1.0 Getting Started Trimline Timer Owners Manual Thank you for your confidence in AMERICAN LED-gible. You have selected one of the best-built, high-quality, precision-engineered products available today. Our products are designed to give you years of trouble-free enjoyment. We appreciate your support, and we will do everything we can to keep you happy with your purchase for many years to come. After all, you are the reason we are in business! 1.1 Product Description The Trimline series L.E.D. numeric marquees, are our most cost effective numeric marquees. Trimline series marquees are available with 2.3 or 4.0" tall L.E.D. modules. 2.3" tall L.E.D. modules provide data visibility up to 125 feet away. 4.0" tall L.E.D. modules provide data visibility up to 200 feet away. Trimline series marquees use latched L.E.D. modules instead of multiplexed L.E.D. modules resulting in a brighter and more consistent display. Basic units are constructed using high efficiency red L.E.D. modules, however optional green or amber L.E.D. modules are available. Optional high-brightness red L.E.D. modules are also available for applications with high ambient lighting conditions. Basic single sided NEMA-1 units are housed in a painted steel enclosure designed to be bolted to the wall. Screw terminals are provided within the enclosure for connection of 120VAC power, 120VAC or 24VDC Start/Stop/Reset inputs and RS-232/RS-485 serial communications. For harsher environments, Trimline marquees are housed in a rugged NEMA-12 enclosure constructed from painted 16 gauge steel with a ¼" acrylic lens. NEMA-12 units are suitable for use in most industrial and factory environments. NEMA-12 enclosures can optionally be upgraded to NEMA-4 specifications. Optional stainless steel enclosures are also available for food processing applications. The Trimline Timer with Light Block is designed to be a versatile solution for most manual production timing applications. The timer can easily be configured to time up, or down. The timer can automatically reset and start timing again, or halt until a button is pressed. The associated light block can illuminate green, amber, and red over user configurable time spans. 6 1.2 Unpacking the Unit Every Trimline timer is carefully tested, both mechanically and electrically, before shipment. Inspect the timer for damage, which may have occurred in transit. If there is evidence of damage or the timer fails to operate, file a claim with the shipper and notify American LED-gible. Save the shipping materials for inspection. Carefully remove the timer from the shipping carton. Then mount, or set the timer in a location where the unit is readily visible. 1.3 The Trimline Timer Circuit Board Take a few moments to become familiar with the Trimline timer circuit board. There are two versions of the board, one with 2.3" tall digits, and one with 4.0" tall digits. Both versions of the circuit board may be shortened from six digits to four digits by cutting off the two most significant digits of the display. Both boards have eight indicator lamps that can be quite helpful when troubleshooting problems:l1 lights when the start input is asserted, L2 lights when the stop input is asserted, L3 lights when the reset input is asserted, L4 lights when the n/c input is asserted, L5 lights when the RS-485 transmitter is on; L6 lights when the board is transmitting serial data; L7 lights when the board is receiving serial data; and L8 lights when power is applied to the board. 9 1.4 Power Installation Trimline Timer Owners Manual Bring the power and serial communications wiring to the timer separately through conduit, to avoid noise problems. Power wires should be American Wire Gauge #16 with a 600 volt insulation rating. Standard timers are shipped without external connections in the enclosure. Power wiring is terminated within the unit on screw terminals appropriate for 16AWG wire. Typical power wiring to the timer is shown below. Typical Power Wiring Typical RS-232 Wiring 2 RXD 3 TXD 5 GND NEUT HOT EARTH SWITCH SWITCH 1) 120VAC NEUT 2) 120VAC HOT 3) EARTH 4) POWER SWITCH 5) POWER SWITCH 6) START 7) STOP 8) RESET 9) n/c 10) INPUT COMMON 1) RS-232 OUT 2) RS-232 IN 3) RS-232 GND 4) RS-485-5) RS ) RS-485 GND Connect 120VAC Neutral to pin 1, 120 VAC Hot to pin 2, and Earth Ground to pin 3. A switch suitable for 120VAC power may be connected across pins 4 and 5 to control 120VAC power to the timer. Otherwise pins 4 and 5 of the power connector must be jumpered or the timer will fail to operate. Maximum power draw is 30W per display side. Page 5

1.5 Logic Input Wiring The start, stop, and reset logic inputs are designed to be connected to momentary normally open push button switches. Pushing the start button makes the timer begin timing. Pressing the stop button makes the timer stop timing. Pressing the reset button resets the timer and optionally stops or starts timing. The logic inputs are optically isolated and passive in nature as shown is the schematic below. To assert any input, apply a voltage between logic common and the desired input terminal. 120VAC logic levels are selected by removing all four shorting jumpers from the option header. 24VDC logic levels are selected by installing all four shorting jumpers in the option header as shown below. 120VAC Logic Jumpers Removed VDC Logic Jumpers Installed Page 6

1.6 Serial Communications Installation Later in this manual, we will describe the process of using a PC to configure one or more timers using the free PD configuration tool supplied with the timer. Using this tool, the timer will be configured to time up or down, and illuminate the light block various colors at specified times. In order to use the configuration tool, the PC serial port will have to be connected to a single timer or an RS-485 network of timers. The wiring may be temporary, or permanent. The advantage to permanent wiring is that it makes future configuration changes to the timer easier. Timer configuration is stored in super-capacitor backed ram and will be retained for a minimum of two weeks without 120VAC power applied to the unit. For a single timer within 50 feet of the PC, RS-232 is preferable to RS-485. RS-232 is simpler, and RS-232 serial ports are very common on computers and industrial control systems. RS-485 is more complex, and RS-485 serial ports are far less common. An external RS-232 to RS-485 communications converter may be required. However, there are situations where using RS-485 for communication is justified. RS-485 can be used to communicate with a timer up to 4000 feet away. Additionally RS-485 allows you to construct a network of up to 63 timers. ALI suggests using Belden 9463 "Blue Hose" cable for both RS-232 and RS-485 serial communications wiring. To configure the Timer for RS-232 communications, insert a shorting jumper in the RS-232 OUT position, a shorting jumper in the RS-232 IN position, and turn SW1 Switch 8 ON. To use RS-485 communications, insert a shorting jumper in the 485- position, a shorting jumper in the 485+ position, and turn SW1 Switch 8 OFF. Note some dip switches label the OFF position as OPEN. 13 Communications wiring is terminated within the unit on screw terminals appropriate for American Wire Gauge #16 wire. Typically the screw terminals on the timer board are used, however in some custom units, ALI may provide serial communications termination on DIN rail barriers or Cinch screw terminals as appropriate for the individual unit. 14 1.7 Notes on RS-485 Multi-drop Wiring Up to 63 timers can be connected to a single PC serial port using RS-485 as long as the RS-485 cable does not exceed 4000 feet in length. In RS-485 multi-drop, all RS-485+ terminals are connected in parallel and all RS-485- terminals are connected in parallel. Some devices label the RS-485 signals as B and A instead of + and -. Connect B terminals to RS-485+ and A terminals to RS Grounds must be connected between units. If an external RS-232 to RS-485 converter is required, then ALI suggests purchasing a 485TBLED converter from B&B Electronics. This is the converter that we use for testing the timer at the factory. The Model 485TBLED converter may be purchased directly from B&B Electronics by calling We suggest operating the 485TBLED with ECHO in the ON position and RS-485 transmitter CONTROL in the SD position as illustrated below. 15 1.8 Light Block Wiring Trimline Timer Owners Manual The timer board has two mechanical relays that are used to control the LED Light Block. Relay-A closes to illuminate the red LEDs. Relay-B closes to illuminate the green LEDs. When both the red and the green LEDs are illuminated at the same time, they mix to form amber. The relay to light block wiring is factory installed. It is covered here merely for completeness. AB GRN WHT RED BLK BLK RED 120VAC HOT 120VAC NEUT Typical Relay Wiring to 120VAC Light Block Page 11

1.9 Setting the Timer Address Addressing is an important aspect of operating Trimline timers. Addressing is a method where more than one timer can be connected to a serial data line and commands can be directed to a particular unit for action. Addressing is accomplished by assigning a unique ASCII character address to each unit. ASCII characters SPACE (20h) through TILDE (7Eh) are valid for addressing. Selecting an invalid address character results in an effective address of 'A' (41h). The address of the timer is set by switches 1 through 7 on SW1. Switch 1 sets the least significant bit of the address character, and switch 7 sets the most significant bit of the address character. Setting a switch to the ON position sets a logic 1. Setting a switch to the OFF or OPEN position sets a logic 0. For example, to assign an address of D (44h) to a timer, turn ON switches 3 and 7. Leave switches 1, 2, 4, 5, and 6 in the OFF or OPEN position OPEN OPEN MSD LSD 40h 20h 10h 08h 04h 02h 01h Address Character ON OFF OFF OFF OFF OFF ON A (41h) ON OFF OFF OFF OFF ON OFF B (42h) ON OFF OFF OFF OFF ON ON C (43h) ON OFF OFF OFF ON OFF OFF D (44h) ON OFF OFF OFF ON OFF ON E (45h) Note: A complete ASCII chart is provided in the rear of this manual, which shows the mapping between characters and hexadecimal / decimal code numbers Setting the Timer Baud Rate The timer firmware is hard coded to communicate at baud, eight data bits, no parity, one stop bit. Even though a baud rate table is printed on the circuit board, the timer firmware does not obey this setting and always operates at baud. Page 12

2.0 Using the Timer Configuration Tool The timer is configured using a small PC utility program. Using the program, the timer configuration is programmed over an RS-232 or RS-485 communications link. See the proceeding sections covering installation and wiring for information on how to wire and configure the serial port for RS-232, or RS-485 communications. The following sections cover installing and using the timer configuration tool to configure the timer. 2.1 Installing the Configuration Tool Please close all running programs, then insert the supplied PD CD. Bring up a directory of the CD, and then double click on SETUP. Follow the directions given on the screen to install the tool. Page 13

2.2 Establishing a Link with the Timer After installing the timer configuration tool, start it by clicking on start, program, timer configuration tool, timer configuration tool as shown below. Page 14

First select the serial port used to communicate with the timer. For most PCs this will usually be COM1: or COM2:. Next select the address of the timer the configuration tool should communicate with. Typically the factory sets the timer address to A (41h) before shipment. If the configuration tool cannot open the serial port, as shown below, it probably means that the selected serial port is not present in the computer, or is already being used by some other software running on the computer. Note the icon on the right side of the screen that indicates a communications problem exists. Page 15

If the configuration tool can open the serial port, but cannot establish communications with the timer, as shown below, check port/address settings and wiring. Note the icon on the right side of the screen that indicates a communications problem exists. The selected serial port is present in the computer and available for use, but it may not be the serial port that is actually connected to the timer. Try other serial port settings, especially COM1: and COM2:. The address selected may not match the address assigned to the timer using SW1 on the timer circuit board. Review the sections on setting the timer address. Typically the factory sets the timer address to A (41h) before shipment. Directions on how to change the address assigned to the timer can be found on page 12 of this manual. If you are using RS-485 to communicate with a network of timers, this problem can be caused by having more than one timer at the same address. The wiring between the serial port and the timer may be incorrect. Review the section covering communications wiring starting on page 8. Page 16

When communications with a timer is successfully established, the screen will look like the picture shown below. Note the icon on the right side of the communications status that indicates that the communications link is working. Page 17

2.3 Configuring Timing Behavior After establishing communications with the timer, click on the timing configuration tab to set timing behavior such as up or down timing. First select the timing direction, up or down. Up timers begin timing from 0 hours, 0 minutes, and 0 seconds and time up to the time limit. Down timers begin timing from the time limit and time down to 0 hours, 0 minutes, and 0 seconds Next select what the timer should do when it has ran out. Down timers run out when they reach zero. Up timers run out when they reach the time limit. The timer can be configured to stop timing or to automatically reset itself. Next select what the timer should do after it is reset. The timer can be configured to reset and neither start nor stop timing, reset and automatically start timing, or to reset and automatically stop timing. Note: This setting affects both auto reset, and the operator pressing the reset button. Finally select the time limit for the timer. Down timers reset to the entered time limit and time down to zero. Up timers reset to zero and time up to the entered time limit. After answering the timing configuration questions, click on the save timing configuration to timer button to program the entered timing configuration into the timer. Page 18

2.4 Configuring Light Block Behavior Click on the light block configuration tab to set light block behavior. Trimline Timer Owners Manual The light block can be programmed to illuminate Red, Amber, and Green. Use the from and to fields to enter the range of time over which the light block should illuminate for each color. If you do not want the light block to illuminate a particular color, set both the from and to field to 0 hours, 0 minutes, and 0 seconds to disable that color. Note: The from and to times for each color can be specified in either order. From 0 Hrs 0 Min 0 Sec to 1Hrs 1 Min 1 Sec is the same as from 1 Hrs 1 Min 1Sec to 0 Hrs 0 Min 0 Sec. If the color ranges overlap, red overrides amber, and amber overrides green. After setting the time ranges for each color, click on the save light block configuration to timer button to program the entered light block color range settings into the timer. Page 19

2.5 Testing the Timer Click the test timer tab to test the programmed timer configuration. After the timing configuration, and the light block configuration have been programmed into the timer, the test timer tab can be used to test the timer configuration. The graphic on the left side of the screen updates in real time based upon data retrieved from the timer and represents what the timer is displaying right now. To the right is a remote control that can be used to activate the timer's start, stop and reset inputs. Also the remote control can be used to override the currently accumulated time. Enter a new time and then click the override time button to force the timer to that value. Use the timer remote control to verify that the timer exhibits the desired behavior. You can use the time override feature of the remote to advance or retard the time to any critical value. For instance, the timer could be advanced to a few seconds before the time at which the light block should transition from amber to red. If the timer behavior is incorrect, click on the timing configuration and light block configuration tabs to go back and adjust the configuration until the desired behavior is achieved. Once the timer configuration is verified to be correct, you can close the timer configuration tool. The timer will continue to work autonomously. Time configuration is guaranteed to be retained for two weeks without power. If the timer does not have power for more than two weeks, it may be necessary to reprogram the timer the next time it is used. Page 20

3.0 Timer Configuration Example Trimline Timer Owners Manual In our example, the timer is being used to time a manual process that should take less than one hour and forty five minutes. The operator will use a single push button to reset the timer when the process is started. The timer will reset to 1 hour 45 minutes and time down to zero and then stop. The light block will illuminate green for the first 1 hour and 30 minutes, then amber for the next 10 minutes, and then red for the last five minutes. If the operator takes more than the allowed 1 hour and 45 minutes, the timer will hold at zero and the light block will remain red. If the operator finishes the process early, they will press the reset button to restart the timer at 1 hour and 45 minutes and begin working on the next piece. If the operator goes on break, pressing the stop button will pause the timer. When they return from break, pressing the start button will make the timer resume timing down. First establish communications with the timer, and then setup the timing configuration as follows: Configure the unit to time down. Next configure the unit to stop timing after running out. Set the unit to automatically start timing after reset. Set the time limit to 1 hour 45 minutes and 0 seconds. Click the save timing configuration to timer button. Page 21

Now we need to setup the time ranges for the light block. We want the light block to illuminate green from 1 hour 45 minutes down to 15 minutes. Next we want the light block to illuminate amber from 15 minutes down to 5 minutes. Finally we want the light block to illuminate red from 5 minutes down to zero. Note the above time ranges overlap by one second, but this is acceptable and makes configuring the time ranges easier. At 15 minutes 0 seconds the light block will illuminate amber because amber overrides green. Also at 5 minutes 0 seconds the light block will illuminate red because red overrides amber. Enter the configuration as shown in the picture above, and then click the save light block configuration to timer button. Page 22

The next step is to test the timer configuration. Use the remote control to stop the timer. Next use the remote control to reset the timer. Verify that the timer resets to 1 hour 45 minutes, starts timing down, and the light block illuminates green. Next use the remote control to force the timer to 16 minutes. The timer will continue to time down. When the timer reaches 15 minutes, verify that the light block switches from green to amber. Next use the remote control to force the timer to 6 minutes. The timer will continue to time down. When the timer reaches 5 minutes, verify that the light block switches from amber to red. Finally use the remote control to force the timer to 1 minute. The timer will continue to time down. When the timer reaches zero, verify that the light block remains red and that the timer stops timing. If all of the above works, then the timer configuration is verified to be correct! You can now use the timer autonomously and the configuration tool is no longer needed. Page 23

4.0 In Case of Difficulties Before contacting ALI for technical support, please review the manual sections covering installation and operation. If the timer does not power up, check indicator lamp L8 (PWR). This L.E.D. is connected directly to the timer power supply. If L8 does not light the 120VAC power wiring is probably incorrect. If the timer powers up properly, but the timer's serial port appears to not work, first check all serial port wiring, jumper selections, and dip-switch settings. There are several indicator lamps on the timer circuit board to help troubleshoot serial communications problems. L5 (ENB) L6 (TXD) L7 (RXD) - Lights when the RS-485 transmitter is on. (Only during RS-485 communications) - Lights when the timer is transmitting serial data. - Lights when the timer is receiving serial data. The above L.E.D. s should flash during serial communications. They only light during the transmission or reception of a character. When the serial data line is idle, all three L.E.D. s should remain off. The flash is very short and some people describe it as flickering. If RS-485 communications are being used, and L7 (RXD) remains on even though the serial data line is idle, the 485+ and 485- wires are probably reversed. TJ1, the self-test jumper can be installed to check the L.E.D. display. While TJ1 is installed, the timer will execute power on self tests repeatedly. This feature is used by the factory to exercise the L.E.D. display during the 24 hour burn in period. After the timer has burned in, the unit is then fully tested before shipment. 4.1 Contacting American LED-gible Inc.
