2 Washington Assistive Technology Act Program Provide Assistive Technology resources and expertise to all Washington residence with disabilities to aid in making decisions and obtaining the technology and related services needed for employment, education and independent living Each state has a federally funded and mandated AT program that provides comprehensive statewide services University of Washington Center for Technology and Disability Studies (UWCTDS) is the lead agency for WATAP

4 Intro to the Changing Landscape of Technology According to an article from CBC News, the population of individuals with disabilities is the fastest-growing minority in the world The WHO is currently contributing to advancing research in the areas of assistive and medical devices needs and preferences, social innovations in models of care, and medication adherence innovations Apple, Amazon, Google and others have discovered what s good for someone with a disability is good for everyone else, too 4

6 Assistive Technology (AT) is... Any item, piece of equipment or product system, whether acquired commercially, off-the-shelf, modified or customized, that is used to increase, maintain, or improve functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities. Assistive Technology Act,

7 Assistive Technology Service Any service that directly assists in the selection, acquisition, or use of an AT device, including: evaluation or assessment purchasing, leasing, or their acquisition selecting, designing, customizing, repairing training or technical assistance 7

13 AT May Be.. Low Tech Low tech AT don't require much training, may be less expensive and do not have complex or mechanical features. Mid Tech may have some complex features, may be electronic or battery operated, may require some training to learn how to use and are more expensive Hi Tech the most complex devices or equipment, that have digital or electronic components, may be computerized, will likely require training and effort to learn how to use and cost the most. 13
