This release delivers improved usability features, enhanced support for bar code and Unicode output, and new support for IPv6 and Portable Network Graphics (PNG) images. In addition, enhancements are also made to the Download for z/os and the AFP Download Plus features of PSF. PSF for z/os is your solution for mission-critical, host-based printing. It is based on industry-standard AFP architecture 1 and supports IPDS TM workgroup, cut sheet, and continuous form printers in monochrome and color - including full process, managed color support for new application and printing trends. It has extensive system and application diagnostics and statistics, and leverages the qualities of service, reporting, and auditability of your z/os system. It also supports globalization of output with Unicode and XML data formats. Your System z output is already AFP-based: batch (JCL, such as, Line data, AFPDS, XML), transaction subsystem (such as, CICS, IMS TM ), applications (such as, z/os UNIX System Services or Linux on IBM System z). Combining PSF with the IBM Infoprint Server for z/os (an optional, priced feature of z/os,(5694- A01)) and the IBM Infoprint Transforms to AFP for z/os (5655-N60) products can transform PCL, PostScript, and PDF print formats, which are normally found on distributed print systems, to host-based AFP format. PSF V4.4 for z/os incorporates a number of AFP Architecture changes approved by the AFP Consortium. This print architecture provides consistent and device-independent color rendering across multiple color technologies and printer vendors. The AFP Color Consortium TM became an industry standards body in 2006, and was incorporated in 2009 as the AFP Consortium. The AFP Consortium strives to enhance the entire AFP architecture. Planned availability date September 30, 2011 Description Print Services Facility (PSF) for z/os offers exceptional versatility to help you manage your production print and output environment. PSF enables: automated print processes, system management of print files, attributes, and resources, as well as page-level error recovery, accounting, extensive diagnostics, and print process statistics. PSF sophistication, resilience, and diagnostics are unmatched by other print management systems. PSF V4.4 provides the following capabilities: Consolidation of print messages with the use of the Infoprint message log. Messages for both PSF and AFP Download Plus are written to the common message log as well as being directed to the existing destinations, which includes message files, consoles, and receivers. This is intended to allow you to look in one place for all the messages for network-attached printers whether managed by PSF or Infoprint Server. 3 Note: z/os 1.13 JES2 and JES3 is required for the support PSF, along with its Download for z/os and AFP Download Plus features, is updated to support native IPv6 addresses and mixed-mode addresses in addition to native IPv4 addresses. This can allow you to use printers that are attached to an IPv6 network, in addition to those attached to an IPv4 network. Enhanced bar code support including: Royal Mail Group Ltd.'s RED TAG bar code which is intended to be used with their new RED TAG intelligent mail offering The United States Postal Service's Intelligent Mail Container Bar code GS1 DataBar (previously known as Reduced Space Symbology) bar codes, which is a new bar code family designed to partially replace UPC and EAN bar codes. This provides small bar code symbols for those who require a symbol smaller than produced by their BCOCA TM implementation Data Matrix bar codes which adds a new Data Matrix special-function parameter to allow control over the encoding scheme used to produce the symbol Portable Nework Graphics (PNG) images. PNG is a graphics format that is designed to allow it to work well with Internet applications including support for lossless compression, indexed colors, process colors, grayscale, and an optional alpha channel. Enhanced Unicode support including support for: Pages containing user-defined characters with TrueType and OpenType fonts in PSF and AFP Download Plus. Text fidelity control, which specifies the actions to be taken by PSF/printer when a text exception is detected in a Unicode datastream. PTOCA Glyph run support, which provides a mechanism to render Unicode complex text on high-speed printers. Support for defining greater than 255 copies to be printed within the Group Information field. Note: z/os 1.13 is required for the support. Support for Presentation Text Object Content Architecture (PTOCA) objects with Object Environment Group (OEG), which treats PTOCA objects like any other AFP OCA object. Support for multi-page PDF containers and multi-image TIFF containers, which allows transfer of multiple page PDF files or multiple image TIFF files from the application to the server and to the printer controller as one single AFP container. Support for a different action code on existing intervention- required exceptions that allows the communication with the device to be maintained and thus the job to resume printing when the intervention is fixed. Support for ICC device link color management resources (DL CMRs) to customize the conversion between input and output color spaces. Support for specifying how long AFP Download Plus should wait for a response from another system and what action to take if one is not received, using a new keyword. This support was previously added to Download for z/os. 4 Product positioning PSF is the strategic mainframe production print solution of IBM. PSF supports the print management of z/os AFP output on host-attached printers. PSF is sophisticated, enabling automated print processes with system-management of print files and attributes, resources, page-level error recovery, accounting, extensive diagnosticss, and print process statistics. PSF supports AFP Consortium approved AFP architecture changes. The AFP Consortium is an open industry standards body. The scope of this consortium is the complete Advanced Function Presentation TM (AFP) architecture, which comprises the following data object architectures: Mixed Object Document Content, Intelligent Printer Data Stream TM, AFP Line Data, Bar Code Object Content, Color Management Object Content, Font Object Content, Graphics Object Content for AFP, Image Object Content, and Presentation Text Object Content. Hardware and software support services SmoothStart/installation services IBM Installation Services can be provided for PSF at an additional cost. PSF supports printers that adhere to the IPDS specifications. Not all functions of PSF are supported by all IPDS printers. Software requirements PSF runs on z/os V1.11, or later, with supported levels of JES2 or JES3. 5 SMP/E V3.4 (5655-G44), or later The following functions of the z/os Communications Server are required, depending upon the printer attachment: SNA Services for SNA-attached printers IP Services for TCP/IP-attached printers One of the following is required to provide host fonts: Infoprint Fonts for z/os V1.1 (5648-E76), or later AFP Font Collection for z/os V2.1.1 (5648-B33), or later The Compatibility Fonts optional feature of PSF, which does not contain euro support Worldtype Fonts for AFP Print Servers optional feature of Infoprint Fonts for Multiplatforms (5648-E77), which contains a wide selection of TrueType and OpenType fonts To use TrueType and OpenType fonts, you must have these: A resource installer program, such as the Font Installer optional feature of Infoprint Fonts for Multiplatforms, or the InfoPrint AFP Resource Installer (5639-EE2). A product that supplies TrueType and OpenType fonts, such as the WorldType Fonts for AFP Print Servers optional feature of Infoprint Fonts for Multiplatforms. PSF can successfully process resource access tables (RATs) created with either the IBM Font Installer or the InfoPrint AFP Resource Installer. However, a RAT created with the IBM Font Installer is not compatible with a RAT created with the InfoPrint AFP Resource Installer. Though the AFP Resource Installer can process a RAT created with the Font Installer and migrate it into the new format, the opposite is not true. When the Font Installer processes a RAT created with the AFP Resource Installer, it might lose the RAT information or an error might occur. Therefore, IBM recommends that you do not use the Font Installer once you have created a RAT with the AFP Resource Installer. Compatibility PSF V4.4 replaces PSF V4.3. Performance considerations The performance of PSF and its attached printers is dependent upon availability and efficiency of memory, storage, DASD, and channel and network resources in the system configuration. It is also highly dependent upon the content of the print data streams being processed. In general, data-intensive applications, such as those containing images, require more resources than applications containing plain text. If performance degradation is experienced, normal system performance analysis and tuning should be conducted before contacting IBM Service. Planning information Customer responsibilities PSF interacts with JES printer definitions, and for communication with attached printers, with VTAM, TCP/IP or both device definitions. Printers' device definitions should be in place for JES, VTAM, and TCP/IP prior to installing PSF. Packaging The PSF V4.4 base program and optional features are each shipped on separate tapes. No fonts are included on the PSF base tape. If the compatibility fonts are required, be sure to order the compatibility font optional, no-charge feature. A program directory is shipped with each PSF feature that is ordered. All publications are included on a CD-ROM in Bookmanager and PDF formats. This CD-ROM is shipped with the base program. Terms and conditions for use of the machine-readable files are shipped with the files. Security, auditability, and control PSF uses the security features and programs of the z/os operating systems. The customer is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communication facilities. 7 Order VM SDO and VSE SIPO through the Internet ShopzSeries provides an easy way to plan and order System z software upgrades. This now includes VM and VSE. Using ShopzSeries, you can quickly generate orders for VM SDOs and VSE SIPOs. Additionally, ShopzSeries will ensure your order is technically correct (that is, ensures any co-req or pre-req or incompatibility conditions are resolved to ensure timely order placement and processing). ShopzSeries is available in the United States and several countries in Europe. Ordering instructions are scheduled to be mailed from IBM Software Delivery and Fulfillment to all current licensees by (month day, year). You cannot continue to order V4.3. New licensees Orders for new licenses can be placed now. Registered customers can access IBMLink TM for ordering information and charges. Shipment will not occur before the availability date. Unless a later date is specified, orders entered before the planned availability date will be assigned a schedule date of one week following availability. The PSF Tier is determined based on the number of printers PSF will be driving, and the impressions-per-minute rated speed of those printers. Printer points are assigned to each printer based on its rated speed. Points for all printers except those in Category 1 are accumulated, and the total number of points indicates the appropriate PSF price tier. 9 Customized offerings Product deliverables are shipped only via CBPDO, ServerPac, SystemPac. CBPDO and ServerPac are offered for Internet delivery in countries where ShopzSeries product ordering is available. Internet delivery reduces software delivery time and allows you to install software without the need to handle tapes.
