations shown in Section 5. IMPORTANT: Make sure the DIMMs removed from the original CPU enclosure are installed in exactly the same locations in the replacement enclosure. 8. Repeat the procedure for the remaining enclosure(s). 9. Install the replacement enclosures in the ftserver 6600 system. 10. Power on the system. 7. Final Steps All components from the ftserver 6600 system that were not used in the upgrade procedure should be returned to Stratus Technologies ATTN: Mark Dubois 109 Powdermill Road Maynard, MA 01754, USA. Material not returned to Stratus within 60 days of receipt of delivery of upgrade components will be charged to the responsible Sales cost center. 4
