This paper is based on the comparison of Windows and Linux operating system. It describe about the pros and cons of the both the operating system. Both the operating systems have their own specifications. In the paper there is introduction about windows and its versions Linux and versions. 2 I. INTRODUCTION Linux is an open source operating system. Linus Torvalds, said to be father of Linux. Kernel named Linuses turned into operating system Linux.. Free to download and use. Modifications can be done by anyone and it is open for all to adopt, and as a result it has developed into a very powerful OS that is rapidly gaining in popularity worldwide. Customization and Security is one of unique features of Linux over Windows [1-10]. Windows or Microsoft Windows, It is a graphical operating system. It is design developed and sold by Microsoft Corporation. It is introduced on November 20, 1985.It is the first Graphical User interface which is firstly developed only for IBM compatible PCs. It is a GUI interface which is allow user to interact with the system. Now it is a series of operating Systems, which leads world of computing to the next level [10-15]. WINDOWS Windows is an operating system under the flagship of Microsoft. It is a series of different versions of operating system. It was announced on November 20, 1985.Windows included graphical user interface. For last 20 years windows become most widely used operating system. Windows famous with ease of user friendliness [15-25]. Advantages of windows 1. User friendly. 2. All the hardwire control units supports windows 3. Most of the software is available for windows. 4. Easy to use and understand Disadvantages of windows 1. Windows is more expensive 2. Less Reliable. 3. Windows is not so secure. It is unix based operating system. It is created by student named LINUS TORVALDS after its paid version Minix. Linux operating system is open source, so anyone can use it and modify as per they can. Linux operating system is widely used for business and home use, and the number of user are increasing day by day [25-30]. The various operating systems that use the Linux kernel Ubuntu Debian Redhat Fedora Chromeos Android Advantages of Linux Freeware. Secure and Fast Flexibility, Fault,Tolerance Disadvantages of Linux User cannot easily access. All hardware does not support. 4 It provides user a vast amount of documentation sector also. Some main features of the windows operating system are: It is free to use and distribute. It is very reliable. A huge amount of free software developed for it. It is very resistant to malware like spyware, adware and virus. It can run on variety of machines, Since the source code is visible so backdoors are simply spotted. It provides a high degree of flexibility for configuration. It can be updated without modify the source code. Advantages of Windows The main advantage of windows operating system is it provides a range of readymade solutions, wide range and number or user, so any one can find its related software and one of the main part is its own help section. It provides user a vast amount of documentation sector also. Some main features of the windows operating system are: 1. Windows is much faster operating Systems. 2. Provides Readymade solutions 3. Microsoft office is a big advantages 4. Easy handling 5. Large library of software, games 6. Supports maximum numbers of hardware and drivers 7. Good platform for all programs 8. Linux is good in providing security and on the other side Windows have its own help centre which provides solution for any problem [31-38].Figure 1 compares some of the parameters of Linux and windows. IV. CONCLUSIONS In windows and Linux operating system, there are many differences in various fields. Both the operating system has their own pros and cons. User cannot say directly which one is best. Both the operating systems are best at their levels of working and in functionalities. Linux is better for utility applications and networking. Windows is better for Desktop applications and for using tools.
