4 Industry Momentum to Multicore Processing Multicore MPUs go mainstream Otellini (Intel) predicted that by the end of 2006, 40 percent of Intel's desktop, 70 percent of its notebook and 85 percent of its server CPUs will be multicore devices. 13 Everything s Rosy? Well Apparently not. In 2004 the US Council on Competitiveness (along with DARPA) funded a study into ISVs to better understand the current situation of ISV software for technical servers. 15 What needs to be done? Multi-Core means multi-threads threads Not just for HPC workloads End of the decade will see a minimum of 32 threads in a typical 4S server Majority will NOT be HPC workloads Invest in scale out With h/w no-longer the main differentiator then algorithms and code will be (already are) Infinity number of monkeys, infinite number of typewriters; will generate the entire works of.
