Publish Material In the course room, there is a menu at the left. This will look familiar if you have experience working with Fronter. 1
You can publish material in Course information and in Course materials. They work in the same way but are used in different ways. You can find both in the left-hand menu. Course information is used mostly to publish literature lists, course syllabi and other similar general documents. Course material is the central place for the publishing of documents, PowerPoints, links and other material that you think students will need. 2
Course information The Course information page is automatically filled with one item, a link to the course syllabus. This is a good place to publish other material that is important for your students. For example, you might want to write a welcome text to your students. Click on Build Content to do so. You can read more about the different types of content you can build. For this example, we ll create an item. 3
1. Here you can change the title of the document, including the colour of the title. The default colour is black; this you do not need to change. 2. A simple editor to change font, size, etc. in your text: if you want a larger menu, click on the arrows at the far right. 3. You write in the white area in the editor. 4. You can also attach files to your message using the Attach Files section just below the editor. 4
Course materials Unlike Course information, Course materials is initially empty. It says It s time to add content ; therefore, click on Build Content. 5
When there is material, it looks something like this: What can you publish? File Item Web Link Choose your files. Students and other teachers can download them. Texts, links and pictures can be published via an editor. You can also attach more than one file at the same time. All texts, links, etc. are visible directly on the page, which means that the student s screen is quickly full. Links that go outside Learn for example, recorded lectures. You can also attach files and write in an editor (as with Item ). The heading itself is the link. 6
Course Link A link to somewhere you choose in the course room to a forum, to a place in Course Materials, etc. If the student has access to it, then you can make a link to it. Picture A picture with text of your choice beneath it. Empty Page Similar to Item however, the difference is that you must click on the name to come to the text, document, etc. that can be found on the page. Films from YouTube can be shown directly in Learn. Other settings Further explanation At the top right, there is a question mark (?). Click on this to get explanations on a range of subjects. Click on it again to conclude. Editor Many ways to publish material involve this editor. Generally, the recommendation is that you use, for example, Microsoft Word to write your documents and to then upload them (for example with File ); however, you can also write directly in Learn. To the top on the right-hand side, you can see the symbol i. Click on this to get a comprehensive list of settings. 10
Further options Permit Users to View this Content Track Number of Views Select Date and Time Restrictions Cancel Preview Submit If you choose No, then this file/item/link will not be visible for the students in the course room. If you choose Yes, you will then be able to see which students have seen (or clicked on ) the file/item/link. If you want the file/item/link to be visible after a certain date only or before a certain only. You can set this so that it is always visible after a Display after date. If you do not want to upload a file. Preview how it will look. (This is not available for all types of Course material.) When you are ready and want to upload the file. 10
File Name The name of the file that the students see. It does not need to be the same name as the name you used when uploading the file. Colour of Name If it is to be in another colour than black. This can be good to draw students attention to something but use this function sparingly. Find File Choose Browse My Computer if you want to upload a file. The alternative is Browse Course if the file already exists in the course room. Selected File Which file has been chosen. Select a Different File If you want to change to another file. 11
Open in a new window For when the file is to be opened in a new window (or in a new tab) in your web browser. 12
Item Name The name of the object as the students see it. Colour of Name If it is to be in another colour than black. Good to draw students attention to something. Use sparingly. Text A place to write texts, etc. If you write a web address (for example, it is considered to be a link and will be clickable for students. If you want more (or fewer) ways to edit your text, you can click on the arrows to the right. 13
Unlike with File, you can add as many files as you want. For example, you can collect all of your PowerPoint files in the course here. 14
Web Link Name URL The text that will be clickable so that students are then able to see (for example) your lecture. Address to link. Disregard This link is to a Tool Provider since we do not use this. Text The same type of editor as with Item. 15
Files can be attached in the same way as with Item. Course Link Choose Item The place to where students can be linked. A new box appears in a new window (or new tab) in the web browser when you click on it. See pictures down at the right. Click on the place where the students are to link to. 16
Item Name Name Location Description To where the link goes. This you cannot change here. The name that students see and the text they click on to reach the place you link to. By default, it is the same name as Item Name, but this you can change. The internal link. This you cannot change (even though it looks as though you can). The same sort of editor again. It is good to write a brief explanation about the purpose with the link. 17
Blank Page On Blank Page, you can do the same things as with Item. Note that Name and Colour of Name are not written out, but the option is available there. 18
YouTube Films You can either search using specific words/phrases (for example, University ) or you can write the direct link to the film. Click on Go to run a search. Search results are shown below. Click on Select beside the film you want to show. You have a couple of options to choose from before you submit your YouTube link. The alternatives are: Thumbnail Text Link with Player Embed Video Students can see a small video player when they click on the film. As above, but they see text only and not a small picture. Students can play the film directly on the page. Note that this option can take up a lot of space. 21
Here is how the different options look when submitted. 22
Organise Course material and what students see Change the order of the contents. The standard is that the content is displayed in the order in which it was entered. You can change this. Content Folder Move Copy Delete For material: many teachers/courses divide the material after each week or module. Move content to another course room or within a course room for example, to a specific folder. Copy content to another course room. Delete content. Change the order of content To the right in Course material, there are two arrows. Click on these to bring up a menu (see picture below). There, highlight an object and use the arrows to move it up or down in the order. Click on Submit when you are finished or Cancel to go back. 23
Content folder Content can be put in a folder. Name Colour of name Text The name of the folder as students see it. If it is to be in another colour than black. Good to draw students attention to something. Use sparingly. A place to write texts, etc. If you write a web address (for example, it is considered to be a link and will be clickable for students. If you want more (or fewer) ways to edit your text, you can click on the arrows to the right. Default Content View Icon and Text are pre-chosen. Icon Only : choose this as the folder content is shown as icons and not by name. Note that this could make it hard for students to find what they are looking for. Text only removes the icons but not the names. 24
Move, Copy and Delete Hold the mouse over the content you want to move and click on the down arrow: a menu will appear. Choose Move, Copy or Delete. Move Destination Course Destination Folder Choose the course room you want to move content to. By default, the current room is selected here. If you want to move content within the course room you are working in, leave the default setting as it is. The folder you want to move content to. Click on Browse (it may say something similar) and a page will open (or a tab) where you can choose the folder. Click on the folder you want to move content to. 25
Cancel Submit Move nothing Move to the chosen course/folder Copy The same principle as with Move but with a few differences. 1. The content remains: it does not move; instead, a copy is created. 2. You will get the choice regarding Files. a. Copy links to the attached or embedded files. b. Include links and make copies of the attached or embedded files. Delete If you choose Delete, content is deleted (for example, the web link and the file). 26
Possible problems If you find yourself unable to change files, etc., then check that Edit Mode is ON. If Edit Mode is OFF, click on OFF to enable editing. 27
