2 Background Objective: Support for Internet-of-Things (IoT) in next-generation networks Wearable electronics, smart meters, sensors Need for radio access enabling massive machine-to-machine (M2M) connections Existing solutions: LoRa: Narrow band (NB) FDMA + chirp spread spectrum SIGFOX: Ultra NB (UNB) FDMA Both on unlicensed frequencies new network and hardware deployment LTE-M M2M devices differ from handheld devices and among themselves in Device constraints Traffic patterns and quality-of-service (QoS) requirements Page 2

3 Motivation for MOMA Lack of support for multi-class devices/services: Beyond low-energy, low-data-rate devices There will be multiple classes of IoT services in addition to the mobile-broadband/iot divide Inefficiency in resource utilization Orthogonal MA available BW in NB cellular IoT solutions is underused Limited resource management flexibility Only 1 parameter to control broadband/iot resource planning (the BW) This parameter is fixed in advance in most existing solutions Page 3

4 Multi-Service Oriented Multiple Access (MOMA) MOMA: integrating both traditional broadband users and massive machine-to-machine (M2M) connections by establishing separate classes of users and/or services Class dependent hierarchical spreading of the data signal a mix of multiuser and single-user detection at the BS Page 4

5 Multi-Service Oriented Multiple Access (MOMA) What we mean by a class of devices/services: Class: A group of users with the same QoS profile and user density User: a device or a specific service running on a device Example: a smart watch monitoring health and a social texting app running on a smartphone could in principle belong to the same class Example of a system with classes A class requiring a data rate as high as possible for a relatively small number of users classes of decreasing target rates each requiring to accommodate as many users as possible Page 5

For any fixed number of antennas, the limiting performance of the -spread system with the MMSE receiver as with is the same as that for a system with a single antenna, having processing gain and with the received power of each user the sum of the received powers at the individual antennas.
