1 Software Announcement May 6, 2003 Preview: IBM pseries Cluster 1600 Expands Cluster Building Blocks and Software Support Overview New offerings for the pseries Cluster 1600 include additional hardware models as well as support for Parallel System Support Programs (PSSP) V3.5 on AIX 5L for POWER V5.2. Your Cluster 1600 applications can now take advantage of the functions offered by AIX 5L V5.2. PSSP V3.5 running AIX V5.2 supports systems that have an SP Switch or SP Switch2, or systems that have no switches. Enhancements to Cluster Systems Management (CSM) for AIX, V1.3.1 enable new xseries servers running the Linux operating system to be included in a Cluster 1600 as managed server nodes. CSM does not support systems with an SP Switch or SP Switch2. For a complete list of PSSP and CSM programs and their planned availability dates, refer to the Description section. Refer to the Technical Description section for an updated scaling table. Previews provide insight into IBM plans and direction. More choices for expanding your clusters: Clusters using AIX can include new POWER4+ servers. As added investment protection, existing SP customers can move SP nodes or attached servers to clusters managed by CSM. Clusters using Linux can include new xseries servers and blades. Clusters formed with new servers can span both AIX on pseries and Linux on xseries controlled by a single management server running AIX. Cluster 1600 with PSSP includes new pseries servers. Customers with PSSP-managed clusters can include servers running AIX V5.2, allowing your applications to take advantage of the functions offered by AIX V5.2. 2 Description Updated Cluster Enhancements pseries 670 and 690 servers Support on these servers with RIO-2 is planned to be available with PSSP V3.4 and PSSP V3.5 on May 23, I/O performance is enhanced with the PCI-X and RIO-2 technologies. New, faster processors based on IBM POWER4+ technology offer larger memory and I/O enhancements for the pseries 670 and 690 servers. PSSP V3.4, PSSP V3.5, and CSM V1.3.1 are supported on these servers providing increased server performance and capacity on July 25, These servers are supported with PSSP V3.4 and V3.5 running AIX V5.1 and PSSP V3.5 running AIX V5.2 with the SP Switch2 in both single and two-plane environments on May 23, The servers are also supported with CSM V1.3.1 running AIX V5.2. PSSP V3.4, PSSP V3.5, and CSM V1.3.1 plan to support the pseries 655 POWER4+ server with the RIO-2 on July 25, pseries 650 Cluster support The pseries 650 server is initially supported as a cluster building block with the Cluster 1600 and PSSP V3.5 on AIX 5.2 providing LPAR support in a clustered environment. With PSSP this server can optionally be attached to the SP Switch2. This support is available on May 23, The pseries 650 model 6M2 is planned to be supported with PSSP V3.4 and V3.5 on AIX V5.1, and CSM V1.3.1 on July 25, pseries 630 Server LPAR support in a clustered environment is available on the pseries 630 server running either CSM V1.3.1, PSSP V3.4, or PSSP V3.5. Dual Hardware Management Console (HMC) support CSM for AIX V1.3.1 provides dual HMC support including power on/off LPAR control, booting, starting, and stopping the system or individual s, and displays the list of s and the power status. CSM hardware control features CSM for AIX V1.3.1 further enhances hardware control support to include: 9076 SP nodes (feature numbers 2050, 2051, 2052, 2053, 2054, 2056, 2057, and 2058) 7026 servers (models H80, M80, 6H0/6H1, 6M1, and pseries60) pseries 690, 670, 655, 650, and 630 servers Support on the SP node, features 2054 and 2058, is planned to be available on September 26, 2003, with APAR #IY Note: CSM does not support the SP Switch or SP Switch2. CSM interoperability CSM for AIX 5L V1.3 supports interoperability with the AIX management server and managed xseries server nodes running: Red Hat Linux 7.2, 7.3, or 8.0 Red Hat Advanced Server 2.1 SuSE Linux 8.0 or 8.1 SuSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) 7 or 8 AIX 5L V5.2 is required for the cluster management server. The maximum number of operating system images (AIX plus Linux) that can be managed under CSM for AIX 5L is 128. 7 IBM Electronic Services IBM has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to put you on the road to higher systems availability. Electronic Services is a Web-enabled solution that provides an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support on the IBM eserver. You should benefit from greater system availability due to faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. Electronic Services comprises two separate but complementary elements: IBM Electronic Services news page and IBM Electronic Service Agent. The Electronic Services news page provides is a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services and support. Using the news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems. The Electronic Service Agent is a no-additional-charge software that resides on your system to proactively monitor events and transmit system inventory information to IBM on a periodic customer-defined timetable. The Electronic Service Agent tracks system inventory, hardware error logs, and performance information. If the server is under a current IBM maintenance service agreement or within the IBM warranty period, the Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to provide proactive service that maintains higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent will be made available to IBM service support representatives when they help answer your questions or diagnosing problems.
