Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) College Network Connection Policy Benefits of BYOD Technology plays a significant role in our students lives. Personal devices can enhance and enrich learning opportunities both at home and school. Ignatius Park College is committed to allowing responsible, learning-centred use of personal devices at school to provide as many pathways to understanding as possible for our students. The introduction of the Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) Program from 2019 supports our vision of Liberating Education, by responding to the diverse learning needs of our students and providing access to electronic educational resources at any time and from any place. A netbook or laptop is necessary to personalise learning experiences so that our students may develop as critical thinkers in a globalised world. How it Works Parent owned laptops will be able to access the College network and licensed software via a Virtual Desktop Interface (VDI). This is where the College s software runs on a school server and the laptop acts as a screen and keyboard for the software running on the server. Devices will require the installation of VDI connection software for wireless connection and internet access to be enabled. This software will also allow the College to monitor the student s use of the internet on the device whilst connected to the College wireless network to ensure their online safety and adherence to the Ignatius Park College Acceptable Use of IT Policy. Using Your Laptop at the College Students will not be allowed to plug in power chargers in the classroom because of WHS requirements. Students are able to put their Laptop into sleep mode between classes so that it is instantly ready for the next class. The Laptop should be stored in a student s locker at break times or in practical supervised area where subjects such as Physical Education are being held or where the teacher has indicated that the Laptop will not be required for use at that time. If a student does find that their Laptop battery has gone flat because of the work they have been doing at the College, despite fully charging it the night before, then the student will need to use the provided charging areas in the Library and Innovation Spaces during the lunch break only. Internet Access To access the Internet at the College, students go through a Proxy Server. Students can access Internet through the VDI environment only. The Internet is controlled consistent with the Ignatius Park College ICT Agreement. 3

Printing Students will be able to access the printers around the College through the Virtual Desktop environment. Prices have been set to cover costs of printing. If students exceed quotas, then more printing credit will need to be purchased. Network Safety Student Laptops connect to the Wireless Network. This is a WPA2 Enterprise Network that uses Certificates rather than a password. Students are identified by their network login and password that they will usually only need to add once. Students can connect to our Wireless network to access the Virtual Desktop (VDI) environment, however, you will only be able to browse the Internet from within the Virtual Desktop and not directly from your laptop. Students should not connect their Laptop to the cabled network and should not be running any malicious software designed to capture Network traffic, keystrokes or probe the network in any way. Any detection of students doing this by the IT staff will be considered a hacking offence. Such offences are covered by the Cyber Crime Act. Students that use USB Wireless modems or Smart phones to obtain Internet Access on the College grounds are bound by the same rules of appropriate use as if they were using the College s Internet. The conditions for using the College s Network is the same for both wired and wireless. Adding Additional Software to Your Laptop Students have administrator rights to their computer and can install new software. They should be prudent in what they choose to install as there are plenty of programs on the Internet that can cause problems because they include older files that may overwrite the newer files used by the Operating System. Any software installed should not breach the Ignatius Park College ICT Agreement. Software that is added should be legally owned and should not be offensive, malicious or breach Copyright Laws. Games, Videos, Music and other Non-College Applications The College does not object to the installation of personally selected applications and files on the student laptops provided that the installed applications and files: Are appropriately licensed (i.e. they do not breach copyright and intellectual property laws this includes video and music downloads); Are ethically and morally acceptable (including consideration of College appropriateness, age appropriate ratings and privacy issues); Do not affect the efficient functioning of the laptops for educational purposes (i.e. they do not interfere with the speed and storage capacity of the Laptop or generate problems that might arise from increased battery use); Do not affect the College s wireless network; Do not interfere with the learning program (i.e. they may only be used in class under specific teacher direction); and Given that the Laptop is mainly for College use, all installed software needs to have a PG rating. 4

Playing Games Playing games and videos during College time will have an impact on battery performance. While some games have educational benefits and may be used in the classroom, other games have little educational merit and may affect network function. Therefore: Games should only be played on devices if directed by the classroom teacher, as part of or to compliment the teaching program; The use of network games is banned; and No ad-hoc networks should be formed to play games unless directed to by staff for a clear educational purpose. Mobile Network Tethering Ignatius Park College uses web filtering for student internet use to protect against web threats and inappropriate websites. Mobile network tethering provides students with UNFILTERED networks. These types of internet connections need to be disabled before arrival at school as the school cannot monitor or take responsibility for content accessed via these methods. School Technical Support School technicians are only able to provide a diagnostic level of support for BYOD Laptops. Software/Hardware warranty and Accidental Damage Claims are the responsibility of the parent/guardian and their vendor. Protection for Your Laptop Carry Case All laptops should be stored when not in use in a well-padded laptop carry case not a backpack. Carry cases and laptops needs to be of a size that allows for storage in the college provided lockers Insurance, Warranty and Accidental Damage Protection (ADP) Laptops are expensive technical devices and they do break down and can be damaged in a School environment. The College does not have specific Insurance policies to protect students and teachers individual property. This is why taking the Accidental Damage, Accidental Loss and Theft Protection Policy is a wise move. This policy is an extra option available for parents at time of purchase. Alternatively, check your Household Insurance to ensure the device is covered. 5

Virus Protection All laptops should have an Antivirus program installed. There are many good free products that can do this such as AVG Free and Microsoft Security Essentials. These don t have big performance issues with the Laptop. Backup and Data Storage It is the student s responsibility to ensure their data is regularly backed up. The method for backing up data is dependent on the device: Data created on a school-owned device should be saved to the student s Home Drive and backed up to the student s OneDrive, USB drive or portable Hard Disk; and Data created on a student-owned laptop should be backed up (by saving) to the student s Home Drive at school as well as backing it up to OneDrive or a portable device such as a USB or portable Hard Disk. 6

Minimum Device Specifications *The correct graphics card and i5 or higher processor is essential for those students undertaking any Senior HPE, Technology, Film. Media and Art subjects from Year 9. 7

Caring for your Laptop Packing Away Your Laptop Always store the Laptop in a carry case. Do not wrap the cord too tightly around the power adapter or the cord may become damaged. Try to avoid moving the Laptop around when it is on and use sleep mode between classes. Before switching it on, gently place the Laptop on a stable surface and then switch it on. Be careful with the Laptop while it is in the bag. Do not drop the bag. Always place the Laptop bag gently down. Avoid putting anything heavy on the Laptop and make sure it is switched off for travel to and from the College. Operating Conditions Do not place objects on top of the Laptop and never carry it around while it is turned on and in active mode. Avoid exposing the Laptop to direct sunlight or sources of heat such as desk lamps, dust, dirt, rain, liquids or moisture, heavy shock or vibration. Charging Your Battery Students should charge their computer each night and bring it to the College fully charged. Battery life is affected by the use of the Laptop, so it is common for a Battery Power Profile to try and save power by turning down the screen brightness, turning off sound and backlit keys and resting the hard drive. If a student is doing intensive work with programs such as image manipulation or video editing, then more power is used than with straightforward text editing. Students may charge their devices in the Library and some prescribed rooms during lunch break. Due to Workplace Health and Safety, students are not permitted to charge their device in a classroom where the cord runs along the floor or in such a manner that it could create a tripping hazard for themselves and/or others in the room. LCD Screens LCD screens are delicate they don t like being poked, prodded, pushed or slammed. Never pick up the Laptop by its screen. Don t slam the screen closed and make sure that there are no objects on the Laptop such as pens when closing the screen. It is strongly advised that all users are aware of the care required to look after the LCD screens. This is usually the most expensive part of the Laptop to repair and the most commonly damaged part. To clean your LCD screen: Switch off the Laptop; Lightly dampen a non-abrasive cloth with water and gently wipe the screen in a circular motion; Do not directly apply water or cleaner to the screen; and Avoid applying pressure to the screen. AC Adaptor Connect the adapter only to this Laptop; Do not step on the power cord or place heavy objects on top of it; 8

Keep the cord away from walkways and/or heavy traffic areas When unplugging the power cord, pull on the plug itself, rather than the cord; and Do not wrap the cord too tightly around the adapter/transformer box. BYOD: Guidelines for Use Access to the Ignatius Park College wireless guest network is a privilege, not a right. Any use of the wireless network entails personal responsibility and compliance with all school rules and the Ignatius Park College IT Acceptable Use Policies. In using the Ignatius Park College network, you willingly grant the College IT staff permission to conduct any necessary investigations regarding inappropriate network and/or internet use at any time. The approval of each device and its connection to the network will be at the discretion of the College Principal and the school s IT staff, to ensure the security of the school s network. Use of a personal laptop or tablet devices during the school day is at the discretion of teachers and staff; Students must use these devices as directed by their teacher. For some lessons, teachers and/or supervisors may direct that devices are not used; The primary purpose of the use of personal devices at school is educational; The device is used as a secondary means of data collection and note-taking. Pens and books remain a primary requirement for all lessons; The use of a personal device is not to be a distraction in any way to teachers or to students. The use of personal devices must not disrupt class in any way; The use of personal devices is covered by the Ignatius Park College IT Acceptable Use Policies; Students are not permitted to use personal laptops outside scheduled classroom times (i.e. recess or lunch) other than in a supervised learning area such as the Library or during a tutoring session; Students agree not to attempt to circumvent the school s network security, AB Tutor, VDI and/or filtering policies. This includes setting up proxies and downloading programs to bypass security, whether these programs are executed or not; Students shall not distribute pictures, audio or video of students or staff without the College s express written permission; and No recording of class lessons will be permissible unless approved by the teacher. 9

Consequences for non compliance with the Policy: College and BYOD Devices: The use and maintenance of BYOD and College supplied devices is covered by the following policies and guidelines set out in the Student Diary: Computer Facilities Acceptable Use Policy; Electronic Device Acceptable Use Policy; and Student & Parent Netbook Computer Guidelines. BYOD and Personal Devices (including mobile phones/recording devices/ laptops/ accessories): The following procedures will be used to encourage students to correct misuse of any of these devices 1. If a personal device or accessory is used or seen by a staff member during the school day, the staff member will ask for the device to be given to them so that it can be passed onto the student s Pastoral Leader. The consequences for a first or second occasion that a device/accessory is confiscated will be with holding of the device/accessory by the Pastoral Leader until a write out of the Electronic Technology policy is completed. The third time that a device/accessory is confiscated, the device/accessory will be passed onto the Deputy Principal (Pastoral) who will issue an Amber Detention. Repeated issues beyond three confiscations will result in the need for an interview with parents and the issuing of a Saturday Detention. 2. A student who uses a device to take a sound recording, photograph or video footage of another member of the Ignatius Park College community, without permission, is placing his position at the College at risk. There is no permission to use devices for this purpose during the school day without the express permission of a teacher. Any failure to adhere to these requirements represents a serious breach of privacy and will result in referral to the Deputy Principal (Pastoral) for consideration of suspension of enrolment. 3. Similarly, a student who uses an electronic device or application to harass or bully another member of the Ignatius Park College community is also placing his position at the College at risk. This represents a serious breach of College expectations and will also result in referral to the Deputy Principal (Pastoral) for consideration of suspension of enrolment. 4. Students who make use of their BYOD or College netbook during school hours (8.00am 3.03pm) and outside of either a scheduled class or supervised room (i.e. Library) will be given a write out based on the dangers of excessive electronic media use. On the third occasion, they will be issued an Amber Detention. Repeated infringements will lead to an interview with parents and a Saturday Detention being issued. 10

College Liability Statement Students bring their own personal devices to use at Ignatius Park College at their own risk. It is their duty to be responsible for the upkeep and protection (anti-virus software/security settings) of their devices. Ignatius Park College will NOT be responsible for: Personal devices that are broken/damaged while at school or during schoolrelated activities; Personal devices that are lost or stolen at school or during school-related activities; Maintenance or upkeep of any personal device (keeping it charged, installing updates, fixing any software or hardware issues); and School licensed software will not be installed on student personal devices; and The College strongly suggests that Parents / Guardians take out their own insurance coverage in relation to the devices, as College insurance policies do not cover devices owned by parents, guardians, students or other parties. STUDENT INFORMATION Name: Year level: House: Type of device: Serial number: Wireless MAC address: I agree to abide by the Ignatius Park College IT Acceptable Usage Policy and all policies pertaining to the use of computer devices at the school. I acknowledge that the College will not be liable for any devices damaged, broken or stolen at school or on school-related activities. I will bring the device to school fully charged every day and will only use the device for school related educational purposes while at school. I will not use the device at recess or lunchtime unless for study or completion of school work within the Library or authorised tutoring session. I understand that should I breach any of the College regulations pertaining to the use of laptops or the internet whilst at school will mean I forfeit the opportunity of using my own personal device at school.
