ChemDraw, ACS, SciFinder Instructions CM 226 ChemDraw ChemDraw is a valuable tool that allows students and professionals to draw compounds, reactions, and mechanisms. The following worksheet is designed to prepare you to use this tool to draw compounds and mechanisms that will be required for your future lab reports. Use ChemDraw to draw the following reaction: 2 2, 3 All of the tools needed to do this are located on the toolbar in ChemDraw (usually on the left side of the screen). Some of the tools (such as the arrow) offer an extended menu to choose different options (such as a curved arrow or a straight arrow). After you have finished your mechanism, copy and paste it into the Organic Letters template and type in your name. Be sure to print it.
ChemDraw, ACS, SciFinder Instructions CM 226 ACS Publications ACS Publications allows students to review and print scientific articles that have been published by the American Chemical Society. The following worksheet will provide instructions to print an article that can be used as one of the required references for the lab report on brominating alkenes. ACS Publications can be accessed from any computer at UI. It can also be accessed from computers off campus by activating your student ID at the library and entering your name and library code when prompted. Multiple users are allowed at the same time, and numerous articles can be printed directly from the website. Use the following instructions to enter into ACS Publications. Type into browser: Click link (on the left) Click link (on the right) Click link (at the top) Find Articles Physical & Mathematical Sciences American Chemical Society Web Editions Once you have entered ACS Publications, there are a variety of ways to search for articles. These include selecting a specific journal, using the keyword search, and using the advanced search. Enter into Search Click button omination of Alkenes Search After you have searched for a topic, numerous articles and entries will display. While UI has access to many journals, it does not have a license for all of them. Due to this, you may occasionally locate an article that is not available online. If this is the case, check the library for more information, since UI often has paper copies of articles and also shares with other universities (interlibrary loan). There are several options to review articles. These are Full Text TML, i-es PDF, and PDF w/links. All of the options will not be available for all of the articles. The first article displayed from our search should be the desired article. Click i-es PDF eview the article. Note that Table 1 shows substrates and products related to alkene bromination. This article may be useful as a reference for your first lab report. Print All pages (2) and write your name on each page.
ChemDraw, ACS, SciFinder Instructions CM 226 SciFinder Similar to ACS Publications, SciFinder is a tool used to search for scientific references and articles. owever, UI has a license which allows only one user at a time to use SciFinder, so do not wait until the last minute to try to find articles using it. SciFinder has a feature that allows you to draw compounds and reactions and then search for them specifically. Today, your TA will demonstrate how to use SciFinder. You can also view tutorials at Type into browser: Click link (on the left) Click link (on the right) Click link (near the end) Find Articles Physical & Mathematical Sciences SciFinder Scholar (Chemical Abstracts) The link for SciFinder will only be useful if you have already created a log in and password. To do this, click on the link to the CAS registration site and create an account for free. Type Username and Password to log into SciFinder.
ChemDraw, ACS, SciFinder Instructions CM 226 Accept the terms to use the program. Type into esearch Topic omination of Alkenes and Click Search to find the topic.
ChemDraw, ACS, SciFinder Instructions CM 226 Choose the 131 references... option and Click Get eferences to see the references.
ChemDraw, ACS, SciFinder Instructions CM 226 Choose the second article. Click on the Full Text option. You may need to enable popups for the site. As with ACS Publications, the full text will not always be available. A PDF Version may also be available for viewing. This article would be useful as a second reference for your first lab report.
ChemDraw, ACS, SciFinder Instructions CM 226 SciFinder has ways to search for topics besides using keywords. Click Explore Substances and Click Click to Edit to find references by compound. Draw a compound using the available tools and click OK to enter the compound.
ChemDraw, ACS, SciFinder Instructions CM 226 Click Search to find references with the compound drawn. Choose based on what is needed. The last option is usually the simplest one.
ChemDraw, ACS, SciFinder Instructions CM 226 Click on Get eactions and change the options if needed. Choose Explore eactions and use the drawing tools to find references based on reactions.
ChemDraw, ACS, SciFinder Instructions CM 226 Citations An important component of this lab and your grade is writing lab reports. In order to do this, it is imperative that you understand how to cite references properly. While different fields use different citation formats, the field of chemistry uses the ACS (American Chemical Society) format. ere is an excellent website which shows how to do this: Essentially, there are two types of references, which will be used for this lab: primary and secondary. A primary reference would be an original piece of research. A secondary reference may be a review of many pieces of research or a textbook. Two common references are articles in scientific journals and sections of edited books. Edited Book: Last name, F. Article Title. In Book Name; Last name, F., Ed.; Publisher: Place, Year; Vol. #; p #. Scientific Article: Last name, F.; Other name, F. Title of Article. Journal Abbr. Year, volume, page-page. Note that Vol. is included for a book, but not for a scientific article. The volume number for a scientific article is written alone. Also, a p appears before the page numbers for a book, but does not for a scientific article. Like the volume, the pages are written alone. Computer Programs Two computer programs that will be used during the course of this semester are ChemDraw, which we discussed today, and MNova, which will be discussed later in the semester. It is highly recommended that you install these programs into your computer or laptop now. The links and instructions for downloading are on the CM226 website. Students frequently have issues with installation and waiting until the last minute to install them will only lead to stress and frustration. While there is access to computers with these programs within Pastore (Pastore 215 and Pastore Computer oom), these rooms are not always available. For example, they are closed on weekends and late at night when you may be writing a report. There are links and instructions on how to install these programs on the CM 226 website.
ChemDraw, ACS, SciFinder Worksheet CM 226 ChemDraw Print a copy of the bromination mechanism in the Organic Letters template with your name. 2 2, 3 ACS Publications Print the entire two (2) pages of the following article and write your name on each of the pages: yu, I.; Matsubara,.; Yasuda, S.; Nakamura,.; Curran, D. P. Phase-Vanishing eactions that Use Fluorous Media as a Phase Screen. Facile, Controlled omination of Alkenes by Dibromine and Dealkylation of Aromatic Ethers by Boron Tribromide. J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2002, 124, ighlight a section that discusses bromination. ACS Publications or SciFinder Locate and print an article that would be suitable for use as a reference for your first lab report (ominating Alkenes). ighlight the portion of the article that relates to the bromination of alkenes. Suitable articles could make reference to a synthesis that uses alkene bromination or mentions an application of alkene bromination. Write the reference for the article you chose.
