1 WIRELESS TRENDS IN HEALTHCARE EXECUTIVE SUMMARY 2011 Trends Survey

2 Input from Healthcare Professionals In January of 2011, NetMotion Wireless conducted a blind survey with 237 healthcare professionals and HIMSS members. The participants represented organizations of all sizes and yielded insight into mobile technology and wireless trends within the industry. The Pervasiveness of Wireless in Healthcare Over 97% of the respondent organizations used wireless and wireless data applications in their daily operation. Virtually every one of the respondent s organizations used wireless data applications. And of those using wireless data applications, roughly 85% are doctors and nurses. Therapists Paramedics/EMTs Other Clincial Staff Operations Staff Staff that work from home Other (please specify) Importance for Mobile Clinicians With 67% of the respondents indicating that their wireless solutions were Very Important Must Have, for both their mobile clinicians and their overall enterprise mobility initiatives, and another 26% indicating that their wireless solutions were Important Makes a Significant Contribution, it s clear that wireless has come to stay for clinicians in all types of organizations. Concerns About Wireless Usage The key concerns around wireless healthcare that most organizations shared were: Security Issues with Wi-Fi transmission Employee frustration with less-than-seamless wireless applications Questions in the survey lead us to a prioritized understanding of what organizations see as key concerns in deploying wireless initiatives. Key Benefits Participants were asked to note the key benefits of wireless. The clear leaders in this category were: Employee Satisfaction: 67% of responding participants indicated an increase in employee satisfaction given new wireless capabilities. Improved Patient Outcomes: Over a third of responding participants indicated they d seen improved patient outcomes that they could tie directly to their wireless initiatives. 2

3 Productivity Increases: 67% of responding participants said they had seen productivity increases. To get a better understanding of this response, we also asked participants to estimate a percentage of productivity increases. Approximately 70% of respondents were able to provide the specific percentage range in which they realized the increases, with the top two responses indicating an increase of 5-20% (38%) and 25-40% (29%). 24.1% 13.2% 62.7% Yes - we've seen an increase in productivity No - no significant change in productivity Don't know Future Wireless Initiatives Almost all participating organizations indicated growth in usage and adaptation of wireless deployments in their operations in the next year. Some of these findings include: New Mobile Applications: Organizations are planning to make more applications available to mobile devices. These include Electronic Health Records (44.4%), CPOE (42.1%), Physician clinical POC (34.3%) and Nursing clinical POC (32.9%) New Wireless Devices: Besides laptops, other new devices added include tablets (51.4%), smartphones (39.8%), and handhelds (28.7%) New Mobile Staff: Most organizations are still unclear as to how many mobile workers will be added, indicating Don t Know (27.8%), while other responses ( new adds and new adds) combined for almost 40% Other Observations This is an informal survey, yet the data it reveals is telling. The respondents answers clearly indicate significant growth of mobile deployments and enterprise mobile initiatives. In addition, these initiatives have had a strong positive effect, not only on patient care and productivity, but on employee morale, with nearly 70% of respondents indicating employee morale as an overall benefit increase. These initiatives have had a strong positive effect on patient care and productivity, as well as employee morale. Most respondents also indicated that one of the key benefits they received was an improvement in staff and clinician efficiency. This indicates a possible connection between the desired benefit of efficiency and the two realized benefits of employee satisfaction and productivity increases. 3

4 Conclusions Managing issues of security and the issue of frequent disconnects particularly in older buildings with limited infrastructure or across a distributed campus is going to be key to enabling organizations to use wireless in an even broader, more widespread fashion to increase productivity, improve patient outcomes, and improve employee satisfaction. There are technologies that offer great promise in these areas, as well as offer a seamless, secure wireless experience that will: Free clinicians from worrying about security, and general technical issues with their support technology. This will help enable them to focus on providing the best possible patient care.
