5 RG 4-iber System Overview 4-iber Trunking Solutions Introduction Bandwidth and storage demand is expanding at a breathtaking rate. The environment is rapidly evolving. The impact on data center design and management is profound. Networks will migrate from 10 to 40 to 100 Gigabit/second Ethernet speeds dynamically, and data center managers and designers need to be able to manage this migration to maximize efficiency and responsiveness while minimizing cost. This dynamic migration demands a simple yet robust migration pathway, and successful migration starts with a simple yet robust plan. This guide presents just such a concise and manageable plan to allow migration of infrastructure, whether it be core switching, aggregation, end of row, top of rack or hybrid network architectures. Centered around 4-fiber trunks and optical connectivity, this roadmap provides the following advantages: A single trunking format that can be replicated and upgraded simply and flexibly Unified solutions for 10, 40 and 100 GbE applications Pre-engineered paths and polarity Higher fiber utilization versus 1 fiber systems ewer trunks ewer connections ewer components Standardized practices for design, installation, documentation and troubleshooting Component and trunk re-use inimized waste of space, time and money The following pages provide this plan -- designs and products for each step of your network s evolution to 100 GbE, allowing your data center strategy to become a dynamic business advantage. 10G LC Duplex Patch 4 iber Trunk 1 x iber LC Duplex Patch 40G 3 x 1 iber Patch Cable 4 iber Trunk 3 x 1 iber Patch Cable 100G 1 x 4 iber Patch Cable 4 iber Trunk 1 x 4 iber Patch Cable Page ax: AE 1/13

6 RG 4-iber 10 Gigabit Interconnect Introduction 10 GbE Interconnect The 10 Gigabit Interconnect Solution, like all of the planned migration designs, employs a 4-fiber optical trunk with a single PO-type connector at each end. A trunk interfaces with the rear of a 4-fiber RG cassette that breaks out the trunk fibers into twelve duplex LC connections at the front, supporting 4 fibers per cassette. This cassette resides in a time-proven RG chassis which provides cable management and protection for both the POs at the rear and LC cords at the front. RG enclosures are stackable and available in 1,, and 4 RU versions and support up to 36 duplex LCs (7 fibers) per rack unit. They can be populated all at once, or added to or upgraded a cassette at a time in the future. The RG enclosure also supports high density 10 Gigabit cassettes, as well as 40 and 100 GbE versions, allowing an upgrade path by changing the cassette at the front and using existing and additional 4-fiber trunks at the rear. 3 4-iber PO Trunk A-Polarity (Type 4-iber 4 4-iber L L L L L L L L L L L L 1 LC-Duplex A-B Patch 1 LC-Duplex A-B Patch LC-PO 4-iber Trunk RG 1 RU Chassis RG RU Chassis RG 4 RU Chassis Page ax: AE 1/13

8 RG 4-iber HD 10 Gigabit Interconnect Introduction RG High Density 10 Gigabit iber s also utilize 4-fiber PO trunks and support connection from 40 Gigabit switch ports that have been remotely enabled as four 10 Gigabit independent paths. PO based QSP ports at the switch interface with a cassette at one end of the trunk, and a break-out cassette divides these signals into duplex LC pairs at the other end. HD 10 GbE Interconnect PO cassettes have two 4-fiber PO connectors at the rear and six 8-fiber POs at the front. Each cassette supports distribution of six 40 Gigabit Ethernet paths, each containing four duplex 10 Gigabit links. These cassettes are connected via standard 4-fiber PO trunks to a pair of two x1 LC duplex cassettes at the other end of the trunk. This pair of cassettes maintains fiber paths and polarity and provides proper fiber mapping from transmit at one end to receive at the other over a total of twenty-four 10 Gigabit paths. All cassettes are compatible with RG chassis, frames and hardware, and feature a simple, yet highly effective, cable management system. s are 1/ RU high and snap easily into existing or newly installed RG chassis, and can be replaced by 40 and 100 GbE cassettes in the future. 3 4-iber 4-iber PO Trunk A-Polarity (Type A) 4 4-iber L L L L L L iber PO Patch Cord A-Polarity (Type A) -iber LC A-B Patch Cord LC-PO PO 4-iber Trunk RG 1 RU Chassis RG RU Chassis RG 4 RU Chassis Page ax: AE 1/13
