To view detailed information about IBM and non-ibm devices, adapters, software, and network operating systems supported with xseries servers, visit: Limitations The xseries 380 servers support a maximum of 64 GB of system memory. The xseries 380 supports memory options using 256 MB, 512 MB, and 1 GB SDRAM RDIMMs. Memory must be added four DIMMS at a time. Microprocessor SMP upgrades must be of the same type, cache size, and clock speed. Mixing microprocessors of different speeds or cache sizes is not supported. Processor upgrades (10K3815 and 10K0050) are not customer installable. Installation of these options must be performed by IBM. Memory options (33L3258, 33L3260, 33J3262) announced in Hardware Announcement , dated May 31, 2001, are not customer installable. Installation of these options must be performed by IBM. Refer to the Software Requirements section for operating system limitations. Planning Information Customer Responsibilities: The xseries 380 is designated as customer setup. Customer setup instructions are shipped with systems and options. Processor and memory options are not customer installable. These options must be installed by IBM after initial installation. Configuration Information Internal SCSI Cabling Considerations The xseries 380 contains an LVDS backplane, supporting two hot-swap drive bays that support installation of up to two 3.5-inch, slim-high HDDs. The backplane is connected to the internal Wide Ultra3 SCSI controller through an LVD, 16-bit SCSI cable. The 24x IDE CD-ROM is cabled directly to the IDE port. RAID support for the internal hot-swap drive bays is supported by adding a supported RAID adapter. In this configuration, the 16-bit SCSI backplane cable is moved from the standard Ultra3 (LVD) SCSI controller to the RAID adapter. External Cabling Considerations The standard external Wide Ultra3 SCSI port uses an industry-standard,.8-mm very high density connector interface (VHDCI). This connector is supported by several cable options depending upon the devices requiring attachment and cable length desired

8 Rack Installations xseries 380 rack-drawer models are designed to be installed in a 28-inch deep, 19-inch rack cabinet such as the new NetBAY42 Enterprise Rack. For additional information about NetBAY racks, refer to Hardware Announcement , dated March 13, Cable Orders: A monitor, keyboard, and mouse must be attached for initial installation setup. In addition, appropriate cabling to support an optional network adapter is required to attach to the network. Installability: The xseries 380 requires about 30 minutes for installation.
