The x3850 X6 and x3950 X6 server offerings now include new models with improved processing, building on an already-impressive suite of features and functions. All System x3850 X6 and System x3950 X6 servers incorporate the sixth generation of Enterprise X-Architecture (EXA) technology and deliver better, more efficient business results. The x3850 X6 supports up to 72 cores and 6 TB of memory to provide optimized performance and a fit for purpose modular design that gives these systems the flexibility to easily grow as business needs change. The System x3950 X6 can support up to 144 cores and 12 TB of memory. It offers 22 PCIe slots. 2 The Lenovo System x3850 X6 and System x3950 X6 incorporate the sixth generation of Enterprise X-Architecture (EXA) technology to help deliver better, more efficient business results. By enabling applications to perform notably faster, and increasing virtualization density, X6 can help decrease infrastructure costs and complexity. This enables you to design faster analytics engines, reign in IT sprawl, and deliver information with high reliability. Highlights: The X6 Books are modular components that provide the ability to add or modify the X6 platforms as technology or workloads change. X6 affords the ability to replace existing Compute Books in a chassis with next-generation Compute Books. Note: It is not possible to mix generations of Compute Books in the same chassis. The X6 servers also offer built-in Predictive Failure Analysis, so these systems take necessary proactive measures in order to avoid unscheduled downtime. X6 has a 'lid-less' rack design. There is no need to pull the server from the rack; front and rear access make serviceability fast and easy. X6 servers feature advanced RAS features such as Processor High Availability, Advanced Page Retire, Rolling Firmware Update Integration Module, and RAS Upward Integration Module. This enables a high level of x86 availability. Resilient X6 platforms maximize application uptime and promote easy integration into virtual environments. Features of the System x3850 X6: Intel Xeon E7-4800/8800 v3 product families deliver up to 3.2 GHz, up to 1866 MHz memory access, and 72 cores per server. This means outstanding compute performance. 4-Socket X6 systems support up to 6 TB using 96 x 64 GB LRDIMMs maximum memory capability to quickly scale to meet increased system demands. The 4-Socket system supports up to four NVMe drives for workloads that require low latency, high IOPs and, enterprise-class reliability and serviceability. X6 supports up to 12.8 TB of exflash memory-channel storage using 400 GB Flash DIMMs. Up to 11 total PCIe expansion slots (two front, nine rear) are available in an X6 system. This means that X6 has extremely high I/O bandwidth. X6 servers have the ability to support up to six x16 PCIe slots, delivering the capability to host advanced graphics and accelerator PCIe cards. Features of the System x3950 X6: 8-Socket X6 systems feature Intel Xeon E v3 product families delivering up to 3.2 GHz, and up to 1866 MHz memory access, with 144 cores per server. This means outstanding compute performance. x39050 X6 servers support a maximum memory capacity of up to 12 TB using 192 x 64 GB LRDIMMs to quickly scale to meet increased system demands. 8-Socket X6 servers support up to eight NVMe PCIe SSD drives for workloads that require low latency, high IOPs and enterprise-class reliability and serviceability. X6 servers support up to 12.8 TB of exflash memory-channel storage using 400 GB exflash DIMMs that leverage the memory-channel for the fastest response times. X6 monolithic 8U, 8-socket design delivers cable-free scalability for increased performance and higher reliability solutions and it also allows easier management. X6 has a primary management module (with a secondary IMM present). Up to 22 total PCIe expansion slots (four front, eighteen rear), provide extremely high I/O bandwidth from a single server in the System x portfolio. 3 8-Socket X6 servers provide the ability to support up to 12 x 16 PCIe slots and deliver the capability to host advanced graphics and accelerator PCIe cards. TRUDDR4 Memory reliability, performance and quality are crucial today. Customers utilize greater memory capacities for their Big Data Analytics, Cloud computing, Virtualization, Database and High Performance Computing workloads. The Lenovo TruDDR4 Memory portfolio improves the performance of all workloads; with more memory, many applications see immediate performance benefits. NVMe PCIe SSD The x3850 X6 and x3950 X6 feature a new flash storage option that utilizes PCIe 3.0 standard with the NVMe 1.0 specification. The NVMe PCIe SSD is engineered to bring data transfer and storage closer to the processor, eliminating latency and simplifying server-side storage architecture. 5 Intel host-bridge I/O controllers These Xeon processors use Intel Quick Path Interconnect busses for external operations. Each processor supports four independent busses to the memory, for a total of 64 Gbps of potential memory bandwidth per CPU. Features include: Up to 4 Intel Xeon E7-4800/8800 v3 family processors with up to 3.2 GHz, 1866 MHz memory access and 72 cores for the X3850 X6 and up to 8 Intel Xeon E v3 family processors for the x3950 X6 with up to 3.2 MHz memory and 144 cores. Up to 6 TB of internal memory utilizing 96 DIMM slots in the x3850 X6 and up to 12 TB of memory in the x3950 X6. A modular design comprised of Compute Books, I/O adapters, I/O Books, and Storage Books containing HDD/SDD that facilitates installation and removal of processors and memory. The innovative design means that the server is serviced from the front or the back, without the need for removal from the rack. Up to 22 PCIe slots in addition to two dedicated MezzLOM slots in the x3950 and up to 11 PCIe slots with one dedicated MezzLOM slot in the x3850 X6. Up to eight 2.5-inch HDDs and SDDs or up to sixteen 1.8-inch SDDs of internal storage in the x3850 X6 and up to sixteen 2.5-inch HDDs and SDDs or up to thirty-two 1.8-inch SDDs of internal storage in the x3950 X6. Up to four 900-watt or 1400-watt or four 750-watt, voltage-sensing rear access, hot-swap power supplies in the System x3850 X6 chassis. For the x3950 X6, the server holds up to eight 900-watt or 1400-watt power supplies or eight 750-watt DC power supplies. ECC DIMMs combined with an integrated, advanced ECC memory controller with Chipkill support to correct many single-bit, 2-bit, 3-bit and 4-bit memory errors to minimize disruption of service to LAN clients. Memory hardware scrubbing to correct many soft memory errors automatically without software intervention down time. Predictive Failure Analysis (PFA) on HDDs, SDDs, memory, processors, power supply, and fans to alert the system administrator of an imminent component failure. Standard IMM enabling diagnostic, reset, POST, and auto-recovery functions from remote locations and monitoring of temperature, voltage, and fan speed; alerts generated when thresholds are exceeded without utilizing an I/O slot. Information LED panel, diagnostics LED panel, and component LEDs for visual indications of system performance status. Light-path diagnostics to alert of potential problems without the need to remove the cover. This helps to reduce down time and service costs. CPU failure recovery in SMP configurations allows a failed processor to be forced offline, the server to be rebooted, an alert generated, and operations continued with the working processor. Automatic node failover for increased availability in dual-node configurations. High-availability and serviceability features Many enterprise on-demand environments run 24-hours a day, seven days a week to supply information around the world. These environments require ruggedly, dependable servers designed with features that can tolerate a component failure without total shutdown. 24 Compatibility The Lenovo System x3850 X6 and System x3950 X6 servers contain licensed system programs that include set configuration, set features, and test programs. Lenovo system BIOS is loaded from a "flash" EEPROM into system memory. This BIOS provides instructions and interfaces designed to support the standard features of the Lenovo System x3850 X6 and System x3950 X6 servers and to maintain compatibility with many current software programs. Memory The System x3850 X6 and System x3950 X6 servers are shipped with either 8 GB or 16 GB high-speed PC DDR3 ECC or PC DDR4 memory standard, supporting up to 12 TB (with 64 GB DIMM) of system memory per server in standard models. All supported system memory is addressable through direct memory access (DMA). This server supports 4 GB, 8 GB, 16 GB, 32 GB, and 64 GB DDR3 DIMMs and 8 GB, 16 GB, 32 GB and 64 GB DDR4 DIMMs. DDR3 DIMMs can only be installed in DDR3 compute books and DDR4 DIMMs can only be installed in DDR4 compute books. DDR3 DIMMs cannot be mixed with DDR4 DIMMs in the same server. Customer setup instructions are shipped with systems. Configuration information Internal storage The System x3850 X6 and System x3950 X6 servers supports 2.5-inch SSDs and HDDs and 1.8-inch SSDs. The associated drive backplanes are necessary to house the drives in the server. Some of the standard models include one empty 4 x 2.5- inch backplane. 25 SAS/SATA ports and provides RAID 0, RAID 1, and RAID 10. For additional RAID requirements, refer to the additional RAID options in ServerProven. Memory support Memory DIMMs should be plugged in and arranged in order of size. When plug order moves to new DIMM numbers, start with the compute book with the smallest total amount. Note: Refer to details on the ServerProven Plan for memory supported in System x3850 X6 and System x3950 X6. Refer to the Installation and Service Guide for rules on how to populate the memory. Visit PCIe adapter installations The System x3850 X6 and System x3950 X6 servers contain PCIe architecture and up to twenty-two PCIe I/O (up to twelve x16, with ten x8, or up to fourteen x8 with eight x16) sockets. Rack installations System x3850 X6 and System x3950 X6 4U, rack-drawer models are designed to be installed in a 19-inch rack cabinet designed for 26-inch deep devices, such as the NetBAY42 ER, NetBAY42 SR, NetBAY25 SR, or NetBAY11. If using a non-lenovo rack, the cabinet must meet the EIA-310-D standards with a depth of at least 71.1 cm (28 in.). Also, adequate space (approximately 5 cm (2 in.) for the front bezel and 2.5 cm (1 in.) for air flow) must be maintained from the slide assembly to the front door of the rack cabinet to allow sufficient space for the door to close and provide adequate air flow. Power considerations The Lenovo System x3850 X6 supports up to two 900-watt or four 1400-watt, voltage sensing power supplies and the x3950 X6 models support up to four 900-watt or eight 1400-watt, voltage sensing power supplies. All power supplies are rear access hot-swap power supplies in both the x3850 X6 and the x3950 X6 chassis. Installability The System x3850 X6 and System x3950 X6 server requires about 40 minutes for installation. Installation includes unpacking, setting up, and powering on the system. A set unattended boot mode allows the system keyboard to be locked to all entries except the password and at the same time allows other computers on the network to access the system disk drive. A selectable boot sequence can be used to prevent unauthorized installation of software or removal of data from the diskette drive. These servers are Winbond Trusted Platform Module V1.2, Trusted Computing Group (TCG) compliant. Limitations The System x3850 X6 and System x3950 X6 servers have no security intrusion detection; therefore, they should be installed in a rack environment that provides security through lockable doors or other security measures. It is a client's responsibility to ensure that the server is secure to protect sensitive data. The system supports integrity measurements. The TPM is TCG V1.2-compliant, and is ready for use with software purchased from third-party TPM Ecosystem partners in compliance with the TPM V1.2 specification. The customer is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communications facilities.
