About SDL MultiTerm 1 ABOUT SDL MULTITERM This section provides a basic overview of SDL MultiTerm. Aspects of the system that are introduced below are explained in more detail in the online Help topics. Local and Remote Termbases MultiTerm is a scalable solution that can be used in single- or multi-user setups. In a single-user setup, termbases are stored on the local computer. In a multi-user setup, termbases are stored centrally on a remote database server in the network environment. MultiTerm therefore differentiates between local and remote termbases. Data Storage MultiTerm uses third-party technology to store termbase data. The current version of the system uses the Microsoft Jet database engine to store termbase data locally, and database technologies such as Microsoft SQL Server and Oracle to store termbase data centrally in the network environment. MultiTerm XML Data Format The MultiTerm system is built on a common XML-compliant data format called MultiTerm XML (MTF.XML). In the termbases that you create using MultiTerm, all terminology data is stored in this format; other termbase elements, such as the termbase definition and objects, are also XMLcompliant. The use of an XML-compliant format enables quick and easy exchange of data between users, whether or not they belong to the same network and whether they are using local or remote termbases. SDL MULTITERM 2009 INSTALLATION GUIDE 1-3

1 About SDL MultiTerm You can easily convert existing termbases in other MultiTerm formats to MultiTerm XML using MultiTerm onvert. This application also facilitates the conversion of terminology data in a range of other formats, including Microsoft Excel (*.xls) and spreadsheet and database exchange format. Examples of spreadsheet and database exchange format include tab-delimited text files (*.txt) and comma-separated value files (*.csv). See the table below. File Type Trados MultiTerm 5 SDL Termbase Desktop SDL Termbase Online OLIF (Open Lexicon Interchange Format) Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet and Database Exchange Termbase Exchange (Termbase exchange Format) Extension (*.mtw) (*.tdb) (*.mdb) (*.xml) (*.xls) (*.txt, *.csv) (*.tbx)/(*.xml) For more information about SDL MultiTerm onvert see the online Help topics. MultiTerm Server MultiTerm Server is the middleware component in a client/server installation of MultiTerm. It is the hub of the system, providing MultiTerm clients with access to termbases that are stored on a remote database server. Within a given network, MultiTerm Server can facilitate an unlimited number of client connections. Its capacity can be further enhanced through the MultiTerm Online and MultiTerm Anywhere server applications. MultiTerm Online allows termbases to be published on the web and generates the MultiTerm Online web interface to access online termbases. MultiTerm Anywhere enables the MultiTerm clients to negotiate firewalls and gain access to remote termbases that are stored in a different physical domain. Language Support MultiTerm is fully Unicode-compliant and therefore supports a wide range of languages, including bi-directional and double-byte character set (DBS) languages such as Japanese, hinese and 1-4 SDL MULTITERM 2009 INSTALLATION GUIDE

About SDL MultiTerm 1 Korean. Note that in order to render non-western languages successfully in MultiTerm, you must have support for the relevant language installed on your computer. The termbase model supports mixed language content in termbase fields. D NOTE We recommend that the names of all termbase definitions and termbase objects be in ASII (American Standard ode for Information Interchange) as this ensures compatibility across different language installations. ASII is the standard code used for information interchange between systems and has 128 characters. File names in ASII can use all upper and lowercase letters and numbers. They should not contain punctuation marks or other symbols such as \ / : * " " < > or accented characters. Hindi entries are displayed using Arial Unicode MS. Editions of SDL MultiTerm There are three different editions of SDL MultiTerm; MultiTerm Desktop, MultiTerm Team and MultiTerm Server. These are outlined below. E TIP The information in this guide covers the installation of MultiTerm Desktop, the client component package that is common to all editions. SDL MultiTerm Desktop MultiTerm Desktop is designed for terminology end users who work in single-user setups. These users receive the MultiTerm Desktop client component package which includes MultiTerm, MultiTerm onvert, and the MultiTerm interfaces with Microsoft Word and Translator s Workbench. MultiTerm and the MultiTerm interfaces provide full support for both local and remote termbases. For more information, see SDL MultiTerm Desktop on page 1-8. The terminology extraction tools, MultiTerm Extract and PhraseFinder are also available with MultiTerm Desktop as optional modules. SDL MultiTerm Team MultiTerm Team is designed for small teams. Termbases are stored centrally on the back end of the system. The back end comprises a third-party database management system, Microsoft Jet. MultiTerm Team includes the following components: MultiTerm Administrator, MultiTerm Anywhere and MultiTerm Server onsole. MultiTerm Server also includes the MultiTerm Desktop client component package. SDL MULTITERM 2009 INSTALLATION GUIDE 1-5

1 About SDL MultiTerm SDL MultiTerm Server MultiTerm Server is the client/server implementation of the MultiTerm system, designed for multiuser setups. It can facilitate an unlimited number of user connections between client front ends and MultiTerm Server. MultiTerm Server is the hub of the system, providing clients with access to termbases that are stored centrally on the back end of the system. The back end comprises a thirdparty database management system, such as Microsoft SQL Server, Microsoft SQL Server Express or Oracle. MultiTerm Server includes the following components: MultiTerm Server, MultiTerm Online, MultiTerm Anywhere and MultiTerm Server onsole. 11 License Restrictions 1 LIENSE RESTRITIONS In a client/server installation of MultiTerm, MultiTerm Server is copy-protected and its use is therefore subject to the terms of the relevant license. For more information about MultiTerm Server license restrictions refer to the SDL MultiTerm Server Installation Guide. If you are a MultiTerm Team user, you have full access to all the termbases on your MultiTerm Team server. No license enforcement applies when you use the MultiTerm Desktop to work with local termbases. When working with local termbases, you have exclusive access to termbase data and unlimited user rights. MultiTerm Extract License Restrictions MultiTerm Extract uses a floating license mechanism for copy protection. The license information is stored in a license file that is used to monitor use of the application and impose any necessary license restrictions. The license file can be stored on your local computer or an FLEXlm license server. The license file (*.lic) contains information about the license and governs access to MultiTerm Extract. When you purchase MultiTerm Extract you receive a license authorization code along with a website URL. To obtain a license file: 1 Browse to the URL you received when you purchased MultiTerm Extract, enter your license authorization code and download your license file. SDL will you detailed instructions to help you. 2 If you use an FLEXlm license server, store the license file in :\Program Files\SDL\MultiTerm8\License Server\LicenseFiles. 3 Use the SDL License Manager to activate and monitor your license files. D NOTE For complete information on how to work with the FLEXlm Licensing Tool, see the FLEXlm Licensing Tool documentation in the FLEXlm End Users Guide. If you do not run a license server, you can store the license file anywhere on your hard disk. Be sure to remember the location of the file, though, as you will have to specify its location during or after the installation of MultiTerm Extract. For more information on pricing for MultiTerm Extract licenses, contact your SDL representative. SDL MULTITERM 2009 INSTALLATION GUIDE 1-7

Upgrading From Previous MultiTerm Installations 2 UPGRADING FROM PREVIOUS MULTITERM INSTALLATIONS The current release of MultiTerm, SDL MultiTerm Desktop 2009, has the version number 8.0. There is no direct upgrade between previous versions of MultiTerm and SDL MultiTerm If there is an earlier version of MultiTerm Desktop on the machine where MultiTerm 2009 is to be installed, the earlier version must be removed. E TIP To check which version of an application you are using, go to the About box (Help menu) where information about version number, build number and license is displayed. Previous MultiTerm Installation Locations The following list describes the default installation locations of earlier MultiTerm versions. The default installation location for MultiTerm Desktop version 7.5 is: :\Program Files\SDL International\SDL MultiTerm 2007 The default installation location for MultiTerm Desktop version 7.0 and 7.1 was: :\Program Files\TRADOS\MultiTerm\ The default installation location for MultiTerm Workstation version 6.2 was: :\Program Files\TRADOS\MTiX\MultiTerm\ The default installation location for MultiTerm Workstation version 6.0 was as follows: :\Program Files\TRADOS\orporate Language\MultiTerm\ Backing Up The Database We strongly recommend that all termbases are backed up. To do this follow the procedure for Removing MultiTerm Desktop described below. It is also best practice to create a copy of all files in a separate folder. You can also use the Export Wizard to export the entire terminology data contents of a given termbase to an XML export file. Termbase objects should be saved to a common folder so that they are available later. Removing Previous MultiTerm Installations Use the Remove option for MultiTerm 2009 in the ontrol Panel of your computer. SDL MULTITERM 2009 INSTALLATION GUIDE 2-3

2 Upgrading From Previous MultiTerm Installations This will remove all MultiTerm files, folders and registry entries from your computer, except for the contents of the Termbase folder. The Termbase folder contains the MultiTerm master database and the individual termbase files for your installation. During removal, the MultiTerm installer automatically creates a subfolder called Backup within the Termbase folder, and places the MultiTerm master database and the individual termbase files in there. To remove MultiTerm using the ontrol Panel: 1 From the Start menu on your computer, open the ontrol Panel. 2 Double-click Add or Remove Programs. The Add or Remove Programs dialog box opens. 3 From the urrently installed programs list, select MultiTerm. 4 lick Remove. A progress bar appears and MultiTerm is removed from your computer. During removal, the MultiTerm installer runs in the background and automatically creates a subfolder called Backup within the Termbase folder of your installation. Backup copies of the MultiTerm master database and the individual termbase files are placed in there. These backup copies can be opened in MultiTerm For more information, see Termbase ompatibility on page 2-4.After removal, MultiTerm is no longer present in the urrently installed programs list. Termbase ompatibility Termbase ompatibility - Local Termbase Termbases that have been created in MultiTerm 6.x or later are supported and can be opened directly in MultiTerm Desktop However, you can continue to use older termbases in MultiTerm Desktop 2009 by converting them to MultiTerm XML format using MultiTerm onvert. The conversion process automatically produces a termbase definition (XDT) file. A termbase definition file describes the structure of your terminology data and is used to create the new termbase where the converted data will be stored. MultiTerm onvert is a stand-alone application that does not require access to MultiTerm Server and is therefore not dependent on MultiTerm Administrator. MultiTerm onvert can be installed during the MultiTerm Desktop installation and has its own help system. For more information see The Installation Procedure on page 2-8. MultiTerm 2009 does not allow you to add terms which are longer than 255 characters. Terms imported from MultiTerm 95 or MultiTerm 5 which are longer than 255 characters may give faulty search results in MultiTerm SDL MULTITERM 2009 INSTALLATION GUIDE

Upgrading From Previous MultiTerm Installations 2 Termbase Object ompatibility Termbase objects such as filters, layouts, input models, export and import definitions, cannot be migrated from MultiTerm 95 Plus or MultiTerm 5.x to MultiTerm version You have to recreate these termbase objects manually in MultiTerm version 2009 as soon as the terminology data for the relevant termbase is converted and imported. Termbase objects created in later versions of MultiTerm can be saved to a common folder location using the Save facility from the atalog view and subsequently loaded into MultiTerm 2009 termbases as required. On the following page there is a chart which shows the steps involved in accessing termbases created in older versions of MultiTerm. SDL MULTITERM 2009 INSTALLATION GUIDE 2-5
