Customer may make copies of the software for archival purposes, or to facilitate its use with the mass storage media of a particular computer (e.g. copy to hard disk). Customer may make copies of the software for use on two or more computers ONLY in the case when the data to be analyzed or manipulated is generated by the same individual LI-COR instrument. Customer has no other rights to copy this software without express permission from LI-COR. Limited Warranty Software: LI-COR warrants for a period of 90 days from the date of purchase that the product will execute its instructions when properly installed on the computer indicated in its instruction manual. LI-COR does not warrant that the software is free from errors. In the event that this product fails to execute properly during its warranty period, customer should contact LI-COR. If the problem cannot be resolved in a reasonable amount of time, the customer's recourse is to return the software and all copies to LI-COR for a refund. Media: LI-COR warrants the media upon which this software is recorded to be free from defects of material or workmanship under normal usage for a period of 90 days from the date of purchase. Should the media prove to be defective in the warranty period, the customer's recourse is to return the media to LI-COR for replacement.

The provides 192K bytes of memory in a sealed, stainless steel canister that can be used in field conditions. Data stored in the are sent to a computer or terminal using the SC532 peripheral device. The SC532 requires a 12 VDC input, provided by the AC adapter included ( or VAC). Software (SMCOM) is also included which will enable you to collect and store data from the Storage Module. SMCOM runs on any IBM PC,XT,AT,PS/2 or true IBM compatible computer. This manual describes the procedure for transferring data from the LI-1600 to the Storage Module, and for sending data to your computer or terminal with the SC532 peripheral device and the SMCOM software. 4 Sending Data to the CABLES The Storage Module System is connected to the LI-1600 Steady State Porometer using the cable provided. This is the round cable terminated with 9-pin male and female connectors. Use only this cable, as it is specially configured to provide the with 5 VDC power. Power is drawn from the LI-1600 when sending data, or from the AC adapter when using the SC532 to send data to the computer. FILE CONFIGURATION Data are sent to the Storage Module each time the HOLD switch on the LI-1600 is toggled to the left. All data are loaded into a single file until power to the is interrupted. This is done by turning the LI-1600 off. If the LI-1600 is powered off, the time stamp (number of seconds since the LI-1600 was turned on) will be reset. If you wish to reformat the resulting files using the R1600.EXE program to add a date/time stamp, each file will need to be reformatted individually. See the R1600.EXE description for more details. The memory is configured as ring style memory, meaning that new data continue to be stored even after the memory is full. New data are written over the oldest data in the memory. If you do not wish to overwrite data, you should be aware of how much memory has been filled. Each data set from the LI-1600 occupies approximately 124 bytes of storage, meaning that about 1548 sets of data from the LI-1600 can be sent to the storage module before it is completely full. Data in one or several stored files can be sent to a computer using the SC532 peripheral device. 4 Sending Data to the

5 Sending Data to the Computer CONNECTING THE SC532 Follow these steps to send data from the Storage Module System to the computer using the SC532 Peripheral device and the SMCOM software program: Connect the SC532 to the using the 9-pin ribbon cable (SC12) provided. Connect the other end of this cable to the SC532 9-pin RS-232C port labeled "PERIPHERAL". Connect the SC532 to the serial port of your computer using the 25-pin RS-232C ribbon cable provided. If your computer has an AT-type 9-pin serial port, a 9-pin to 25-pin straight-through adapter cable will be required. Plug the AC adapter of the SC532 into an AC power source ( or VAC) after selecting the proper voltage on the adapter. When you have connected the cables as shown below, you are ready to begin sending data to the computer, using the SMCOM program. 6 SMCOM.EXE GENERAL INFORMATION The SMCOM program is a general purpose communications program for sending data from the Storage Module to your computer or terminal. The SMCOM program contains a variety of options for sending data from data loggers and other instruments; many of these options are not used for capturing data from the LI See the SMCOM Instruction Manual from Campbell Scientific, Inc. for a detailed description of these options. The instructions which follow detail only the information necessary to send data from the LI-1600 to your computer. The files on the disk are: PROGRAM FILES SMCOM - General purpose communications program for the LI-1600 Steady State Porometer. R1600.EXE - Reformats LI-1600 data files (2-line format) into channel groupings. *.HLP - Help file for R1600.EXE. INSTALLATION No special installation procedures are needed to install the SMCOM program. Make a backup copy of the diskette if you plan to use the SMCOM program directly from the floppy disk, or copy the contents of the diskette onto your computer's hard disk. 1) To run the program, type SMCOM <enter> at the DOS prompt. Logan, Utah Serial Port Options: 1 - COM1 2 - COM2 3 - COM3 4 - COM4 Option: 2) Enter the appropriate number for the serial port which is connected to the SC532 (usually COM1 or COM2). The following prompt appears: Is the SM232 or SM232A interface being used? (Y/N): 3) Press N, and the SMCOM program will attempt to establish communications with the Storage Module. The baud rate at which the sends and receives data is preset at the factory to 300 baud. The SMCOM program will initially attempt to communicate at higher baud rates. The error message SM192/SM716 Storage Module does not respond! Reducing baud rate... will appear several times, until communications are established at 300 baud. If proper communication is not established, check to be sure that all cables are properly connected, and that the correct serial port was specified. SMCOM.EXE 7

8 Options OPTIONS The SMCOM Options Menu will appear, and is displayed as follows: SMCOM Options: T - Terminal emulator. * A - Collect all data files. * U - Collect uncollected data files. * N - Collect newest data file. L - Collect one data file starting at display pointer L. P - Collect program files. D - Store a.dld program file. F - Store a file. * E - Erase and Reset Storage Module. * S - Switch Settings. * Q - Quit. * These options are valid for use with the Storage Module A - Collect all data files This option copies all data files in the Storage Module to the computer. The SMCOM program will ask you for the root name of the file or files to which you wish to send data. Enter a root name (4 characters or less) and press <enter>. The SMCOM program will detect the file separators (created by interrupting power to the module when sending LI-1600 data) and will assign sequential numbers and.dat extensions to each file sent, starting with the oldest file first. For example, by typing the root filename "DEMO", files will be stored as DEMO 1.dat, DEMO 2.dat, etc. A data collection format menu appears as follows: F - Final Storage (FS) Format D - FS converted to ASCII arrays with IDs C - FS converted to comma delineated ASCII arrays A - As stored (8 bit data) * P - As stored (strip parity) 8 SMCOM.EXE

9 Options Select P to send LI-1600 data to the computer. This option sets the parity bit (bit 8) of each byte to zero when it is stored in a file. The message "xxxxxx: Writing to file ROOTn.dat." will appear, where "xxxxxx" is the beginning location number of the file in the , and ROOT is the file name you entered. The data can now be viewed or manipulated as you choose. U - Collect uncollected data files This option functions the same as the A option above, with the exception that only the files created since the last time the U or A option was executed are collected (assuming that the has not been reset using the Erase option. See below). N - Collect newest data file This option collects the most recently stored file. E - Erase and Reset Storage Module This function erases all files in the , and resets the storage module to the default positions. NOTE: This function resets the baud rate in the to 76800/9600. The LI-1600 will not communicate with the Storage Module at this baud rate. Before attempting to read data into the Storage Module again, you must reset the baud rate to 300 with the S option (see below). S - Switch Settings Press S to reset the baud rate in the The cursor will move to the top of the screen. Use the up and down arrow keys or the <enter> key to scroll through the options. Use the spacebar to highlight 300 baud, and press <esc>. The program returns to the Main Menu after resetting the baud rate. Q - Quit Quits SMCOM and returns to DOS. SMCOM.EXE 9

10 R1600.EXE GENERAL INFORMATION R1600.EXE will reformat an LI-1600 data file that was output using the 2-line format which the instrument produces. The R1600 program will also add an offset time stamp to any LI-1600 data file, if desired, which will be added to the #S (time since instrument turn on, in seconds) values to produce a real time identifier. R1600 creates a file that has all the channels listed horizontally, and sorted by time vertically. FILE... #C #S DR CD TR QU... 00:00: :00: :01: To run the R1600 program, log onto the proper drive and at the DOS prompt type R1600 <source file> <destination> where <source> is the appropriate file specifier, and <destination> is the print destination [optional; the default destination is CON (console)]. To add an offset time to the source file, type R1600 <source> <destination> <hh:mm:ss> For example, typing "R1600 corn.dat corn.prn 14:30:00" at the DOS prompt would reformat the source file corn.dat, send it to the printer, and add a time offset of fourteen 10 R1600.EXE

12 Specifications and Maintenance BACKUP POWER Memory backup power for the Storage Module is provided by an internal 3.5 VDC lithium chloride battery, when the module is disconnected from a primary power source. Approximately 10 years of RAM backup power can be expected at room temperature. Higher temperatures increase the current consumption of the RAM chips and the self-discharge rate of the battery, while lower temperatures decrease the battery's capacity. At 50 C, battery life will be approximately 3 years; at -25 C battery life will be about 6 years. If possible, maintain the Storage Module at or near room temperature when not connected to a primary power source. 13 General Information MAINTENANCE There are no user serviceable parts in the Storage Module. If the battery requires replacement (SM192 no longer stores or retains data), the Storage Module must be returned to LI-COR. Specifications and Maintenance 13

14 WARRANTY Each LI-COR, inc. instrument is warranted by LI-COR, inc. to be free from defects in material and workmanship; however, LI-COR, inc.'s sole obligation under this warranty shall be to repair or replace any part of the instrument which LI-COR, inc.'s examination discloses to have been defective in material or workmanship without charge and only under the following conditions, which are: 1. The defects are called to the attention of LI-COR, inc. in Lincoln, Nebraska, in writing within one year after the shipping date of the instrument. 2. The instrument has not been maintained, repaired, or altered by anyone who was not approved by LI-COR, inc. 3. The instrument was used in the normal, proper, and ordinary manner and has not been abused, altered, misused, neglected, involved in and accident or damaged by act of God or other casualty. 4. The purchaser, whether it is a DISTRIBUTOR or direct customer of LI-COR or a DISTRIBUTOR'S customer, packs and ships or delivers the instrument to LI-COR, inc. at LI-COR inc.'s factory in Lincoln, Nebraska, U.S.A. within 30 days after LI-COR, inc. has received written notice of the defect. Unless other arrangements have been made in writing, transportation to LI-COR, inc. (by air unless otherwise authorized by LI-COR, inc.) is at customer expense. 5. No-charge repair parts may be sent at LI-COR, inc.'s sole discretion to the purchaser for installation by purchaser. 6. LI-COR, inc.'s liability is limited to repair or replace any part of the instrument without charge if LI-COR, inc.'s examination disclosed that part to have been defective in material or workmanship. There are no warranties, express or implied, including but not limited to any implied warranty of merchantability of fitness for a particular purpose on underwater cables or on expendables such as batteries, lamps, thermocouples, and calibrations. Other than the obligation of LI-COR, inc. expressly set forth herein, LI-COR, inc. disclaims all warranties of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose. The foregoing constitutes LI-COR, inc.'s sole obligation and liability with respect to damages resulting from the use or performance of the instrument and in no event shall LI-COR, inc. or its representatives be liable for damages beyond the price paid for the instrument, or for direct, incidental or consequential damages. The laws of some locations may not allow the exclusion or limitation on implied warranties or on incidental or consequential damages, so the limitations herein may not apply directly. This warranty gives you specific legal rights, and you may already have other rights which vary from state to state. All

15 warranties that apply, whether included by this contract or by law, are limited to the time period of this warranty which is a twelve-month period commencing from the date the instrument is shipped to a user who is a customer or eighteen months from the date of shipment to LI-COR, inc.'s authorized distributor, whichever is earlier. This warranty supersedes all warranties for products purchased prior to June 1, 1984, unless this warranty is later superseded. DISTRIBUTOR or the DISTRIBUTOR'S customers may ship the instruments directly to LI-COR if they are unable to repair the instrument themselves even though the DISTRIBUTOR has been approved for making such repairs and has agreed with the customer to make such repairs as covered by this limited warranty.
