1 PowerQUICC Processors Simplify Deterministic Industrial Networks Overview The Internet has changed the way we live, communicate and run our businesses. This enhanced connectivity is revolutionizing how embedded industrial machines autonomously exchange information via simple, low-cost, commercial off-theshelf (COTS) equipment running standard protocols to operate with increased capacity, better management and greater efficiency. Industrial network protocols such as EtherNet/IP, ETHERNET Powerlink, IEEE 1588, PROFINET and PROFIBUS provide deterministic, reliable network operation in harsh environments such as industrial manufacturing, power systems, health care facilities and transportation systems. Freescale s programmable PowerQUICC communications processors support these protocols with high performance and integrate many features to reduce chip count while offering the flexibility to reprogram network protocols in microcode as they evolve or are replaced by the next best thing. To help customers shorten time to revenue, Freescale is providing an Industrial Development Platform for the popular PowerQUICC II Pro communications processor in an industry-standard Computer On Module (COM) Express format. This platform provides the ability to evaluate both control and communications protocols for the industrial market.
2 COM Express Module and Carrier Board Industrial Development Platform The Reference Design Kit (MPC8360E-RDK) highlights the capabilities of the MPC83xx PowerQUICC processors for applications that require high-performance connectivity and determinism. The platform supports graphics and touch screen capability in addition to popular interfaces such as Ethernet, 64-bit PCI controllers, UARTS, integrated security engine, USB, SPI, I 2 C and (GPIO) pins. The platform ships with a Linux board support package, bootloader, productionready protocols for evaluation, and is supported by Freescale CodeWarrior tools and Wind River Linux and VxWorks. The protocols include: PROFIBUS which is licensable from IndusRAD, and ETHERNET Powerlink and IEEE 1588 which are licensable from IXXAT. Additional protocols are under development for this platform. This platform utilizes the industry-standard COM Express module for the MPC8360E microprocessor which allows for future MPC83xx modules to be offered for this development environment. Target applications include industrial automation, communications, and networked medical devices Platform is supported by full software, tools and evaluation copies such as PROFIBUS, ETHERNET Powerlink and IEEE 1588 industrial protocols Production Ready COM Express Module In addition, Freescale teamed up with Logic Product Development (LogicPD) to provide the COM Express module of this development system to ship in production volumes. 5 MPC8360E with QUICC Engine Technology is Ideal for Industrial Protocols Freescale s MPC8360E PowerQUICC processor integrates an e300 core, built on Power Architecture technology, with the latest programmable QUICC Engine communications processor. The QUICC Engine coprocessor supports a wide range of networking protocols across dual 32-bit RISC controllers. Its programmable microcode allows easy implementation and future revisions to industrial deterministic protocols similar to field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), while providing more flexibility than an application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) approach. QUICC Engine Flexibility Ideal for Industrial Protocols Offloads the core processor from communication and protocol traffic to increase bandwidth optimizing processor performance Achieves more efficient protocol implementation due to higher system integration of the QUICC Engine coprocessor and e300 core on one device Eliminates hardware, software, driver configuration and layout for a solution that requires more than one device to get the same functionality Eases migration and customization of protocols and upgrades through changes to microcode avoiding board re-design or implementing new devices The MPC8360E processor supports a wide range of communications interfaces, such as MII, RMII, GMII, TBI, RTBI, NMSI, UTOPIA, POS and TDM. The dual 32-bit DDR memory controllers help to ensure high-speed memory access and a local system bus operating up to 133 MHz. System connectivity is further enhanced by dual UART, dual interintegrated circuit (I 2 C), dual serial peripheral interface (SPI), PCI interfaces and Universal Serial Bus (USB) interface (USB 2.0 full-/lowspeed compatible). The MPC8360E processor also integrates the powerful integrated security engine derived from Freescale s security coprocessor product line to offload algorithms such as DES, 3DES, MD-5, SHA-1, AES and ARC-4 encryption, as well as a public key accelerator and an on-chip random number generator. This integrated security engine is capable of single-pass encryption and authentication as required by IPsec, the IEEE i standard and other security protocols. The PowerQUICC II Pro MPC8360E communications processor contains the QUICC Engine coprocessor running up to 500 MHz and the e300 core operating up to 667 MHz. Application software, which is developed for the MPC8360E, can easily port to other lower-priced members of the same product family, such as: The MPC8358E processor is pincompatible with the MPC8360E, runs at lower frequencies and offers slightly fewer features to be cost-effective and lower power than the MPC8360E The MPC8323E and MPC8321E processors further reduce power consumption and cost by using the e300c2 core running up to 333 MHz, a single-risc version of the QUICC Engine communications engine running up to 200 MHz supporting up to 5 network interfaces freescale.com/powerarchitecture freescale.com/industrialethernet 5
6 Production-Ready Protocol Stacks PowerQUICC processors are capable of supporting many different communications protocols. This brochure details three protocols which are available with the COM Express module at the time of publishing. EPL Segment Non-Real Time Domain PROFIBUS PROFIBUS ( is the world s leading fieldbus. With greater than 15 million devices installed globally, PROFIBUS has a greater installed-base than all other field buses combined. PROFIBUS was created as an open standard to eliminate point-topoint cabling and to significantly reduce design, installation, maintenance cost and complexity for factory automation, safety, drives, and motion control applications. The key PROFIBUS technologies are now included in the standards: IEC and IEC Router/Bridge PLC MN Drive PLC MN I/O Router/Bridge PLC MN PLC PROFIBUS is suitable for applications such as: Safety-relevant applications which don t use a second layer or distributed over special buses Fail-safe devices (emergency stop push buttons, light arrays, over-fill cutouts, etc.) for safety-related automation tasks Coordinated motional sequence of multiple drives, applications include electrical gears, curve discs and angular synchronous processes Distributed automation by means of clocked processes and electronic shafts (class 6) which can be implemented using slave-to-slave communication and isochronous slaves PROFIBUS International (PI), formed in 1989, now has more than 25 Regional PROFIBUS Associations with 1300 member companies including major PLC/DCS vendors such as Siemens, Hilscher, Invensys, GE Fanuc and Yaskawa. Over 400 engineers contribute to more than 40 working groups. Regional Accredited Competence Centers evaluate and approve commercial PROFIBUS solutions. Freescale partnered with IndusRAD to program QUICC Engine microcode to implement PROFIBUS on PowerQUICC processors. The first release of microcode supports Data Link layer, PROFIBUS Bus Management, Direct Data Link Mapper, Drive Decentralized Periphery (V0-V2) and Field Message Specification (FMS). The platform also supports general application profiles for PROFIsafe, redundancy and time stamping. However, at the time of printing this brochure, the software had not yet been written to support specific application profiles such as PROFIdrive, SEMI and RIO for Power Architecture technology. The PROFIBUS protocol stack can be licensed for MPC83xx devices as full software source code from IndusRAD ( Customers may contact IndusRAD to customize the stack to meet their own specific requirements. IndusRAD is a leading provider of innovative technology embedded solutions who is licensed to offer customized QUICC Engine microcode solutions to Freescale PowerQUICC processor customers. MN Drive Managing Node Controlled Node ETHERNET Powerlink ETHERNET Powerlink (EPL) is extended from standard Ethernet to offer real-time deterministic bus access for distributed automation systems, such as drive control systems. ETHERNET Powerlink is suitable for applications with hard real-time requirements in the range of microseconds, or guaranteed transmission of larger quantities of data within a defined period of time. Drive EPL is patent-free technology developed by the Ethernet Powerlink Standardization Group (EPSG), which has more than 50 members ( and more than 80,000 V1 nodes installed worldwide. 6 freescale.com/industrialethernet
7 PowerQUICC MPC8360E Industrial Development Platform EcoSystem IEEE 1588 ETHERNET Powerlink EPL supports 100% compliance with Fast Ethernet (maximum 100 Mbps transmission rate); EPL is compatible with 1 Gbps Ethernet, standard Ethernet controllers, and Internet Protocol (IP) based protocols (TCP,UDP, etc...); plus EPL provides hard real-time communication features including: Cycle times down to 200 µs Jitter below 1 µs VxWorks and Linux Central bus arbitration (MN) and collision avoidance on the Ethernet to optimize Ethernet bus capacity utilization Up to 1.5 KB of process data per message, with maximum message rate approximately 100,000 messages per second (PReq/PRes) The application interface of ETHERNET Powerlink V2 (completed in 2003) is based on the mechanisms defined in the CANopen communication profile DS301 of Control Area Network (CAN) in Automation (or EN ). It supports easy migration and integration from/with CANopen. CANopen Mechanisms (PDO, SDO, OBD, NMT) are fully transferred to EPL to ensure interoperability between CANopen and EPL systems and ease migration from CANopen to ETHERNET Powerlink at the software level. This offers customers potential for more technology MPC8360E-RDK Industrial Board sources and more vendor-independent system design. EPL features producer-consumer services that allow users to simultaneously control, configure and collect data from intelligent devices over a single network or use a single network as a backbone for multiple distributed networks. IEEE 1588 PROFIBUS COM Express IEEE ( Precision Clock Synchronization Protocol for Networked Measurement and Control Systems (PTP) was published in November 2002, to quickly synchronize networked clocks with differing precision, resolution and stability to better than a microsecond-level accuracy. This protocol was designed for lowcost implementation in Ethernet networks with simple installation and maintenance. IEEE 1588 is popular for applications such as: Time-sensitive telecommunication services which require precision time synchronization between communicating nodes Industrial network switches which synchronize sensors and actuators over a single wire distributed control network for automated assembly process control Powerline networks which synchronize across large-scale distributed power grid switches to enable smooth transfer of power Test/measurement devices which must maintain accurate time synchronization with the device under test in many different operating environments This protocol is already widely adopted by test and measurement, powerline management and industrial automation applications. IEEE 1588 Version 2 draft seems stable now and is expected to be published late It features improved support for large redundant networks and high-performance telecommunications applications. Many vendors are now developing hardware and software to support Version 2 and some will release product before the final specification is released from IEEE. IXXAT s commercial IEEE 1588 application software is optimized to support the hardware timestamping feature offered in both Freescale s QUICC Engine communications controller and the Enhanced Triple Speed Ethernet Controller (etsec). Both controllers timestamp Ethernet packets at the physical/ datalink layer the instant they enter or leave the device to give nanosecond-level clock synchronization accuracy for IEEE 1588 and similar synchronization protocols that take advantage of hardware timestamping capability. The IXXAT IEEE 1588 and ETHERNET Powerlink protocol stacks are available for free evaluation download from They can subsequently be licensed as full software source code which enables the user to customize stack modules and interfaces to meet application-specific requirements. In addition, IXXAT offers hardware and software development services for customers who wish to customize either onto their platform.
