3 Policy aims and expectations European Digital Single Market (DSM) highlights importance of standards Key technologies: Clouds, IoT, 5G, Cybersecurity, Big Data 5G as integrated Enabler of Digitisation of the economy Massive Mobile Broadband, Massive Machine Type Communication and Ultra reliable and low latency communication will happen We need spectrum and regulation that work for 5G We need vertical sectors that work together and the skills for people to work with 5G 3

5 Evolved Mobile Broadband 5G is not just about adding new capacity but embb is a part of it Big majority of base stations have wireless backhaul (excl. Asia),. New biiger bands needed for 5G, so higher frequencies Object based (OB cloud) replacing traditional/linear broadcasting: meta data about how media objects should be assembled on variety of devices Better bits (QoS) not just higher peak bit rate, systems designed to work with 5G Multiple radio technologies/network slices collaborating as one system Not much new spectrum below 24GHz, but various bands on regional and global levels above that Different or flexible use of cells in future, different architectures, but not all by 2020 A need to cope with different and conflicting demands at the same time Use of below 6GHz for normal communications, above for heavy use and below 1GHz for longer range, rural etc The current system continues to evolve and provide increased capacity. Challenges of spectrum, energy use, quality of service and what pays 5

7 Massive Machine to Machine (M2M) Is the 50 billion devices by 2020 a myth? Need connectivity. Mobile edge & fog computing can help to reduce latency Big data, energy efficiency, low cost, long range, short range, real time, scalable data. Difficult to get them all together. Different sectors need different things IoT challenges = IoT opportunities: spectrum, coverage, latency, security, privacy, legacy equipment, broadband?, large number of devices, sensors, actuators, data quantity/content/quality/analytics Omnipresent communications causing high interference Governments/regulations/standards/changeover of equipment not able to keep up together Car to car uses purpose designed standards in a license exempt band. Already here. Do we need 5G for it? Need purposed security, eg no MAC address so no tracking in car to car Utility sectors, ehealth, other verticals have very different Are we running too fast with IoT? It is necessary to take steps that work All things work together no electricity => no communication => no IoT 7

9 ULTRA RELIABLE AND LOW LATENCY NETWORKS 5G: New verticals are essential to generate new revenues for Telcos use case: connected Industry ( Industry 4.0 ), remote healthcare and automotive (autonomous driving cars) Value Added Applications with low latency, high reliability and high availability Industrie 4.0 links with mobile edge computing, 5G, and connected world concepts to deliver services that can be used Tactile Internet: Design a highly responsive & adaptive mobile network able to deliver remote physical experiences globally. It needs network concepts that are designed for it Real time control of the car : is a split between driver and car and needs to be defined 5G needs to be extendable as we learn through experience We need to deliver to a cost, can new concepts help us keep the cost down? Can we deliver at volume? What mix of new concepts is needed? Security a mixture of network and around individual messages 9
