GSM-R: expanding the applications Giovanni Guidotti, Philippe Branly 1
GSM-R evolution GSM-R initially designed for voice and signalling traffic GSM-R: not a substitute for some products, but a powerful radio communication platform which supports evolutions in terms of technology and applications 2
GSM-R evolution: technology GSM based evolutions (e.g. GPRS for packet data transmission) Operational driven evolutions (e.g. Late Entry, OTDI) Better usage of radio channels New data based applications Safer operations Interoperability of networks and services 3
GSM-R evolution: applications Support of GSM-R communications is one of the factors which characterises railway infrastructures The number of available communication services denotes the quality of the network, as it permits to run applications 4
GSM-R evolution: applications WHICH APPLICATIONS? At UIC 2003 possible applications where presented Today some of them are being implemented, new ones are being defined A complete catalogue of available terminals enable the development of applications 5
Passenger information system train destinations, general passenger information detailed information on next stop (platform, connections, ) enquiry for special information (connecting trains, timing,...) local advertising (bus, hotels, ) WiFi, internet access Some applications can generate revenues, and are based on the integration of different radio communication platforms (WiFi, GSM-R, Satellite) 6
Passenger information system Staff terminals (GSM-R + WiFi with VoIP) On-board passenger information system Some of these issues have been addressed by TRAINCOM project 7
Video surveillance Radio connection to remote video cameras for controlling specific locations (stations, tunnels, level crossings, bridges) Train to ground extension of on-board video surveillance systems: GSM-R and WiFi when the train is in stations GSM-R when the train is running 8
Location dependant services Train location known by means of: Network info (e.g. serving cell) On train positioning systems (e.g. GPS) Ground base signalling systems Positioning information transmitted via GSM-R, periodically and/or following a request Local area Application Centres (ACs) manage all local info. ACs are connected to the application server 9
Location dependant services By connecting via intranet to the application server it is possible to localise locomotives, and in general retrieve the desired information: Trains running in a specific area Their actual position Timing of their stops at the stations Delays with respect to scheduling Additional info (e.g. derived from the diagnostic system) 10
Wireless mobile office Mainly based on integration of GSM-R and WiFi Eliminates paper as source of information, data, work orders Immediate connection to experts and offices, with exchange of all kind of information in full mobility Real time control of activities Access to the applications is independent of radio bearers (GSM-R/GPRS, WiFi) 11
Wayside and fixed systems Based on GSM-R terminals, also with solar cells and batteries Emergency towers & maintenance phones Exchange phones Remote connection of sensors and devices Public address Ticket vending machines 12
Radio in-fill via GSM-R Additional information via GSM-R Anticipate to the Train some signalling info, so that changes in the status of signals can lead to immediate actions Information can be sent continuously, using GSM-R CS and PS Management Center GSM-R 13
Conclusions GSM-R keeps its promises The GSM-R platform is available for all kinds of applications It s only a matter of new ideas and money 14
