3 1 interface 1.1 Installation of the Tableau reader Prior to using the interface, it is necessary to download the Tableau reader. Tableau reader installation instructions Step 1: Following the link and follow the instructions (see Figure 1.1). Step 2: Save a copy of ClubsSTATS to the computer. Step 3: Open by double clicking the file in its saved location. 4 1.3 Dashboards features and controls Key dashboard features Each dashboard within comprises a predetermined combination of: maps; charts; tables; map filters; list filters; ranges (legend); counts; and tabs for selecting a Dashboard to view. These features are illustrated in the following screenshot. 5 1.3.2 Map window controls There are a number of basic controls associated with map windows in Tableau, as outlined below. Controlling the map window instructions Step 1: Hovering the mouse over any map window will automatically generate an icon bar in the top left-hand corner of the map (see Figure 1.3). Step 2: The + icon can be used to zoom in on the current view. Step 3: The - icon can be used to zoom out of the current view. Step 4a: The square icon can be used to zoom on a selected area of the map. Step 4b: Once the square icon is clicked, a magnifying glass icon will appear that can be used to drag over a desired section of the map for zooming. Step 5a: The pin icon is used to indicate whether the map window is zoomed to a custom view or not. If the pin is blue and facing down, a custom view is currently in use. 6 1.3.3 Exporting maps from Maps within are able to be exported by the user. Exporting maps instructions Step 1: Ensure that the desired map is selected by clicking anywhere in the map. The user is only able to export a map when a map window is selected. Step 2: Select the Worksheet menu item, then Export, then Image (see Figure 7.4). Step 3: Use the dialogue box to select the desired features of the map, for example its title and colour scheme. Step 4: Click Save which will prompt you to select the location where you want it saved. The map will then be saved as a jpg image. Figure 1.4: Screenshot of the map export menu Exporting data from The data underpinning maps and charts can also be exported to Microsoft Excel from. Exporting data instructions Step 1: Ensure that the desired map or chart is selected. Step 2: Under the Worksheet menu item, select Export and then Crosstab to Excel. Page 6 of 12

7 1.3.5 Frequently asked questions How do I revert to the original dataset? (i.e. remove all filters) If at any point you get stuck, are unsure as to the filters that are activated, or have made a mistake in your investigation, press F12 and click Revert to revert the dataset back to its original form. This will re-open the original version of the Dataset allowing you to start your investigation from scratch. Why can t I see the labels? If you cannot see the labels associated with any tables or graphs, or Tableau displays only part of the name, followed by..., hover the mouse over the name and a dialogue box will display the full label. Where can I see further information about a map or a data point? Hover the mouse over any selected region, LGA, club, chart, or map to see a dialogue box that will provide further information on that particular item Interlinking of dashboards The dashboards within are interlinked (however the Demographic and Economic dashboards are not interlinked due to different geographic definitions). When a region filter is applied on a given dashboard, it will flow through to the Clubs Location map and LGA list selector on all dashboards, however, will not filter the demographic variables between dashboards. Please deselect and/or turn off all filters before moving between dashboards. For example: If you select the Metropolitan region on Dashboard 1 the entire Dashboard will update to provide you information on Sydney. If you move across to Dashboard 2, you will notice that the Clubs Map has updated along with the LGA list selector. The map and pie chart will only update when you select the Metropolitan region on this dashboard as well. This applies to Dashboard 3, 4 and 5 as well. The Economic dashboards however are separate to the Demographic dashboards; although function in the same manner. Deselecting filters instructions Step 1: The user can deselect filters or, alternatively, press F12 at any time to revert to its original state. Page 7 of 12

8 1.4 Dashboard functionality Worked example of dashboard functionality Each dashboard allows the user to undertake a range of analysis related to various demographic and economic variables. Each dashboard includes a Region map, which can be used as a filter to zoom into one of the three regions (i.e. Metro, Regional and Remote). There are a number of maps, charts and tables which represent data in different ways and each Demographic Dashboard includes a count of persons or dwellings which updates automatically based on your selection. Furthermore, any LGA or variable can be selected to filter the dataset at a more granular level. Most Dashboards also provide the option for the user to filter by Year or Change between years. Undertaking population analysis instructions Step 1: The user will notice that the Location of Clubs map shows the location of clubs across New South Wales. Click on the Metro region on the Region map to zoom in on all LGAs classified as metropolitan (see Page 8 of 12

9 Figure 1.5Once the Location of Clubs map has zoomed into metropolitan regions, the user will notice that the chart of population growth by five year age cohort will have also updated to represent metropolitan regions. The second bar chart represents the comparison for all New South Wales, and will remain fixed, regardless of the region selected. Step 2: The user is subsequently able to undertake analysis of specific population trends within a particular LGA. There are two ways to filter down to the LGA level within the dashboard (see figure 7.5 and 7.7). Use the Location of Clubs map window to select a particular club or LGA. Selecting a specific club or LGA will result in the Location of clubs map and the first population growth bar chart to update to reflect the corresponding LGA. Use the LGA list in the bottom right hand corner of the dashboard to select an LGA. Once an LGA is selected, the Location of clubs map and the first population growth bar chart will update to reflect the statistics for the corresponding LGA. Multiple LGAs can be selected by holding down the Control key. Page 9 of 12

11 Figure 1.7: Screenshot of selecting an LGA with the LGA list (Step 2) Notes on functionality within other dashboards While most dashboards in have similar functionality to the worked example above, there are a number of key differences, as outlined below. Other dashboard functionality instructions Dashboard 2: The thematic map is best utilised at the NSW or broadly defined region (i.e. Metro, Regional, Remote ) level. The dashboard shows the absolute population change between 2011 and 2021 for total population, however, the user can specifically choose one or more 5-year age cohorts for the analysis from the list on the right hand side of the dashboard. Dashboard 3: The thematic map can be filtered by selecting either one of the Country of birth options on the right hand side (Anglo, Asian, Italian/Greek and Other). Dashboard 4: The thematic map can be filtered by selecting the household composition (couple family with children, couple family no children, one parent family, other family, lone person or group) and the year of data (2006, 2011 or percentage point change ). Dashboard 5: The thematic map can be filtered by selecting the household composition (couple family with children, couple family no children, one parent family, other family, lone person or group) and equivalised income category (low, medium or high).
