3 ipad Parts Dots indicating other screens Dock From page 9 - ipad User s Guide IOS8 (link below or download from ibooks app) Home Button Home (circled in red above) has many functions shown below: Press once to wake up the ipad Press once to return to the Home screen from any App Tap twice to access multitasking (the App switching screen) Tap and hold to access Siri (voice-activated assistant) To power your ipad on or off press and hold the Sleep/Wake Button (circled in red above) then slide your finger. This is similar to rebooting your computer. Whenever you are having problems, try this. By default the Side Switch (circled in red above) mutes the ipad. In Settings the same Side Switch can be changed to lock the screen orientation (portrait vs. landscape). To do this tap the Settings App; tap General then Lock Rotation. Use the Side Switch to prevent the ipad from changing orientations. Page 3 of 11

5 Control Center Swipe up from the bottom edge of any screen to access the Control Center. From the Control Center you can: Quickly access the camera, clock, volume, screen brightness, etc. Quickly toggle Wi-Fi or Bluetooth on and off Quickly switch to Do Not Disturb or Airplane mode Lock your screen orientation Swipe down to close Screen brightness Volume Notification Center Swipe down from the top edge of any screen to access the Notification Center. From the Notification Center you can: See a summary of today s weather (if Location Services for Weather is on) See today s calendar events See your reminders Swipe up to close Page 5 of 11

6 Virtual Keyboard The ipad has a virtual keyboard which appears whenever needed. The keys will vary depending upon the application. For example, when using Mail the keyboard will have symbol readily available. The screen shot below shows the Reminders App keyboard: Tap once for caps Double-tap for Caps Lock Tap once for numbers & special characters Tap to hide keyboard Tap for Emoji keyboard showing facial expressions Tap to dictate You can split the keyboard on purpose or by accident by using the spread gesture on the keyboard. Use the pinch gesture to put the keyboard back together. Dictate text rather than typing. Tap the microphone; say your words then tap Done. To undock the keyboard; tap and hold the Hide Keyboard icon; slide to Undock then release. To redock the keyboard do one of the following: Tap and hold the Hide Keyboard icon while dragging to the bottom of the screen or Tap and hold the Hide Keyboard icon; slide to Dock then release Page 6 of 11

7 Organizing Apps You can rearrange your Apps so that the ones used most frequently are on the first screen. You can also change which Apps appear on the Dock. By default there are four Apps on the Dock. You can have up to six. To re-arrange Apps: Tap the Home button to go to the Home screen Tap and hold one of the App icons All the App icons will begin to jiggle While the Apps are jiggling tap and hold the App you want to move Drag it to the new location Tap the Home button to turn off the jiggling Apps are always arranged in rows. You cannot have empty spaces. To delete an App; tap the x in the top right corner when the Apps are jiggling. You cannot delete the built-in Apps. To organize Apps into folders drag one App on top of a related App. A folder name will be assigned automatically. To change the folder name; tap the x then type in your name. Tap the Home button to turn off the jiggling. To delete a folder; remove all the Apps from the folder using the same re-arranging steps above. The folder will disappear once the Apps have been removed. Siri Siri is a voice-activated assistant. You can ask Siri questions about anything or ask Siri to play music, set the alarm, get directions, etc. Press and hold Home the Siri interface will appear (a wavy line at the bottom of your screen) o Ask your question or o Tap the question mark in the bottom left corner for sample questions Tap the microphone to ask another question Siri requires an Internet connection. If Siri was not turned on during the initial ipad setup, open the Settings App; tap General then tap Siri to turn it on. Siri was not available until the third generation ipad 2. Unlike PC computers you cannot add memory later. 9 ipad Interface There are four main features used in ipad Apps. They are meant to be intuitive and obvious. Just in case they are not self-explanatory see below: 1. Switches are like on/off buttons. Tap to turn on or off. Switches from the Settings App (Sound) Tap to turn off 2. Toolbars may appear at the top of a screen. Usually they are one or more words. Tap to make a selection. The screen shot below shows the Toolbar for the Maps App: Tap to select 3. Menus provide a list of options. Tap this button (Share icon) to see menu options that are context sensitive. The screen shot below shows the options available when viewing a photo: 4. Tab Bars are at the bottom of a screen. They are similar to Toolbars but each button represents a different App mode. The screen shot below shows the Tab Bar for the itunes App: ios As of November 2014, ios 81 is the latest Apple operating system software that runs ipads, iphones and ipods. To check your version: tap Settings, tap General, tap About then check the Version. You can also check to see if you have the latest version by tapping Software Update instead of About. Page 9 of 11

11 Passwords & IDs Passcode Apple ID Password icloud Optional four digit code that you enter to access your ipad Set it up initially or later through Settings, Passcode Combination address and password that you register with Apple Needed for purchase at Apps Store or itunes or IBooks Also needed for icloud, imessage, Face Time and Game Center Can be shared within a family Will be the same one you have been using to access your Your icloud account and password can be the same as your Apple ID and password or it can be different Cannot be shared within a family icloud & itunes Computer Software icloud provides online storage and backup. Additional storage can be purchased if needed. You can also use icloud to share information with other devices such as an iphone or computer. The basic service is free and comes with a free address. Tap the Settings App then icloud to see icloud settings. If you have a computer (PC or Mac) you can download itunes software to your computer then use itunes to back up your ipad with the syncing feature. You can also use itunes computer software to copy music CD s to your ipad. Don t confuse itunes software for your computer with the itunes Store app. ipad Battery Expect about 10 hours before recharging needed depending upon use Check the battery charge in the Status Bar (top of ipad) Ways to conserve your battery: o Turn off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth if not using (Settings) o Close apps not being used o Turn off Location Services if not needed (Settings, Privacy, Location Services) o Put ipad in Airplane Mode when you don t need alerts (Settings) o Turn off Background App Refresh (for individual apps or all apps Settings, General) o Use the auto lock feature which is similar to the sleep feature of PC computers (Settings, General, Auto-Lock then choose between 2, 5, 10 or 15 minutes) Page 11 of 11
