Michalopoulos Associate Professor of Computer Sciences California State University at Fullerton NEW PRODUCTS Digital Introduces Super-8, Newest PDP-8 Minicomputer A parallel processor version of the PDP-8/A that performs fixed and floating point computations with up to 17 digit accuracy has been announced by Digital Equipment Corporation. Called the Super-8, the new minicomputer incorporates a second processor to perform all fixed and floating point arithmetic operations in hardware. The Super-8 continues to use the conventional PDP-8/A processor for other functions, such as input-output operations and system management. system is designed utilizing LSI logic circuitry, providing significant advantages in speed, size, and reliability. Other features include 100% air cooling, standard high-speed multiply, and standard 16K buffer. A "pipelined" machine, the 470V/6 can have up to six separate instructions in.execution at any one time. The Super-8 was designed for OEMs and end users who need fast FORTRAN IV, floating point, and extended-precision arithmetic at reasonable cost It performs calculations at much faster rates than previous PDP-8 models. Sample instruction times include 10.5 microsecond fixed-point add, 30 microsecond floating-point add, and 37.5 microsecond floating-point multiply. It is completely compatible with previous models of the PDP-8 family. The Super-8 operates with three data formats: 24-bit fixed point, 24-bit floatingpoint with 12-bit exponent (36 bits), and 60-bit floating point with 12-bit exponent (72 bits) for extended precision arithmetic. It can run ANSI-compatible FORTRAN IV under Digital's OS/8 operating system. Priced from $5,995 including 8K words of core, the Super-8 is scheduled for delivery in early April Reader Service Number 1275 Reader Service Number 1278 The Amdahl 470V/6 general-purpose business computer is functionally compatible with software and peripheral equipment used in IBM systems. Internal speed, according to the manufacturer, is approximately 100% above the IBM 370/168 system that it is designed to replace. Amdahl Corp. Delivers First 470V/6 Computers Amdahl Corporation has delivered three of its $3.7 to $6.0 million 470V/6 large-scale computers and expects to deliver three more before the end of the year. In all installations to date (Texas A&M University, Columbia University, and the University of Michigan), the computer replaced one or more IBM systems. The company states that the 470V/6 can be substituted for an IBM 370 or 360 being used to run any set of programs and using any peripheral mix. No more changes are required than would be to change from one model of the 370 to another. According to Amdahl, the 470V/6 literally plugs into the customer's peripheral equipment and runs his existing programs without significant change. It has an internal speed some 100% better than an IBM 370/168 and significantly greater capacity, yet it requires two-thirds less floor space, the Palo Alto-based firm claims. The Amdahl 470V/6 has a machine cycle time of 32.5 nanoseconds and a standard capacity of 16 channels in any combination of byte, block, or selector channels.
