IPv6/VSE provides an IPv6 TCP/IP stack, IPv6 application programming interfaces (APIs), and IPv6- enabled applications. IPv6/VSE V1 will add IPv6 to z/vse to allow z/vse users to participate in an IPv6 network bring the benefits of IPv6 functionality to z/vse users help z/vse users to meet the requirements of the commercial community and governmental agencies and thus fulfills the statement of direction in Software Announcement AP , dated October 20, The IPv6 stack of IPv6/VSE and the IPv4 stack of TCP/IP for VSE/ESA TM can be run concurrently within one z/vse system. Therefore, existing IPv4 applications continue to run unchanged using the IPv4 stack, thus protecting and leveraging existing client investments while new IPv6-enabled applications can gradually be introduced using the IPv6 stack. IPv6/VSE V1's dual stack support allows IPv6-anabled applications to access the IPv4 and IPv6 networks simultaneously in either a batch or CICS environment. Overview TCP/IP-based network connectivity is a critical component in today's business environment. The limitations of the Internet Protocol Version 4 (IPv4) together with increasing regulatory requirements have driven the need for an Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6) TCP/IP solution for z/vse. IPv6 represents the next evolution of Internet Protocol beyond the IPv4 standard currently in use in most of today's networks. It has become apparent that IPv4 addresses are limited and are becoming exhausted with the rapidly expanding Internet use. Therefore, the key IPv6 enhancement is the expansion of the IP address space from 32-bit addresses (used in IPv4) to 128-bit addresses. As a result, there will be a virtually unlimited number of IP addresses available for the foreseeable future. IBM is a registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation 1
2 This addressing capability, together with simplified address configuration and management, makes IPv6 a critical component in the evolution of e-business and the next-generation Internet. The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD), the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA), and the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) mandate an IPv6 timeline that requires IPv6-compliant products to be included in all new information technology (IT) acquisitions that use the Internet Protocol. The IPv6/VSE V1 product is designed to provide an IPv6 solution for z/vse to: Allow z/vse users to participate in an IPv6 network Bring the benefits of IPv6 functionality to z/vse users Help z/vse users to meet the requirements of the commercial community and governmental agencies IPv6/VSE V1 is designed to provide an IPv6 TCP/IP stack, IPv6 application programming interfaces (APIs), and IPv6-enabled applications. IPv6/VSE V1 supports the IPv6 protocol only, while TCP/IP for VSE/ESA V1.5 supports the IPv4 protocol only. Both TCP/IP stacks can be run concurrently within one z/vse system. Existing IPv4 applications continue to run unchanged, thus protecting and leveraging existing customer investments while new IPv6- enabled applications can be gradually introduced using the IPv6 stack. In addition, IPv6/VSE's dual stack support allows IPv6-enabled applications to transparently communicate with partners via either the IPv6 or IPv4 network. z/vse V4R2 offers Midrange Workload License Charge (MWLC) pricing metrics, including a sub-capacity option, for IBM System z10 EC, z10 TM BC, z9 TM EC, and z9 BC servers. The sub-capacity option is also available for the IPv6/VSE V1 product. The smallest z10 BC and z9 BC server capacity setting, A01, does not qualify for MWLC. Clients on the z10 BC and z9 BC capacity setting A01 will always pay zseries Entry License Charge (zelc) for their IBM monthly license charge software. Key prerequisites Refer to the Hardware requirements section, Software requirements section, and Planning information section for details. Planned availability date May 28, 2010 Description The IPv6/VSE V1 (IPv6/VSE) product is designed to deliver an IPv6 solution, thus bringing the benefits of IPv6 functionality to z/vse users. IPv6/VSE provides an IPv6 TCP/IP stack, IPv6 application programming interfaces (APIs), and IPv6-enabled applications. IPv6 is an evolution of IPv4 and is designed to improve upon the IPv4 protocol. The key IPv6 enhancement is the use of 128-bit addresses, which results in a virtually unlimited number of IP addresses being available for the foreseeable future. This may eliminate the need for private address spaces and therefore one of the needs for network address translation (NAT), which was developed to reduce the demand for globally unique IP addresses. Functionality provided by the IPv6/VSE product: IBM is a registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation 2
3 IPv6/VSE provides an IPv6 TCP/IP stack The IPv6 stack of IPv6/VSE is designed to run in a separate partition using its own stack ID. This allows both an IPv4 and IPv6 stack to run concurrently within one z/vse system. Running separate IPv4 and IPv6 stacks concurrently within one z/vse system addresses both performance and reliability aspects. Existing IPv4 applications continue to run unchanged using the IPv4 TCP/IP stack, thus protecting and leveraging existing client investments. New IPv6-enabled applications can gradually be introduced using the IPv6 stack of IPv6/VSE. IPv6/VSE provides dual stack support Dual stack support allows IPv6/VSE to connect to both an IPv4 and IPv6 network simultaneously. With the implementation of dual stack support, a single IPv6- enabled CICS transaction or batch application can communicate with partners via either the IPv4 or IPv6 network. Enhanced socket APIs are provided that may be used to introduce IPv6-enabled applications. IPv6/VSE provides IPv6 tunneling support IPv6 tunneling is an Internet protocol that encapsulates IPv6 datagrams within IPv4 packets. It allows communication with external IPv6 networks even if the local infrastructure supports IPv4 only. IPv6/VSE IPv6-enabled utility applications Utility applications like FTP, TN3270E, and so forth provided with the IPv6/VSE product run outside the IPv6/VSE stack partition. Running applications external to the IPv6/VSE stack partition may provide greater stability and better performance. FTP server: The IPv6/VSE FTP server supports access to z/vse resources (POWER queues, VSAM catalogs, SAM file, z/vse libraries, and so on) by remote host FTP clients. Batch FTP client: The IPv6/VSE batch FTP client runs as a z/vse batch job providing access to remote host FTP servers. Data can be sent to or received from these remote FTP servers. TN3270E server: The IPv6/VSE TN3270E server supports TN3270/TN3270E terminal sessions and TN3270E printer sessions. In addition, DIRECT, LPR, and FTP printer sessions are supported. NTP server: The IPv6/VSE NTP server is a Network Time Protocol server that allows remote hosts to query the time of day (TOD) clock of z/vse to synchronize their clocks with the z/vse clock. NTP client: The IPv6/VSE NTP client allows z/vse to set its TOD clock to an external source. System Logger client: This application is used to log selected z/vse console messages to a remote Linux syslog-ng daemon. Once a message is sent to the syslog-ng daemon, Linux automation processing can be used to trigger events. Batch client: The IPv6/VSE Batch client is used to send an to an SMTP server. In turn, the SMTP server will send the to a destination user. Any number of recipients are permitted and files can be attached to an outgoing message. Batch LPR: The IPv6/VSE Batch LPR application extracts data from the POWER queues and transfers it to a remote host LPD. The LPD can be in a printer or running as a server on a remote host. Batch Remote Execution client: The IPv6/VSE Remote EXEC client allows a job running in a z/vse partition to trigger a script to run on a remote host. Any output from the script is returned to the client and scanned for completion information. IBM is a registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation 3
4 Batch PING: The IPv6/VSE Batch PING application is used to ping a remote host. GZIP data compression: IPv6/VSE provides a simple gzip data compression application. Data can be read, compressed, and written to a SAM file or library member. The compressed data can then be transferred to a remote host for processing. The reverse of this process can also be performed. REXX TM automation: IPv6/VSE uses z/vse REXX EXECs for automation. Automatic FTP of data is handled using a provided sample REXX EXEC. Automatic LPR or automatic of data is handled in the same way. Invoking IPv6/VSE applications from within a REXX EXEC allows dynamic creation of commands and parameters (for example filenames and dates). The IPv6/VSE utility applications FTP server, FTP client, LPR, Batch client, and GZIP support Double Byte Character Set (DBCS). Product positioning The requirement to integrate z/vse systems into the larger IT network is a key part of the z/vse strategy. The z/vse strategy is designed to help you introduce competitive new IT solutions at low cost, low risk, and fast time-to-market. The key to achieving these objectives is helping you leverage your existing investments in core z/vse applications and data. The added support of the IPv6 TCP/IP stack, IPv6 application programming interfaces (APIs), and IPv6-enabled applications extends the interoperability choice for z/vse. In addition to the IPv4 protocol, z/vse users can now exploit the next evolution of Internet Protocol and its expanded capabilities. The IPv6 and IPv4 TCP/IP stacks can run concurrently within one z/vse system. Existing IPv4 applications continue to run unchanged, thus protecting and leveraging existing client investments while new IPv6-enabled applications can be gradually introduced using the IPv6 stack.
