27 The Newest New Thing Pen & Paper: E Ink from Lucent E Ink and Lucent Technologies have made a crude prototype of electronic paper. THE INK consists of tiny spheres, which are filled with electrically charged white particles suspended in a light oil. THE WHITE PARTICLES are oriented within each sphere by an electrostatic charge. THE CIRCUITRY underlying the capsules controls whether the spheres appear as white or black pixels. E-PAPER is made of the electronic ink and the addressing circuitry, which can be fabricated on a thin, flexible plastic substrate. The result is a display that is as thin and bendable as a sheet of paper.
