6 is about to change Large power plants will become even larger and move away from load centers requiring more cross border transmission (E+G) for which pan-european thinking is needed In parallel large numbers of small scale power generators, mainly based on renewable energy sources, will be installed Integration of varying both centralized and distributed generation will require changes in both grid and system operations
7 and will result in more uncertainty, everywhere Electrification of energy demand will result in greater dependence on power quality and security of supply More fluctuation in supply and in demand certainly will result in less predictable power flows, and e.g. request for energy storage Consumers become producers what will affect power flow as well as energy market, and a need to develop new market mechanisms 7

10 The role of Smart Metering Position Paper on Smart Grids, An ERGEG Public Consultation paper, E09-EQS Smart metering systems allow interval metering for both active and reactive components of electricity consumed and injected into the network, so contributing to more accurate balancing, losses and power factor calculation, to promoting peak and off-peak prices and to discouraging bad practices in the use of the network. Smart metering technologies may further provide information on quality of electricity supply at each connection point, thus contributing to more effective investments and renovation plans of the grids, thereby increasing security of supply. The most important benefit is that, due to the accurate information and two-way communication that smart meters can provide on actual time of use, customers could be encouraged to modify their load profile. In summary, smart metering enhances and enables a number of smart grid functions. 10

12 Before delivering Review GOAL of M/441 The general objective of the M/441 mandate is to create European standards that will enable interoperability of utility meters (water, gas, electricity, heat) which can then improve the means by which customers awareness of actual consumption can be raised in order to allow timely adaptation to their demands Lucia Palmegiani, Policy Officer, DG ENTERPRISE Create standards Achieve Interoperability Utility Metering Improve customer awareness Timely demand adaption 12
