3 Smart Grid Interoperability Interoperability is the ability of two or more networks, systems, applications, components, or devices from the same vendor, or different vendors, to exchange and subsequently use that information in order to perform the required functions (according IEEE 610). Being formulated in a general way, this concept is valid for the entire Smart Grid. Page CEN-CENELEC-ETSI 2014

4 Considerations Due to the scale of the system and its economic importance, failures in operation and especially architectural and functional planning of the system, potentially induce high costs. In order to enable a well-structured migration process, the requirements for the Smart Grid and the current system have to be decomposed using an appropriate model. Page CEN-CENELEC-ETSI 2014

8 Methodology Testing is an important phase of the system development life cycle. The V-Model represents a development process which was first proposed in the late 1980s and is still in use today. It is applicable to hardware and software development. It demonstrates the relationships between each phase of the development life cycle and its associated phase of testing. 13 Profiling Definition An IOP profile can be seen as a document that describes how standards and additional specifications are deployed to support the requirements of a particular application, function, community, or context. Page CEN-CENELEC-ETSI 2014

14 Profiles Objective of profiles: Reduce complexity Clarify vague or ambiguous specifications Improve interoperability Basic Application Profiles (BAP) Based on domain specific basic application functions descriptions Agreed-upon selection and interpretation of relevant parts of the applicable standard Intended to be used as building blocks for interoperable user/project specifications BAPs may include Description of the related Application function (SGAM function layer) Interaction diagrams Relevant data models (SGAM Information Layer) Communication services (SGAM Communication Layer) Page CEN-CENELEC-ETSI 2014

15 Scope of basic application profiles Basic application profiles (BAPs) are valid for specific application domains e.g. Substation automation, DER management, hydro power, E-mobility BAPs are intended to represent an: user agreed common denominator of a recommended implementation or an user selected best practice implementation of an application function in a specific smart Grid domain BAPs are not intended to cover all possible implementation options BAPs must not have options, all selected criteria are mandatory to achieve the chosen level of interoperability -> if variants of BAPs for an application function are needed -> different BAPs for the same application function have to be defined Page CEN-CENELEC-ETSI 2014

17 Interoperability testing Interoperability testing may be viewed as a supplement to conformance testing, by verifying that diverse implementations do indeed work together effectively, to deliver the expected results.
