5 1. Introduction The purpose of this document is to describe the procedures for upgrading ftserver 5600 systems (with 2.8-GHz or 3.2-GHz processors) to ftserver 6600 systems (with 2.0-GHz or 3.0-GHz processors). There are four procedures, each of which is different from the others. It is important that the correct procedure is followed for the system being upgraded. The following are the ftserver 5600 configurations that can be upgraded: Systems with 2.8-GHz Processors and Windows 2000 Advanced Server Systems with 2.8-GHz Processors and Windows Server 2003 Systems with 3.2-GHz Processors and Windows 2000 Advanced Server Systems with 3.2-GHz Processors and Windows Server 2003 Upgrades are not customer installable. They must be installed by Stratus personnel or an authorized service provider. IMPORTANT NOTE: The Field Engineer installing the upgrade is required to call the CAC and provide the Site ID of the system in which the upgrade is taking place. This is required in order that the appropriate changes in the warranty database can be made. If the CAC is not notified of the upgrade, the warranty automatically defaults to 90 days. 2. Hardware Requirements The hardware requirements are quite similar for the four configurations of ftserver 5600 systems. The main difference is that the core I/O enclosures in systems with 2.8-GHz processors cannot be reused in the ftserver 6600 systems and memory modules (DIMMs) in any ftserver 5600 systems cannot be reused in ftserver 6600 systems. To determine the system s processor type and operating system perform the following steps: 1. Click on Start in the lower left corner of the desktop. 2. Select Settings. 3. Select Control Panel. 4. Select System. 5. The screen that appears has information on both the operating system and processor. 2.1 ftserver 5600 system with 2.8-GHz processor Upgrade The following ftserver 5600 components CAN be reused in the ftserver They should be removed from the ftserver 5600 and installed in the ftserver Expansion I/O Enclosures Disks PCI Adapters (except Video adapter) Peripherals (monitor, keyboard, mouse, printers, tape drives) 1

8 5. Upgrade Procedures Refer to section 2 to determine the system s processor type and operating system; then select the appropriate upgrade procedure below GHz System with Windows 2000 Advanced Server This procedure requires that the disks be removed from the core I/O enclosure and installed in the replacement core I/O enclosure. Before they can be removed, they must be deported using the Veritas Enterprise Administrator (VEA) console. If you encounter problems deporting the disks, refer to Chapter 5 in the VERITAS Volume Manager 3.1 for Windows 2000 User s Guide for detailed information on deporting the disk drives. Perform the steps in the order listed Stop all processes using the volumes in the dynamic disk group, including all I/O to files. If you do not stop volume processes, there is the possibility that data written to internal buffers may not get written to disk, resulting in data loss. It is also recommended that you back up all data on your volumes before you move disks to another computer. Click the Start button, point to Programs, and then click VERITAS. Click VERITAS Enterprise Administrator. In the Connection dialog box, type the name of the system. 5. Under Management Console, select the host system name you just entered. 6. Select Volumes. 7. Make sure the status of the volumes on the disks is Healthy. If the status is not Healthy, you must repair the volumes before you move the disks. To repair a basic mirrored volume (mirror set) perform the following steps: a. Right-click the mirrored volume you want to repair, click Repair Volume, and then follow the instructions on your screen. b. The mirrored volume's status should change to Regenerating, then Healthy. If the volume does not return to the Healthy status, right-click the volume and then click Resynchronize Mirror. 8. Once you have determined that the disks are healthy, right-click on a disk name in the dynamic disk group or the dynamic disk group name in the tree view, and select Deport Dynamic Disk Group from the menu that appears. A warning message asks if you are sure you want to deport the disk group. 9. Click Yes to deport the dynamic disk group. 4

9 The process of deporting a dynamic disk group puts the contained disks in the Offline state and all volumes in the Stopped state. 10. Shut down the ftserver 5600 system. 11. Turn off power to the monitor and any peripheral devices. 12. At the rear of the cabinet, disconnect the power cords from the AC distribution assembly and all the cables connected to the connector I/O PCB and the PCI adapters. 13.
