All future Intel CPU designs will be multicore...(r.merritt, EETimes September 13, 2004) Shoot-out At the Multicore Corral Dual-core processors have been on Intel and AMD's "to do" list for a while.. Although a dual-core chip won't run at twice the speed of a single core chip, it's expected to be roughly 1.5 times as fast..(m.brownstein, Networking Magazine Sept 24, 2004 Multicore, dual-core, and the future of Intel "they (Intel) expect to move most of their product line to multicore chips in the next few years." 13 Everything s Rosy? Well Apparently not. In 2004 the US Council on Competitiveness (along with DARPA) funded a study into ISVs to better understand the current situation of ISV software for technical servers. Their code, investment and application usage in Industry 69 different Suppliers/Companies in 10 countries Slide 13 * Source: COC/DARPA study.
14 HPC codes in Industry* Slide 14 In practice scaling is still limited With 24% scaling to only 1 processor And only 59% scale to 16-way or less 71% of the codes in the study were developed in-house by the ISV 12% university, and 5% national lab 78% of the codes have had a light refresh within the last year, 5% not for over 5 years Not major rewrites * Source: COC/DARPA study.
15 What needs to be done? Multi-Core means multi-threads threads Not just for HPC workloads End of the decade will see a minimum of 32 threads in a typical 4S server Majority will NOT be HPC workloads Invest in scale out With h/w no-longer the main differentiator then algorithms and code will be (already are) Infinity number of monkeys, infinite number of typewriters; will generate the entire works of.
